About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Radar Warning – December 8th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 8, 2012 by Rick AnkrumMarch 17, 2017

I was keeping an eye on the weather radar because the sky had some dark clouds. My intent was to ride the Huffman route but as I watched the radar rain formations were between me and there. So I changed my route and headed north to New Caney. To be different I rode Loop 494 all the way from Kings Manor to New Caney. I don’t remember doing that before. In the last couple of years Loop 494 has been resurfaced and when they did that a nice shoulder was added. Traffic on Loop 494 is somewhat lighter than the northbound US59 service road. Contrary to the Huffman area going north showed no rain clouds so off I went. Normally on this route direction I ride through Valley Ranch housing development but today I stayed on the southbound service road all th way to Kingwood Drive. I did stop at the Porter Exxon at FM1314 for a large Diet Pepsi though.

Before my ride I went to Sprockets Bike Shop on Ford Road for a bike swap meet. I met James Webster who I have exchanged several emails with. There were several people there with a wide variety of bike parts and even some bikes. Two low rider bikes were on display. somebody spent some serious time working them.

I ended up riding 27.27 miles at a 15.1 mph average speed, 25.3 mph (SportTracks) top speed and 77.4 RPM cadence. Since this route was a little shorter than my typical this direction riding time was1:48:09 plus 47:06 time stopped drinking that large Diet Pepsi and messing with my cell phone. The weather held up to the forecast with 80 degrees when I got back home. The average temperature today is 63 so we are enjoying some warm weather. That will leave on Monday with a high of 50 degrees. If that happens I will be not be riding outside. Tomorrow, Sunday, should get to 79 degrees before the drop. My mileage totals: 96.84 this week, 154.73 for the month, 6431.89 YTD.

I read several times one of the most frequent emergency room injuries is head trauma. I thought this article helps to understand the problems.

Head first: The variability of injury, and recovery, from traumatic brain injuries
by VeloNews.com
Assessment of brain function following a crash courtesy Medicine of Cycling, www.medicineofcycling.com
Editor’s note: This article, on the individual variability and treatment of traumatic brain injuries in sport, originally appeared in the December 2012 issue of Velo, The Danger Issue. The concussion assessment graphic was adapted from a chart created by Medicine of Cycling.

The physical abilities of professional cyclists are hard to fathom. Many riders will have nearly a hundred race days in one season, not counting the thousands of training miles they will log. Crashes happen. Usually they’re minor, but too often, they can be deadly serious.

It is a tremendous challenge to be able to assess riders properly when they crash in a major event. Medical personnel must jockey through mechanics, motorcycles, and photographers, scanning for who’s not moving, who’s bloody, and who might…

It’s time for another installment of the I Bike Richardson series, where we put a face on Richardson cyclists. We’d like to introduce Sarah Townsend. She took the time to answer a few questions about biking. Enjoy:

Harry Moss Park, Dallas Mountain Bike Trail
by Shawn McAfee            Texas Mountain Bike Trails

The Harry Moss Park mountain bike trail is located along the bank of the White Rock Creek and buffers Greenville Avenue, Royal Lane and Walnut Hill in Downtown Dallas.

This is a beginner to intermediate trail with nearly 6 miles of mostly benchcut singletrack to ride. The trail at Harry Moss Park has very similar terrain to both Rowlett Creek Preserve and Oak Cliff Nature Preserve, but with more “human elements” incorporated into the basic flow of the trail. Things like cement and brick to reinforce areas , wooden beams to build berms and…

City Expands Bike Sharing Program (Video)
By: Robert Price            Fox29
Expect to see more bike sharing stations around town over the next year.

Thursday city council approved a one-million-dollar expansion of San Antonio’s “B-Cycle” program.

The program lets you rent a bike at one location and then return it at another.

Most of the city’s thirty kiosks are downtown.

Now another fifteen are set to go up, including stations at the Witte Museum, Brackenridge Park, and the San Antonio Zoo.

