About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Switch Out the Wheelset – October 1st Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 1, 2012 by Rick AnkrumApril 20, 2017

I took two days off because of rain on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday evening the wind picked up from the northwest which means some cooler weather moves into the area. This morning when I check my home weather station shortly after 7 AM I saw 62 degrees, about 5 degrees higher than the weather forecast. While I waited for the temperature to go up some I ran some errands. By the time I got finished around 10:30 the temperature rose to 73. The clear blue sky beckoned me to ride even with the 16 mph northwest wind.

I donned a short sleeve jersey and bike shorts to get started at 11:40 but when I walked to the garage for my bike I squeezed the rear tire and di not get the response I wanted; it was soft. I took the wheel off and went out into the sun to look for the culprit but none appeared. Not wanting to lose more time I switched out the Mavic rims for the Bontrager rims, aired up the tires and took off. I don’t ride on the  Bontrager rims very often so I was surprised that the rear cassette start skipping in the third, fourth and fifth gears. Once I got up to sixth gear the skipping stopped so I pedaled much smoother. The Bontrager gearing is lower than the Mavic setup so getting to the same speeds meant that I must use the 9th and 10th cogs. Going into the wind as I rode north kept me going slow until I turned east on FM1314 at Porter. This put with the wind until I turned north on Loop 494. The buildings and trees broke the wind enough that I could speed up some.

When I got to New Caney and turned west on FM1485 for the short distance to US59 I hit the wind straight on. When I turned south on US59 the wind almost became a tailwind and I picked up my speed some. Over the 31.19 mile route I averaged 15.8 mph with a 23.1 mph top speed and 82.9 RPM average cadence. Now that I headed back home the wind mostly came from my back or right rear quarter. Going into Valley Ranch presented a challenge with a headwind for almost a mile but I started going south again and held my speed. I got back home at 1:54 PM with 1:58:46 riding time and 5:28 time stopped.

After eating lunch I examined the rear wheel and found another hole in the tube. I patched the tube, aired up the tire and now I wait to see if the repair fixed the problem. I could not find the cause of the leak though.

By ELISABETH ROSENTHAL            www.nytimes.com
ONE spectacular Sunday in Paris last month, I decided to skip museums and shopping to partake of something even more captivating for an environment reporter: Vélib, arguably the most successful bike-sharing program in the world. In their short lives, Europe’s bike-sharing systems have delivered myriad benefits, notably reducing traffic and its carbon emissions. A number of American cities — including New York, where a bike-sharing program is to open next year — want to replicate…

Rain adds element to grueling Tejas 500 bike race
By John Henry, Special to the Star-Telegram
GLEN ROSE — Ultra cyclists who traveled from around the country and various parts of the world to a remote area of Somervell County this week found more than a grueling course of hills and winding trails during a ride the equivalent of a bicycle trip from Fort Worth to McAllen on the border.

Wind and a continuous driving rain throughout Saturday that swelled the Brazos River was Mother Nature’s hard-hearted contribution that gave competitors an additional dynamic to deal with in…

Moderate rain Saturday afternoon did not stop a group of UTA students and community members from riding around on bicycles in nothing but their underwear.

The group participated in the first annual UNDER(a)WEAR RIDE, a bicycle ride meant to raise money for the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas Foundation.

Ellie Hernandez, Maverick Bike Shop bicycle safety coordinator, said she came up with…

by WB admin            The Wheel Brothers – Cycling in Texas
The Bike for Kids’ Sake invites you to join their ride on October 6, 2012 starting at Wylie High School Parking Lot

We were lucky enough to be granted an interview with Michelle Parrish, BBBS event organizer to ask some questions about their upcoming ride.

Bike For Kids’ Sake will help to raise funds and support the hundreds of Abilene children being supported by Big Brothers Big Sisters. It’s also offers 3 different courses and will feature some very scenic areas of West Texas and Taylor County.

How long has the event been around?
This is the first Bike For Kids’ Sake ever organized!

What was the motivation behind starting the tour and who benefits from it?
We realized that our community does not feature any rides during this time of year, so it seemed like a natural fit for local riders. The event will promote Big Brothers Big Sisters, and help to raise awareness for the mission of…
