About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

No Groundhog Here – February 2nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 2, 2013 by Rick AnkrumMarch 10, 2017

The wind dropped off today so I did not dress like yesterday. I wore a short sleeve jersey, long sleeve jersey and bike shorts. At time I was chilly but as long as I could get into the sun I warmed up. Starting 2:15 PM the temperature was 74 and when I pulled into my driveway at 4:17 it rested at 75 degrees. Mostly cloudy skies and a calm wind helped make the ride comfortable.

Today I rotated my route to a northerly one riding to Community Drive and then turning back south riding through Valley Ranch and other housing areas west of US59. I did not see any other bicyclists or groundhogs. When I was growing up I used to visit my Grandmother in Gratoit, OH. Not too far out her back door was an embankment where several groundhogs lived in their burrows. During the winter sometimes I would see one of them stick their head out and then go back in. The recent warm weather in southeast Texas makes me think winter is on the way out.

I rode 28.29 miles today at a 15.2 mph average speed. My year to date miles now total 367.94. The slides below summarize other metrics.

David Carter (D.C.) Strong and steady is how D.C. is best described. Very noticeable in the peloton with those golden locks peeking out the back of the helmet. He seems to be most at peace in the mayhem of a Cat 3 sprint. On our Tuesday and Thursday night Big Steamer rides DC typically takes the sprint. It’s almost a forgone conclusion when you see him next to you on the way to the line. Thoughts of whom you can…

Loop Back to Warmth – February 1st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 1, 2013 by Rick AnkrumMarch 10, 2017

My last ride was Monday January 28th so I was looking forward to get out riding today. I delayed the start until 1:57 PM to get my chores out of the way and to let the temperature warm up some. My home weather station showed 72.7 degrees so I thought a short sleeve jersey over a long sleeve one and shorts would be enough but as I rode through the shadows during the first mile I doubted my decision. So I looped back home and got my windbreaker jacket. I am glad I did. I felt much warmer for the rest of the ride. I noticed the wind seemed to be blowing stronger than I thought and when I got home the IAH weather station reported a SE 18 mph wind with 23 mph gusts. No wonder I noticed the chill when I first started. The scattered clouds allowed the sun to shine and it warmed me up when I got in the sun but I could feel the wind chill even with my windbreaker jacket.

Riding to Huffman I saw two other bicyclists who must have stronger heat generators than I do because they were dressed lighter. I could feel the chill as I rode across Lake Houston both directions. The route came in at 30.26 miles at a nice 15.6 mph average speed despite the strong wind. Top speed was 22.0 mph and cadence averaged 75 RPM. This is a good start for February. In February 2012 I rode 15 days for a total of 368.64 miles. The first ride was also on February 1st for 29.54 miles. The 2013 year miles to day total miles 339.65.

Yes, That IS a Bulge. Illustrating the Value of the “A” Part of “ABC Quick Check”
Hmm, my rear tire’s had a real SLOW leak for about three weeks now. Each morning, I pump it up from about 60psi to somewhere north of 100. Now, It’s developed a “bump bump bump” with each revolution. The symptom isn’t getting better.

Looking at it, there’s a bit of an “owie” on the tread. Look at the picture carefully and you can see it – a reverse curve that represents a bulge in…

Annual Tour de Houston gets green theme, and date
Houston Chronicle
Joe Turner, director for the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, said the annual bike ride, which is expected to draw 5,000 riders, raises money for Houston’s parks and green spaces. The RE-Plant Houston campaign was announced in January 2012 after severe drought conditions dramatically increased the need to protect what greenery was left in Houston. The mayor and Roger Plank, president and chief corporate officer of Apache Corp., planted the three-millionth tree in Memorial Park last weekend. …

Sitting in with Sam and Stephanie
by djcurtin                It’s Time To Ride!

Ever wanted to see how far you could ride your bike? Ever done an errand by bike? Ever wondered how much you could carry on two-wheels? Or maybe even thought about living off your bike?

Bicycle touring might be for you if you followed that or a similar line of thought. But the tought of carrying everything you’d need or want for a trip can be a bit daunting. After all, if you’ve never done it before, how do you know how to do it?

We sat down recently with Sam and Stephanie House to talk bike touring. If you’ve been around the shop or some of our events, you’ve seen Sam and/or Stephanie riding, turning a wrench, helping out, and basically…

Memorial Park Ride then to Outlaw Dave’s
Register Now            GHORBA
A bit of riding and socializing at Outlaw Dave’s

So this all started with a call from Jaime Hellcat who host a car show on Sundays at  Outlaw Dave’s Worldwide Headquarters.  What do hot rods, motorcycles, jeeps, and mountainbikes have in common?  Great passion for our interests/hobbies…. I guess we will find out.  Hellcat has ridden the MP trails on occassion in the past and is fired up about us joining the party.

So we will start (weather permitting) with a group ride at Memorial Park at 11:30 a.m. We’ll meet at the parking lot near the soccer field. This is going to be a laid back ride for everyone.  For those experienced group riders, I have it on good authority Mike Strawn will be there to make sure no rider gets lost or dehydrated.   After riding the trails, we will head over to Outlaw Dave’s (corner of…