“And by having the bikes become more visible in our…

Beating the Cold Front – December 7th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 7, 2012 by Rick AnkrumMarch 17, 2017

The road bike was called on again for today’s ride to Community Drive and then Valley Ranch. This northerly route was 28.82 miles long at a 15.3 mph average speed, 22.2 mph top speed and 79.2 RPM average cadence. After riding my mountain bike yesterday the road bike felt light and easy to get up to speed. No knobby tire buzz either. Riding time came in at 1:53:00 plus 10:03 stop time. Mileage standings after the ride: 69.57 this week, 127.47 for December and 6404.62 YTD.

With the projected cold front arriving late Sunday or early Monday I need to get some riding time in to offset the days of cold. So far I see Monday’s high at 49 degrees. Contrast that to today’s range of 79 (start) to 77 (finish) temperature. I would prefer fewer clouds today but it was warm enough that a short sleeve jersey kept me just right. I wore a pair of Bellweather Forma shorts for the second time. These fit snug and the seat pad is different from what I normally wear but I do like them. Just in case I do like them I bought two pair on sale. December is a good time to buy summer bike gear.

Mountain Biking and Back Pain: How to Prevent It and Cure It!
betterride.net
Note: Before doing anything to do with your back make sure something isn’t really wrong such as a bulging disc, slipped disc, fractured disc, etc. See a doctor and make sure your body can handle these therapeutic exercises before you start.

I have finally rid myself of the back pain that has bothered me most of my adult life, but has been really annoying in the last ten years (I honestly thought all mountain bikers had some back pain, it was the price we pay for having so much fun!). Before I share my cure with you, I want you to understand three important things. First, back pain is a symptom; the cause may not be your back. We are going to fix the causes, not just rid the pain. Second, the “cure” I have found is a process, a process that will require effort at least five days a week the rest of your life. Third, if you follow this process you will be rewarded by getting a lot more…

Austin council member looks to open trails overnight
By Ben Wear                www.statesman.com
Looking to address a recent spike in pedestrian and cyclist deaths caused by auto collisions, Austin City Council Member Chris Riley will ask his colleagues Thursday to legalize use of three main city hike-and-bike trails 24 hours a day as a temporary experiment.

Riley’s proposal does not include any money for lighting or any additional police presence on or near the three trails. The proposal generated concerns Wednesday about its potential effectiveness, and about a proposal from a leading city official that…

Looking for beginning/intermediate riders around Austin
by gatorgrizz27                    forums.mtbr.com
Hey guys,
I just moved here from Tallahassee, and haven’t really ridden in about 6 months. I would say I was an intermediate level rider there, but the trails there were mostly hardpack clay with a lot of roots and some embedded limestone, so the loose rocks and gravel out here takes a bit of getting used to.

I like riding fast, flowing trails with a lot of turns and short technical climbs and downhills where you won’t end up in the ER if you screw up. Unfortunately I haven’t found much of that around here.

So far I’ve ridden Barton Creek Greenbelt, and found the sections that I tried to be above my skill level. Basically I could ride for a little while, then had to get off and walk the steep big rocky sections. The stair like rocks more than about 2 feet high I’m not really comfortable climbing or descending.

I rode Walnut Creek and there were some fun sections of single track with good climbs through the woods, but they were all pretty short.

I found St. Edwards yesterday and rode the side on the parking area of the creek, it was fun but really easy.

Today I rode part of Thumper but the loose rocks kept giving me trouble. I had to walk up Jack’s section, and then almost cleaned…

West Loop Status

We have a new contact person with BTU, Allen. The West Loop is still closed until further notice. Here is what we know:
The issue is that the release of the west loop to the public is based on the approval of the Texas Dam Commission of the State of Texas. They base their decision on multiple factors  and in the last review they stated that the growth of the vegetative cover over the areas that were being worked on was not acceptable yet. So until they are satisfied with that and other details the area will…
