About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst Riding My Lynskey Helix

Texbiker.net Posted on July 19, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 19, 2023

I managed to get today’s bike ride started before 9 AM but just barely rolling out at 8:58 AM. The heat advisory chain continues and I wanted to finish by noon but I missed that by 4 minutes. Today I rode north to Community Drive, then turned south through Valley Ranch and onto FM 1314. I stayed on FM 1314 to the northwest to Cumberland Blvd. where I made the u-turn and continued back to Old Sorters Road with a brief stop at the Circle K at Sorters Road to top off my water bottle for the 12 miles to the finish. Briar Tree, Oakhurst and Kings Manor got me back into Kingwood. Nothing out of the ordinary during the ride until a Houston Fire truck with lights flashing and siren blaring came towards me on Rockmead Drive. Not sure why the fire truck was taking this route but maybe because of a road closure at Kingwood Drive and Loop 494 due to construction.

Today’s ride followed my Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst route but probably varied a little from streets on the previous rides. I checked the ride map from the June 21st ride to refresh which roads to ride but made a change from Eagle Drive north of TX 99 to Community Drive to Loop 494 and then the TX 99 west bound frontage road back to US59/I-69. From the rides history the most used bike is the Lynskey Helix which I rode today.

Weather conditions: Start 86 degrees, 74% humidity, dew point 76.8, mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph; Finish 94 degrees, 52% humidity, dew point 73.6, a few clouds, wind variable 6 mph. Wind remains light for my bike rides. In the shade it is strong enough to provide some cooling effect.

Video: Wichita Falls cyclist preps to participate in first Hotter’N Hell 100

By Robyn Hearn | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – The annual Hotter’N Hell 100 is over a month away and one local cyclist is getting ready to make her debut.

Bella Anderson has ten weeks and over 500 miles and counting to get ready for the 100 mile race. Anderson said she doesn’t have too many nerves since she’ll be participating with some of her family.

“I’m riding with my father in law and my brother in law,” said Anderson. “My brother in law has done it before so that kind of gives me a little bit of peace. He keeps reminding me that the end goal is finishing. It doesn’t matter how long. It doesn’t matter how many stops. Just enjoying the ride literally is the goal.”

Even with a …

Video: Hotter’N Hell organizers trying to get more kids involved

By Blake Hill | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – The hottest bike ride of the summer is right around the corner, and work to get everything ready is already in full swing.

Organizers of the Hotter’N Hell Hundred said one issue the event is trying to overcome this year is getting kids involved.

Chip Filer, the executive director for HHH says it’s because their regular riders are starting to age out, so four years ago they decided to provide coupons to families that would allow kids 12 and under to participate in 10K endurance ride for free.

“If you look at out demographics, our road cyclists that ride the endurance rides, the groups are getting older year by year by year. Well Robbi says lets start looking at kids for the future of cycling,” Filer said. …

Bike Riders Raise Over $335,000

Lamesa Press Reporter | www.pressreporter.com

It’s been happening every summer since 2013. A horde of out-of-town bicyclists descend into town to raise funds for the battle against multiple sclerosis (MS).The annual Bike MS: Cactus and Crude Ride 2023 brought about 150 bicyclists to town over the weekend. One of their main objectives, besides seeing the sights and raising funds for a cause, was to travel the 75 miles through back roads from Midland to Forrest Park in one day. They continued the following day pedaling another 75 miles of back roads to Lubbock.MS damages myelin, the protective covering around nerves. It causes mobility issues, along …

Fruit Salad Assembly Slowed The Start. Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Route

Texbiker.net Posted on July 18, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 18, 2023

I was slow getting started on today’s bike ride. It took a little longer than I expected to make a fruit salad for my dominoes group that meets tonight. Stage 16 of the Tour de France was on as I ate breakfast until I paused it to watch when I got back. I didn’t expect the results. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike starting at 9:02 AM, the first ride after 9 AM in awhile. The ride went south and east to FM 2100 and turned back to Kingwood generally following my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route. I saw other cyclists with a group of 5 riding west over Lake Houston as I went east. I’ve seen some them on other rides. I was back home at 11:52 AM before the heat ramped up.

7-18-2023 SportTracks 2023 Rides Atascocita-Walden-Huffman

This ride incorporated a few different streets from the usual ones. I rode on more greenbelt trail at the start, took a short northerly loop on Woodland Hills Drive, circled on Rocky Woods in Kings Forest, and rode a loop by the golf course in Kingwood Greens. When I got to FM 2100 I decided to not go south to Spanish Cove Drive because of the extra streets earlier.

Heat continues to bake the Houston area and many parts of Texas. Yesterday evening around 6 PM my home weather station hit 100 degrees. It wasn’t that hot for today’s bike ride but it was in the forecast for later in the day. The spread between the temperature and humidity was 12 when I start which helps some. Weather while I biked: Start 86 degrees, 74% humidity, dew point 76.7, mostly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph; Finish 91 degrees, 59% humidity, dew point 74.3, partly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph. Light wind helped my legs.

Roads Change Over 4 Years, Some Arrive, Some Leave

Texbiker.net Posted on July 17, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 17, 2023

It was a rest day for the tour de France but not for me. For some time I have kicked around biking on the New Caney – Roman Forest – Splendora route. I’m not sure why I waited until today from June 7th, 2019, to ride it, the last time I rode the route. Back then I wrote this post about my ride which might shed some light on the long absence. Maybe it was the dog chase from a ride on Tram Road before June 7th. Today’s bike route mostly followed the June 7th roads but I made a few changes because during that time new roads came along. Leaving Kingwood followed different streets, navigating Tavola was different because the streets I biked today didn’t exist in 2019. I also altered getting to Roman Forest Blvd. from Magnolia Bend. Once I was on Tram Road the roads were the same until the construction area on the US59/I-69 service road at SH 242. To avoid the barriers I walked across broken concrete behind the barriers for about 25 feet to reach an unopened road passing close to Big River Water Park and SH 242 west of US59/I-69. From there the roads were familiar all the way back to Kingwood though not exactly the same ones from June 2019. The 2019 ride was 46.89 miles and today I rode 46.61 miles. There was a time gap between rides prior to June 7th but clumps of rides in 2014, 2013, and 2012. Maybe ones earlier than those years too, before I used a GPS bike computer. My average speeds decreased over the years. I getting old.

7-17-2023 SportTracks Rides History New Caney-Roman Forest-Splendora
7-17-2023 SportTracks Rides History New Caney-Roman Forest-Splendora

To celebrate the bike ride I wore a new jersey with an Egyptian theme. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike but not the same one as 2019. I rolled out at 8:40 AM and finished at 12:40 AM. I stopped under TX 99 on Valley Ranch Parkway to eat a bagel and get out of the sun for a few minutes. I needed the bagel to power me and the rest to refresh my legs.

The wind was modest today, cooling more than hindering me as I went south. The humidity backed off some too. Weather conditions: 85 degrees, 75% humidity, dew point 76.4, a few clouds, wind S 4 mph; Finish 93 degrees, 55% humidity, dew point 74.2, a few clouds, wind W 8 mph.
