About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Objective for Today’s Bike Ride: Go 34+ miles

Texbiker.net Posted on July 25, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 25, 2023

The objective for today’s bike ride: ride 34+ miles and reach my 800 mile goal for July. To be sure I added some extra streets on the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route. I started the bike ride at 8:52 AM aboard my Canyon Endurace bike. The temperature was 84 but the humidity was 79% making it feel warmer. Not much wind at 3 mph to add any cooling effect. Sometimes on Tuesday bike rides I see other cyclists and today only 2, one as I reached the east shore of Lake Houston and the other on Kings River Drive on the way back to Kingwood. I finished at 11:45 after biking 36.36 miles and reaching July’s goal. I can now add more miles to July with the remaining days.

The Corps, which manages the recreation at Benbrook Lake, has announced cyclists and pedestrians will need camping reservations to enter South Holiday Park beginning Oct. 1. New Jersey From 2008. Spring Creek and San Jacinto Bayou Greenways. July Repeat.

Texbiker.net Posted on July 24, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 24, 2023

Is a new jersey really new if I bought it in August 2008 but didn’t wear it until today? I think so! Yesterday I retired one Texbiker jersey and pulled out a “new” Texbiker jersey from 2008.

7-24-2023-Texbiker-Jersey-from-Voler-1
7-24-2023-Texbiker-Jersey-from-Voler-1

Today’s bike ride traversed the Spring Creek Greenway to Pundt Park and the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway on the way back. I rode the same greenways 3 weeks earlier which is unusual biking them twice in one month. I should ride them more often. The July 3rd ride went farther to Dennis Johnston Park. Other cyclists passed me today but not as many as July 3rd, probably because of the holiday back then. Biking the greenway affords lots of shade from all of the trees but can reduce the wind. The wind was light so the blocking wasn’t noticeable.

Rolling out at 9:02 AM I should’ve started a little earlier. The Cervelo Caledonia was ready but I moved too slowly. I managed to finish just before 1 PM at 12:58. The sun was hot but the temperature had not reached the maximum for the day. I stopped at Pundt Park for about 10 minutes before heading back to the I-69/US59 trailhead. The granola bar snack helped on the ride back. Because of the heat and longer than usual ride I used my CamelBak for hydration and it had a tiny bit of cool water left at the end.

I needed 78 miles to reach July’s 800 mile goal and today’s 44.34 miles closes in on it, now leaving 34 miles. I plan on biking that far tomorrow.
