I took yesterday off from biking and the wind calmed down. I ride today and the wind kicked up again. This may be a coincidence but I doubt it. When I started my ride today the wind was 20 mph from the southeast with 23 mph gusts. To go with the wind the sky was cloudy with what might have been some rain clouds in the distance but no rain during the ride. The temperature held steady at 70 degrees but the stiff wind had a chill in it.
It was tempting to ride to the north but I turned to the south riding through Atascocita, Walden and Huffman. This put into the wind until about mile 21 when I turned north onto FM2100. From that point the wind generally was a nice tailwind. This route totaled 33.38 miles at a 14.9 mph average speed. My average speed would be a lot lower except that I shifted to a lower gear once I got the tailwind. Riding west over Lake Houston I glanced at my Garmin Edge a couple of times to check my speed and saw 22+ mph. I needed to put out some extra effort to warm up from my stop at the Huffman Chevron. I had to find a spot out of the wind when I stopped there but even then I got cooled down too much. By the time I reached the west side of Lake Houston I was warmed up enough to feel comfortable.

In 60 days this place will look much different. There will be a party going on celebrating Day 2 of the Tour du… http://t.co/EnE8rZIk5s
I was inspired to ride the trails in Kingwood by a blog post I found yesterday about Houston’s Bayou Trails Network getting some forward movement. Kingwood is in the City of Houston but we are rather isolated from most of the city. We are north of the San Jacinto River which creates a natural barrier for biking trails. The trials network could address this problem. Another possible resource is a pair of bills in the current Texas legislature that would limit the liability of the utility companies in Harris county if they open their rightaway to hiking and biking. Maybe I will ride these trails in the next 10 years.
With the lack of rain the dirt portion of the trails are bone dry which you can see in the picture. If I had to pick a theme for today’s ride I would say dirt and bridges. I rode 16.44 miles. The wind dropped down to almost nothing compared to the last two days at 6 mph variable direction. The temperature was a pleasant 70 degrees and the sun helped warm me up when I came out of the woods. My March miles increased to 143.93 and year to date I rode 825.52 miles. I wore leg warmers, two jerseys and a windbreaker jacket to ward off the chill.
