About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Compensating – February 7th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 7, 2013 by Rick AnkrumMarch 10, 2017

I compensated for today’s ride. I expected 81 degrees (based on the weather forecast) but settled for 71 degrees. To compensate I wore leg warmers, a long sleeve jersey, a short sleeve jersey, bike shorts and a windbreaker jacket. I overdressed but I was comfortable. My gauge for overdressing is the amount of sweat I generate. At the end of the ride my bandana was soaked, both jerseys were soaked and the jacket damp around the edges. Overcast skies and a 9 mph SW breeze did not help me get warm at the start.

Tuesday I rode to the south and east so today I rotated to the north going up US59 to Community Drive and then turning back to the south going through Valley Ranch. This route totaled 28.76 miles at a 15.0 mph average speed. This brings the week’s miles up to 76.73 and February miles now total 135.28.

Yesterday was an off day due to rain so I did some maintenance on my road bike by waxing the chain. I was reading the latest issue of Velo magazine and they did a comparison of various chain lubes. Paraffin wax came out on top. I use a Fry Baby to melt the wax and dip the chain in it. The best feature of wax is being able to touch the chain and not get coated in grease. The downside to wax is the waxing frequency increases which means a removable master link comes in very handy.

Smooth is Fast
by Andrew            Neilson Development Team
“Smooth is fast” is a mantra that every Devo rider has heard 1,000 times. This is one of the first things we try to teach everyone. Every root or rock that you slam your wheels into robs you of precious momentum. Stay light on the bike, and try to float through rough sections. Keep your weight off the saddle and your knees bent when coasting, allowing your legs to act as suspension to smooth things out and keep your bike rolling. Lift your wheels over obstacles whenever possible, especially your front wheel. This…

Cycling Legalese – Bike Traffic Accident 101
by Brendan Kevenides, P.C.        UrbanVelo.org
Welcome to Cycling Legalese, an online cycling law column from everyday cyclist and Chicago based injury lawyer, Brendan Kevenides. Unfortunately traffic accidents are a reality for city cyclists, in this column we go over what to remember in order to protect yourself legally if you’re involved in a collision.

Q: What should I do if I am involved in a collision while out riding?

Brendan Kevenides, P.C.:Whether hit by a car or hurled into the street courtesy of a pothole, let’s face it, in the first moments following a crash you probably will not be at your best. You may not accurately process what happened do to pain, shock, surging adrenaline or all three. So, let’s keep this as simple as possible; remember the 5 C’s, Calm down, Call 911, Camera, Communicate & Care.

Step 1 – Calm Down. In the immediate aftermath of a crash you will likely be dizzy with questions. Did that just…

100KM of Slaughter Creek – 2-16-13
by John         AustinBike.com
So, you’ve ridden Slaughter Creek, and most likely said either “hey, it was convenient” or “wow, that wasn’t what I was expecting.  However, if you want a grueling shot at Slaughter Creek, you need to check out the 100KM race on February 16th.

This ride will start at 11:00 in the morning, a little later in the day than some of the earlier races.

Slaughter Creek is a pretty tame trail down in the southwest corner of Austin, on the way out to Dripping Springs.  While it is a multi-use trail (including horses), it’s distance from downtown means that it will be vacant of most non-bike traffic.

For more information:…

New Trail Building at Buescher State Park
by John         AustinBike.com
There is work going on to add more singletrack to the central Texas area, this time at Buescher State Park.  For those of you that have ridden at Rocky Hill Ranch – Smithville, this is the park that you see just after you turn off of 71 and head east for the final few miles.

There is a thread going on at Bike Mojo, so be sure to stay up to date with the details.

http://www.bikemojo.com/speak/showthread.php?t=94487

If this is anything like Rocky Hill (and geographically, it should be), then the trails will be a lot of fun, and there…

Path to link Travis Heights with boardwalk

Work crews are starting work this week on a trail connecting Norwood Tract Park near East Riverside Drive to the boardwalk under construction on the south shore of Lady Bird Lake, according to a city of Austin news release.

Denton Bike Plans, Now and Future
by devintaylor            Bike Denton
In the past few months bike riders have noticed several changes around Denton. The addition of bike lanes to the west ends of Oak and Hickory is almost complete. The UNT pedestrian bridge has opened, offering an alternative to the North Texas Blvd bridge and Bonnie Brae underpass. The main span of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Pedestrian Bridge has been placed over Loop 288 and will soon provide a connection from Corinth, NCTC, and far southeast Denton to downtown (as well as providing a good route to cargo bike riders on their trips to Home Depot and Target). Tonight, City Council will hear a plan for improvements to East Hickory Street that will include back-in parking, a layout that dramatically…

Who says its over 40 days until… – February 5th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 5, 2013 by Rick AnkrumMarch 3, 2017

Who says its over 40 days until spring officially arrives? You wouldn’t know it from the weather today. After the rain yesterday today turned around once the early morning fog burned off. I started the ride today at 12:45 and finished at 3:37. During the ride mostly cloudy skies meant the sun floated in and out but the temperature didn’t ranging from 76 at the start to 79 when I finished. In Huffman I saw two different time and temperature boards with different temperatures: Action Sign said 75 and Huffman ISD said 78. No stray rain clouds on the radar today to dodge. Tomorrow probably will be wet with a 70% of precipitation.

Since I only managed 12.8 miles yesterday and with the rain coming tomorrow I wanted to get some extra miles from this ride towards the monthly goal of 369 miles to match February 2012. So I stretched my normal route to Huffman by adding a mile to the start and then adding 2 or 3 miles in Huffman by going north on FM2100 turning left onto Smith Road to get back to FM1960. This increased the route to 35.18 miles. The spring like weather helped me average 15.7 mph. I saw one other bicyclist on Kings River Drive on the return to home. Check the slides below for more data from the ride.
