About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Practicing for the Cold – February 24th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 24, 2013 by Rick AnkrumMarch 3, 2017

When I started on today’s ride the warmed me but as the ride progressed the clouds increased and it got chilly when I hit the shade or rode into the 14 mph ESE wind (18 mph gusts too). I dressed like yesterday with 2 long sleeve jerseys, leg warmers, shorts and my windbreaker jacket. It felt cooler than the 70 degrees on the home weather station when I got home; it must have been the wind. Apparently the other bikers I saw wanted to brave the chill too and they appeared to dress lighter than me.

While I rode I thought about what I might wear this Saturday at the Gator Ride. I checked my closet and the insulated underwear I use to wear is long gone. I did notice that my leg warmers keep my legs warm even in the wind and lower temperatures so maybe they will be enough for my legs. The upper body is another issue. I have a long sleeve knit jersey that I wear when it is chilly so if I add 1 or 2 other long sleeve jerseys that might be enough underneath a windbreaker jacket with elastic sleeve closures. The forecast has not changed much from yesterday.

Baytown Weather Forecast 2-24-2013

Baytown Weather Forecast 2-24-2013

Today I rode south but I varied the route slightly by staying on W. Lake Houston Parkway until Aerobic Dr. I turned left into Walden and back to my typical route onto Huffman. At the corner of FM1960 and Atascocita Shores Drive I saw the first 2 bicyclists. The third one was on Fairlake Drive on the east side of Lake Houston south of FM1960. These riders must have a higher threshold of cold than I do. They wore short sleeve jerseys (the first 2) or a long sleeve jersey (the 3rd one). I hear done of the first two let a loud whew when they made the turn from FM1960 onto Atascocita Shores.

Tomorrow still calls for a 50% chance of not raining so I might get to ride. Today’s route was 31.33 miles bringing the February total up to 282.02 miles, 87 short of the 369 goal. I was somewhat surprised that this week’s total miles is 99.88 from three rides. I think my goal is reachable but I will need some help from the weather. Links to Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for February 23rd

Texbiker.net Posted on February 23, 2013 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 23, 2013

Two kids who desperately need bikes!!
by bikingplumber        Austin Ridge Riders
I just adopted two boys who, get this, have never had a bike of their own!! Fortunately they both know how to ride from borrowing other kids bikes. One is 9 years old at 4’ 1” tall and the other is 11 years old at 4’8” tall. They have both conveyed to me that having a bike of their own is a dream of theirs and I, being a lover of mountain biking myself, can’t wait to hit the trails with them! If you, (or anyone you know), have mountain bikes that would fit these kids please let me…

Double Long Sleeves – February 23rd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 23, 2013 by Rick AnkrumMarch 3, 2017

My thought to ride the Bulldog Ride in Waller got derailed because of the cold (for me anyway) temperature forecast (45 degrees) and the rather high day of ride cost ($45). So I stayed home waiting for the weather to warm up to 60 or more. While I waited I watched the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad spring classic near Ghent, Belgium. While I thought it was cold here the weather there was a -5 C, down in the 20’s F. This is way below my tolerance level but I also don’t get paid to ride either. Every time I watch live streaming races from Europe or elsewhere I am amazed to be sitting in front of my computer and seeing the scenery and the races.

This might have inspired me for my ride. I bundled up because it was 66 degrees and I planned on riding 35+ miles. Bundling up meant two long sleeve jerseys, leg warmers with shorts, windbreaker jacket but half finger gloves. This turned out to be just right with the wind chill factored in. I felt warm the entire ride as the temperature slowly increased to 71 when I got back home.

My route went north on the US59/I69 service road to New Caney, turning left onto FM1485 to Gene Campbell Road and onto FM1314 to head back toward home. I stopped at the new Stripes store at Old Sorters Road and FM1314 for a Diet Pepsi before rolling into Briar Tree and Oakhurst. This route totaled 38.24 miles, better than my goal, at 15.8 mph average speed. This is the first ride since last Tuesday due to wet and cold weather. Today’s ride moves the February total to 250.7 miles leaving 119 to reach my 369 mile goal. I should be able to ride tomorrow but Monday has a 50% chance of rain but maybe I can sneak a few miles in. Wednesday and Thursday look dry and in the 60’s. Look at the slides below for more ride data. Links to Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com data.

This coming Saturday I am registered for the Gator Ride in Baytown, TX. I started checking the weather and it does not look like it is going to be warm but it will be clear. As the week progresses I will have a Gator Ride weather watch.

Baytown Weather 2-23-2013

I will need to dig deep in my closet for gear to keep me warm on this ride. What a way to start March riding!
