About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cool Weather Drives Me to the Trails – October 29th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 29, 2012 by Rick AnkrumMarch 31, 2017

I kept waiting and waiting for the temperature to get to or even near the 70 degrees promised. By 12:30 it only reached 66 degrees (33% humidity) so I decided if I am going to ride I need to dress warm and get on the bike. Since the warmer temperature stayed away I chose to ride my mountain bike on the Kingwood trails. I set a goal of 17 miles and I ended up at 18.38 miles, average speed of 12.7 mph (SportTracks). Garmin Connect and RidewithGPS.com are more generous with an average speed of 13.0 mph and 12.9 mph respectively. The clear sky invited me to the trails and I thought it would be cool due to the shade but there was enough sun that I kept warm. My choice of a long sleeve jersey, wind jacket and leg warmers helped proved to be just right. This is the first solid cold snap since earlier in the year. By the end of the week the temperature moves up to the 80’s again. I am anxious for it to get here.

There wasn’t much traffic on the trails so I managed a decent average speed. But I noticed my legs did not power the pedals as easily as when I am on my road bike. I don’t know if this is a function of position gearing, bike weight or some other factor. Riding time came in at 1:27:06 plus only 4:02 time stopped.

My mileage after today’s ride: 611.08 miles for October and 5907.93 miles YTD. I am getting closer to the 6,000 mile mark. This cool weather will slow me down some.

by dickdavid            Bike Friendly Richardson
Yesterday, Bike Friendly Richardson, was invited to have a table at the Cyclesomatic Bike Fair – hosted by Bike Friendly Oak Cliff. It started off a bit chilly, but it ended up being a great day.

Along with many booths and a huge crowd, there was a cyclocross race. I’d never seen one in person, so it was pretty exciting to watch.

There was also a bike powered smoothie station hosted by BikeDFW as well as representatives from Metroplex BMX, Pedal Power, Bicycles, Inc and ReGeared. Good Karma Kitchen was there with some tasty food and the…

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for October 27th

Texbiker.net Posted on October 27, 2012 by Rick AnkrumOctober 27, 2012

13th Annual Fredericksburg Fall Foliage Frolic
The Fredericksburg Fall Foliage Frolic, always one of the popular rides in the fall in the Texas Hill Country, is taking on additional interest this year, as new routes are being introduced.   Routes that start/end at the Tatsch House within Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park on Hwy 16 S in Fredericksburg take riders over scenic roads and bucolic country lanes that are literally a step back in time.  This year’s 13th Annual edition gets underway at 8:00 AM on Sat., Nov. 3.  There will not be a mass start, which gives the ride its reputation for being one of the most laid-back, friendly, relaxing and fun rides to ever come down the pike.  Rides of 28, 45, or 60 miles offer something for all levels of riders. There’s a post ride meal included with registration.  The weather portends to be outstanding for the day of the event, where you’ll be able to hang with friends on the patio of the Tatsch House and enjoy some of that good Texas Hill Country hospitality.

San Antonio BikeShare Station

[wppa type=”album” album=”45″ size=”auto”][/wppa]

My wife and I are in San Antonio for a couple days of R & R. I did not realize when we selected our hotel (Sunset Best Western, 1103 E. Commerce) that a Bike Share location was just across the street from the hotel parking lot. By the time I noticed them the cold front and rain arrived. I will think about trying them out when it is warmer and drier.

GHORBA Road Trip to Pace Bend & Walnut Creek!
by soccerdude            forums.mtbr.com
Now that the weather is cooling off it’s a good time for us to head up to Austin for a weekend road trip! With all the excellent mtb trails in the area it’s hard to decide which ones to ride so I’ve selected two of the most popular that are easy enough for most beginners but still challenging for more experienced riders. We’ll meet at Pace Bend Park the morning of Saturday November 3rd and assemble our groups at 10:00 am. If after the ride you’re still jones-ing for some more gnar you can drive a short 20 minutes down the road to Muleshoe Bend State Park to get your fix. We won’t have ride leaders at Muleshoe but the trail is easy enough to follow without getting lost. Camping is available at Pace Bend for those who dig that scene as well as swimming in the Pedernales River. Brrrr! Not the camping type? There are plenty of motel rooms in nearby Austin for those who are less adventurous. Sunday morning at 9:30 am we’ll…

3. Stay on 3232 until it “T’s” into FM 2766 (almost at the Pedernales Falls State Park entrance – FM 2766
becomes County Road 201 at this point). Turn Right/East
4. Continue a little over 2 MILES down County Road 201 at about 2 miles you will cross a cattle guard and notice the ranch’s white
wooden fence on your left
5. Take a left at the ranch entrance: You’ll see a sign that says “FLAT CREEK CROSSING.”

Demo List (bring ID/credit card, pedals if you have, must be 18 etc) In the spirit of fairness first…

Offshore Work and Keeping Up Training
by Ken            Texas Racing Life
Sometimes my job requires me to go offshore for different projects.  I fly into New Orleans and take a helicopter out to the different production platforms. Right now, I’m out at Holstein, pictured below. I’m working a wireline job, where you enter a well and do different procedures to help it produce more oil. I like going offshore because it gives me a chance to be right at the wells and not be in the office. Also, there is someone to do laundry and cook for me. Better than I get at home!  Just kidding Ally….

Speed, agility key at ASUFit events
By Bill Cullins                San Angelo Standard-Times
If you happened to have been on Johnson Street near the ASU softball fields on Wednesday evenings during October, you may have noticed something strange.

Cyclists were all over the undeveloped open space next to the ball fields, racing around courses marked by pin flags, stakes and yellow safety tape.

They left trails of dust on the straight and level sections, pedaled up and down small hills and occasionally dismounted to jump over barriers while carrying their bikes. …
