About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Turkey Roll marks changing of seasons
Kiwanis’ race, now in 30th year, comes as weather turns cooler
By Megan Gray / Staff Writer            Denton Record-Chronicle

Nearly 1,000 bicyclists gathered at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Saturday morning for the Denton Breakfast Kiwanis Club’s 30th annual Turkey Roll.

The bicycle rally started decades ago with an idea from former club president Joe Holland.

“I just thought this would be a good way to get the community together to do something good,” Holland said. “All the money raised from today’s event goes directly back into the community for our seven children’s groups. We do not use any money for administrative costs that we raise for the race; it goes from…

Finally Able to Ride Again – November 18th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 18, 2012 by Rick AnkrumMarch 24, 2017

I finally got back on the bike today. My last ride on November 9th was followed by an all day meeting on Saturday November 10th. When I got home from my meeting I noticed my sinus were not right. From then until today I battled sinusitis. I have not felt like biking and the cool weather did not help any. Today the temperature was 71 as I started the ride and slowly moved up to 74 when I finished after riding 1:15:54. Clear skies and low humidity are appreciated. It is supposed to warm up a few degrees as the week goes along.

With my not feeling so good all week I thought a mountain bike ride would be best. So I rode my Motobecane 700HT on the Kingwood Trails. I wanted to get 12 miles or more and ended up riding 15.41 miles. Since I rode my mountain bike the average speed was only 12.2 mph with 18.2 mph for my top speed. Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com disagreed slightly with these numbers but just tenths of a mph.November miles now total 178.64 and YTD total 6118.86 miles.

The cooling temperatures and shorter daylight are turning the leaves to their fall colors. Another contributing factor is the lack of rain. After 18 days I can only remember one very light rain during the night. My grass is looking like it did last year in the drought and the Houston Chronicle SCIGuy is starting to talk about drought conditions and percentages again. As I rode south over the San Jacinto River on W. Lake Houston Parkway I could see the water level is down some and one log stuck up out of the water with a sunbathing turtle soaking up the heat. When I returned back I looked for the log so that I could take a picture but I did not remember the location.

I am almost recovered and with a little warmer weather I hope to get some serious road miles this coming week.

is great for cycling because of the many, many paved Farm to Market and County roads and
the relatively few cars. We’ll have shorter rides on Friday and Sunday, with a longer ride on
Saturday.

So, make your plans, and send email to…

Annual Christmas Party
Hill Country Bicycle Touring Club
There will be food, music, gifts, games, and fun at the annual Christmas party. Be sure to attend with the whole family.
The annual Christmas party will be held on Friday, December 7th, 6:30 PM at the Roosevelt Park Clubhouse in San Antonio (same place as last year). This year we will try a “Potluck” meal with meat provided by the club and side dishes provided by the members. I have attached a food list, on which you can put your preference of a side dish or dessert to bring. When you have decided what to bring, please email Amanda at xxxxxxxxx, so she can track “who is bringing what”. Also, please let her know if you plan to attend and not bringing a side dish. This year there will be no charge for the dinner, but we need to have a head count so folks will know what quantities of food to bring. …

Accumulations
by Steve A                DFW Point-to-Point
A week ago Friday marked my 400th consecutive commute since the last time I drove to work – February 9, 2011. Over that period of time, accumulations have built up.

Mileage Accumulations
The obvious accumulation is the mileage and how those are distributed. Namely, I tend to simply keep riding a bike to work every morning because it is set up. That mileage switches to a different bike when the first one becomes inconvenient due to maintenance or other needs. This year, I rode one bike the first couple of months, and another the rest of the year.

Wear Accumulations
Trunk Bag Earlier This Year
Wear is a commuter’s equivalent of rust – it never sleeps.  For example, I noted early this year that my bike…

Thanksgiving at Lake Murray
Lone Star Cyclists
You are all invited to the second annual Lone Star Cyclist Thanksgiving at Lake Murray State Park and Resort.

This year Tim and Karl have planned some awesome routes that include a little visit to the Arbuckle Mountains.  But hey, our booties will need a little break so Sandy has found other activities to enjoy. This is a perfect trip to bring non-cycling family.

…Thursday
8:00 Breakfast in the lodge restaurant.
9:00 Ride starts for the 24-mile ride around the lake(http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1878380 ) with 1554 feet of climbing and a max grade 5.3. This ride offers many low rollers.  Sandy did not find this too challenging, but was a bit pooped by the end of the ride.  We will take a left out of the Lake Murray Resort and then drop down into Buzzards Roost to pick up any riders who are camping and did not come up for breakfast.  This pull out offers a great view of Tuckers Tower.  For those needing a bit more challenge and riding fast, I suggest they take advantage of the many turnouts to various camping areas along the way.  This will give you more challenging miles and keep you closer to slower riders.  Bring…

Changing hearts on two wheels: Wounded warriors’ inspiring ride
by Jeff Anastasio / Kens5.com

Michael Lage probably shouldn’t be here.

“In 2007, my convoy was hit by an IED. My vehicle had five people in it,” Lage recalled.

“I was the only survivor.”

He lost his left hand and right thumb in the attack, and he suffered severe burns. For many people, such injuries would make a 500-mile bicycle ride across Texas impossible. …

University of Texas professor explores cultural phenomenon of doping
by Mark Johnson                VeloNews.com
University professor and author John Hoberman sees a need for culture-shift in cycling and is interested in bringing his unique perspective, decades in the making, to the table to help cycling move forward in the wake of the Armstrong Affair.

The chair of the Germanic Studies program at the University of Texas-Austin, Hoberman has dedicated nearly three decades of his life to studying doping in sport. Specifically, Hoberman has examined how performance- and image-enhancing drugs intersect with forces as large as international geopolitics and finance, and as mundane…

RHR to Bastrop SP Loop
Buescher SP to Bastrop SP training loop

Plan on doing Fat Chuck’s Revenge, Excruciation Exam 2013, Miles of DisComfort along with the “Epic loop” out in Lajitas in Feb and the ouachita challenge.

I’ve never been successful at marathon events in the past because I treated them as a long XC race and would do fantastic at first passing racers left and right then a few hours into it the wheels would fall off the cart and it was a death march.

Taking a whole new approach this time miles and elevation plan for this weekend is to do four back to back big loops out at double lake that’s all of the “old” trail and enter the new trails at Henry Lake north and do the new stuff pop out at the trail of woe and do it all over again that should give us approx 40+ miles.

Working on getting what to eat while riding down also. …

Dallas Riders – Question about East Dallas Loop (Sunnyvale)
by rgilliam2004                    www.bikeforums.net
Guys

I don’t know about you but this time change and getting dark at 5 is killing my riding. I have been riding this “East Dallas Loop” on Sunday’s and really like it but wanted to find out if any one has been using this route on Saturday morning also? What is the traffic like and is it “safe” route on Saturdays?

I am asking as it seems the roads could be really busy based on the area and since it follows the freeway out to Sunnyvale. I really just don’t want to get out there and find out there is a lot of fast moving traffic or the roads are heavly used.
