Howdy,
My sister came home (Honduras) for her college summer break. I took her out on some light mtbing and she immediately got hooked. By the end of her break, she was handling some pretty tough climbs and even, to their amazement and embarrasment, beating some of my friends. Last week she went back to Austin to start her fall semester at UT. She wants to keep riding and wants to join a local group. Do any of you guys or gals know of a nice group of friendly texan woman (or coed) mtbers in Austin that are willing to welcome a…

What a workday at Lake Georgetown!
Austin Ridge Riders
by LeeC
Jeff’s friend Mike Hamilton brought his John Deere 512 tractor and shredder out. Paul and Roddy joined us from the Sun City Hiking Club.  We met at 9am and finally ate lunch about 2:30.  (we compensated Mike for the diesel and use of the tractor/mower)
Believe me, it took the power of the tractor to cut through the ragweed!  Over 7 feet tall with stalks 2″ at the base. I estimate over 4 miles were cut, and this opened up all the area on the west side of the lake adjacent to Tejas Park.  At least two passes…

Bicycle Commuting This Week – When You’re Hot You’re Hot
by Christopher Curnutt         Biking in Dallas
That’s hot, but not THAT hot.
People North of the Mason Dixon line might not understand that temperatures in the low 90s is actually reasonable for summer bike commuting. I can do low 90s on my way home without complaining too much, then again I have a short commute. No doubt it’s more brutal on those who have a…
Livestrong Texas 4000 adds third route
By Pam LeBlanc         Fit City
Each year for the last nine years, about 50 students from the University of Texas have pedaled bicycles nearly 4,700 miles from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska.
They split into two groups along the way, one chugging through the Rocky Mountains, the other heading up the Sierras. As they head north, they stop in towns to visit with cancer survivors, patients and family members to…
Cycling group to urge bike lanes on Bee Cave Parkway
By Marques G. Harper      www.statesman.com
Lakeway cyclist Tim Diven is all too familiar with the Dam Loop, a popular 40-plus-mile route for cyclists in western Travis County that runs along Capital of Texas Highway (Loop 360) and RM 620.
“The most dangerous portion of it is this little stretch behind the (Hill Country) Galleria,” said Diven, vice president of the Lake Travis Cycling Club. “Every Tuesday we do a bike ride that goes through Lakeway and Bee Cave. There’s no room for us to go. And the cars…

After spending the weekend in Wichita Falls it is back to the normal surroundings. I checked my timing chip results for Saturday riding the 100K route in 4:52:38. Not bad considering the big slowdown the last 15 to 16 miles with the strong wind. Riding with all of the other riders was a big change for me since I usually ride by myself. Today I was back on the road by myself. Traffic was not too bad now that the schools are back in session around here.
The weather shows signs of creeping to fall. While the temperature can still get up to the mid-90’s the intensity is just not the same as in July and early August. When I left home this morning at 10:18 is was 83 degrees (70% humidity) and when I finished at 12:26 it was 92 degrees (49% humidity). Scattered clouds and a light 9 mph NNW breeze complete the scene. Tropical Storm Isaac might impact our weather towards the end of the week with some rain.
The route I chose today took me to New Caney to the north and then back down US59 into Valley Ranch. I typical route does not go south of Kingwood Drive when I go this direction but today I wanted to vary it so I went south to Hamblen Road and into Kingwood through Forest Cove. This route totaled 32.27 miles at 15.6 mph average speed, 22.5 mph max speed and 80.8 RPM average cadence. Riding time was 2:03:55 with 4:25 time stopped. Lately I avoided extended rest stops to cut down on the overall time I was out. Using a CamelBak allows me to carry enough cold water for this length and not make any stops other than for traffic lights.
Mileage for August now stands at 656.91 and YTD shows 4591.87 miles. Tomorrow’s ride will need to be early and about the same length due to other commitments. Se an alternate view of this ride at RideWithGPS.com.
I put together a video from my ride this morning at Leon Creek in San Antonio, Texas. These are some of the highlights. …
Looking for weekend route between Dallas & Austin
by rgilliam2004Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â www.bikeforums.net
Hi All
A friend and I want to complete a shake out tour to prep for a 4 to 5 day tour in Nov. I am trying to find a 30 mile route between camping grounds that is not to technical between Dallas and Austin. The Waco area would be a good spot for example but this is not set in stone.
Not looking for a killer hill ride but something where we can make sure we are ready for a much longer tour. He has completed…
They Also Serve
by Steve AÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â DFW Point-to-Point
My plan all along had been to go ride in the HH100. I’ve ridden it a couple of times before and, this year, the full 100 mile route would include Shepard AFB. But a few things cropped up. I waited too long to get a proper room. No problem – I’d either simply get up REAL early on Saturday morning or camp out the night before. Then, Warren called. You see, there was a Bike Rodeo in Allen on Saturday and Mike needed some help. Conflict had arisen.
I worked one bike rodeo in conjunction with Chandra, documented here. This would be a second opportunity to see the different ways that League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) handle such events. How could I resist. To make a…

Peddler Bike Shop looks to build on Austin’s biking culture
By Brian Gaar         www.statesman.com
If you work at a bicycle shop, summer is the slow season especially in Texas.
As the employees of the Peddler Bike Shop can tell you, it’s too hot for lots of folks to ride.
But business was picking up last week, as college students started to return to the nearby University of Texas campus.
“Everybody’s moving in. This is the big moving week right now,” said Paul Crossley, as he…
Commentary: What to do about the Lance Armstrong Bikeway
By Ken Herman, Austin American-Statesman
AUSTIN, Texas _ The notion popped up in an online forum within moments of the first report that Lance Armstrong would not contest the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s drug allegations against him.
“I wonder what they’ll rename the Lance Armstrong Bikeway to,” said the Thursday night post, referring to the downtown Austin bike route named for arguably the world’s most famous Austinite.
That’s actually the second question to be asked. Here’s the first: Should…
America’s largest bicycle race cooler than hell this year
By: Edward Lane         www.examiner.com
Christina Beuten, who rode with her eight year old daughter KiKi in the largest bike race in America today, said it was the winds more than the heat which presented the biggest challenge in the Hotter N’ Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls, Texas this weekend. The three-day annual race attracted approximately 12,000 cyclists from around the world and all fifty states for the 31st annual version which ended today.
Ms. Beuten said, “The wind was truly horrible! Last 15 miles were straight into strong enough winds to push me around, so I know it was a challenge to her (daughter KiKi)! So proud she kept…
