Anthills Work Party Saturday 10/13 8:30 AM – The Anthills crew will be working on removing old bridges, cleaning up the trail and completing a few trail work projects.

General Meeting Monday 10/15 7:00 PM – GHORBA will be hosting a general meeting at Star Pizza on Norfolk. Come out and meet the Board of Directors as well as your fellow members. We will be covering topics on current events facing the trails as well as opportunities for the organization. If you have an idea for the board this is a great time to come out and share it. Since pizza will be provided, please RSVP if you are planning to attend.

Group Ride Saturday 10/20 10:00 AM – GHORBA is hosting a beginners only group ride at Sugar Land Memorial Park on 10/20. Much of the well shaded, triple-wide track runs along the banks of the Brazos River which offers a couple of nice views from high up. Roots, rocks, and long climbs are nowhere to be found! Instead the Justin P. Brindley trail offers smooth, flowy, and fun track with minimal sand and a couple of very short uphills. Perfect for new riders looking to improve their bike handling skillsGHORBA will provide drinking water, Gatorade, and light snacks for all riders. GHORBA group rides are open to all bikers and not just GHORBA members so bring your friends and family!

Here’s an interesting question, especially coming so close to that national monument to the benefits of ruthless colonialism known as Columbus Day. Laid up after shoulder surgery last summer, 17-year-old Ian Kramer knew he needed a project to occupy his time.

So Kramer, who seems to have more hobbies than most teenage boys have video games, decided to combine two of his interests: music and raising money for Bike MS, an annual bike ride benefitting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He has participated in the ride since 2008.

The terrain has changed dramatically past Austin. The dry endless moonscape desert-type land to the west has turned lush and green. Ranches with horses, cows, sheep, goats line the road. 2012 DORBA Fall Series Race at Rowlett Creek Preserve (RCP)

The final round of the DORBA Fall series lands at Rowlett Creek Preserve (RCP).  With many of the overall points races coming down to the final round. The racing should be close, intense, and racers will be going all out for the win.

No Limp Flags Today – October 11th Bike Ride

The 16 mph southeast wind pushed the flags straight out. The route I chose started to the north and continued that general direction until the 10 mile point. Then I rode west to US59 and turned into the wind going south on the service road. I guess I forgot the gear combination I used while I went north but I noticed the pedaling into the wind required a big effort. When I stopped at the Texaco station at the entrance into Valley I looked at the rear cassette and realized I needed to go up one gear. The effort dropped significantly but I still maintained the same speed. When I got to FM1314 and Valley Ranch I checked the Garmin for my averaged speed and found 16.3 mph but it dropped to 16.2 mph just as I looked at it. The average speed ended up at 15.7 mph by the time I got back home.

The route to New Caney and then Valley Ranch totaled 27.45 miles. I covered that distance in 1:45:09 plus 3:46 time stopped. So after today’s ride my mileage stands at 119.6 miles this week, 318.50 miles for October and 5615..35 miles YTD. Another 35 miles and I will equal my total miles for last year, the most miles I ever rode in one year. Other data and map links: Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com.

When I got home I realized that my wrist bands were not soaked with perspiration. The temperature during my ride was 85 to 90 so the wrist bands should have been soaked. The only difference is the sun screen I used today. I think that is the reason. In the past I used Banana Boat Sport 50 but the bottle is almost empty so I used the WalMart Equate Sport 50 spray on sun screen. I will continue to monitor this.

Baylor played host to an exhilarating and varied weekend of racing at Cameron Park in Waco.  The short track course was quite short at approximately three quarters of a mile, with a fast-paced rocky descent leading immediately into switchback climbs.  This course was wild, testing the technical skill of all riders.  Rachel Cook of the University of North Texas finished in first for the women’s A category.

I did the Tour das Hugel route last week and I was pleased with it. The cue sheets served me well. I didn’t feel like I was put in any dangerous traffic situations and it seemed like a good mix of difficult hills and good scenery.The one downside is that the route is a little repetitive and you end up seeing some of the same things more than once. One big loop would be nice instead of two small ones, but…

Cyclist May Use Full Lane…But Should We?

The “bicycle may use full lane” signs have started emerging all over, and one just recently popped up on a road that leads to several of my training routes.  But I’m not so sure about them.

The history of these signs (also known as R4-11) dates back to their origin in 2009, but have definitely become more popular over the past year.  They were introduced to be used for the following purpose:
