About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Help a Fellow Rider
AustinBike.com
by John
A tragedy happened last week to a fellow rider.  While it happened on the roads and not a trail, it is a stark reminder of why we all need to be careful and help others in need.

Two riders were on Parmer, on the shoulder, when a car that was trying to avoid a cardboard box in their lane, jumped onto the shoulder, hitting both riders.

According to some reports, the car was going in excess of 80MPH, which is well over the speed limit, and the driver chose to avoid the obstacle without checking to see if the shoulder was clear. That put both of the bikers in the hospital and one still to this day is not conscious and is suffering from a variety of critical injuries. She is in critical and life threaten condition, and still has not…

At Texas school, it’s a merry Christmas due to “Elves”, Chinese bicycles
www.globaltimes.cn
Beneath his plastic helmet, Jesus Moreno wore a big grin as he boarded one of 575 bikes made in China and sent to his elementary school to help make a merry Christmas and improve grades.

“I never had a bike before,” said Jesus, 11.

Jesus and his fellow Mary J. Scroggins Elementary School pupils, pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade, were among 10,000 students from at- or below-poverty level homes within eight counties in the Houston area, Texas, to receive new bicycles on Saturday from Elves and More.

The Houston-based nonprofit Elves and More has provided free bicycles to students in southeast Texas schools in low-income neighborhoods for 10 years. The program is the brain child of founder David Moore, who heads a family jewelry business after retiring a decade ago as a…

Early Rain Leaves Overcast Sky – December 15th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 15, 2012 by Rick AnkrumMarch 17, 2017

The middle of December and 76 degrees does not make you think of Christmas but it is a good riding temperature. An overcast sky and some rain earlier in the morning did not keep from taking the Motobecane 700HT mountain bike out for a ride on the trails. Evidently I wasn’t the only person thinking along this line since I encountered a number of dogs out walking their owners and some just plain walking people too. Some places on the trails must have received more rain than we did at my house with a few puddles and water standing in the gutter at some of the street crossings.

No video of the ride today. I rode 16.53 miles at a 12.7 mph average speed, 20.7 mph max speed, and 71 RPM average cadence. Riding time was 1:17:48 with only 2:11 stop time. The trails don’t have many traffic lights so I wasn’t stopped too long. The ride summary is in the slide show below. I starting to use the Golden Cheetah program more to record my ride data. It seems to calculate the metrics closer to Garmin Connect than SportTracks does.

Tomorrow there is a 60% chance of rain so I may not get an opportunity to ride but Monday and Tuesday look promising with 72 degree highs and a clear sky. At the place where I usually see turtles there was one turtle slowly climbing up on a partial submerged tree. I would say the turtle would be sunning itself but the there was no sun today.

Golf and biking: Equally good for you?
By Matthew Heimer                blogs.marketwatch.com
It’s Saturday afternoon at the brewpub, and your bike-loving neighbor – still wearing his unsightly, skintight riding gear – is riding a wave of euphoria as he exhaustively describes the 120-mile ride he just finished. You, meanwhile, are clad in your knits, nursing a sore back and a smarting ego from your weekly trip around the links.

He looks fitter than you. He’s got the glow you lack. But new research suggests that he’s not likely to live any longer than you.  According to a study of mortality data on a group of…

by djcurtin
Bicycle Sport Shop has a rich tradition of supporting riders and racers in all disciplines of cycling. While we’re probably most known for our mountain bike team, and more recently for the guys from Super Squadra, for 2013 everyone that wants to commit to come along for the ride is welcome!

We want everyone to be a part of the Bicycle Sport Shop family. As a result, we’re creating four new clubs—the Bicycle Sport Shop Road, Mountain, Triathlon, and Cyclocross Clubs—open to all riders of any ability, with the goal of growing the cycling community here…
