About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Thursday Night Social Ride: The Super Soaker
By Keith Byrd
Thursday, August 2, 2012
7:00pm in CDT
Grab your water weapon of choice, leave your Sunday Go-To-Meetin’ clothes at the house and get ready for a H20 combat. After a nice leisurely cruise, we’ll be stopping at an undisclosed location where Social Cycling Austin will have a COUPLE OF THOUSAND WATER BALLOONS filled and ready for you to unload on your fellow Thursday bike friends. Last time we did this they…

Bryan man completes 2,745-mile bike race
745-miles
By Kyrie O’Connor            www.mysanantonio.com
Billy Rice calls the Tour Divide bicycle challenge “the hardest race in the world that nobody knows about,” but that’s rather understating the case. It’s a lot harder than that. Any one day of it is harder than anything you or I will do all year.

The race is 2,745 miles long, from Banff, Alberta, Canada, to Antelope Wells, N.M., on the Mexican border. That’s 200,000 feet of climbing, and it’s almost all off-road, on a patchwork of trails, dirt roads, forest paths and service roads along the Continental Divide. And it’s done in a single stage: no checkpoints, no…

Le Tour de Longneques
bikenoob.com
I broke away from my usual weekend routine Saturday, by getting up really early and heading west to ride in Le Tour de Longneques. The brainchild of my blogging friend Don Bynum, the Tour started a couple of years ago as an easy 18-mile jaunt between Llano and Castell, Texas.

But each time it’s been run, it has grown in popularity. And as cyclists have gotten better, the Tour was extended. It now starts in Castell, (pop. 72) a hamlet along the Llano River, and goes to Llano (pop. 3,300), the county seat, then back to Castell.

What’s the attraction of Castell? The Castell General Store — one of the funkiest local businesses you’ll ever want to see. It appears ready to fall down in…

75 Years Young – Skip, You Da Man!
www.planobicycle.org

Skip Sparry, local Plano hero and all around nicest guy you could ever hope to meet, took away 2 silver medals at  the U.S. National masters track championship in Colorado Springs from the several events he entered. Skip,  a “Rudy Rider,” overcoming years of injuries and an on-going heart condition (his cardiologist: “Don’t race, Skip”) at the age of 75, did all cyclists proud with his outstanding performance. He is clearly placed as…

Wrapping Up the Month – July 31st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 31, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJuly 31, 2012

I wrapped up July’s biking with a 32.27 mile ride today. I got started at 8:45 AM while the temperature was 82 degrees and by the time I finished at 11:24 it increased to 92 degrees. With this ride July mileage ended at 621.55. Scattered clouds and the 9 mph SW breeze made this a typical summer ride. With the early start I did not expect to see any other riders but while I was cooling off at the Huffman Chevron a woman bicyclist cut through the station but she did not see me.

Riding time was 2:07:44 plus 31:08 time stopped. Average speed was 15.2 mph with 21.0 mph max speed. Average cadence was 76.9 RPM. YTD mileage totals 3934.96. I biked 19 days in July with an overall 15.0 mph average speed. Total riding time for July was 41:23:03.

Flagpole Ride – Saturdays
Brazos Valley Cyclists
NB: Due to construction, we are temporarily meeting at the entrance to the small parking lot at Houston St and Old Main, about 30 meters west of the flagpole!

8:45 a.m. at the center flagpole on the main quad of the Texas A&M campus, about 50 meters west of the statue of Sul Ross. This ride consists of two groups going approximately 55 and 45 miles respectively. Both groups ride together from campus for the first nine miles to “Twister’s”, the minimart/gas station at the corner of highways 60 (a.k.a. University Ave closer to town) and 50. After a very short stop at the minimart, the two groups typically separate. Note: We try very hard to be welcoming toward beginners, but the Flagpole ride is not a beginner ride. New riders should know…

4,500 miles for cancer: Bicyclists train, raise money for fundraising trip to Alaska
by Victor R. Martinez \ El Paso Times
Whenever Aurora Mayte Salazar-Ordoñez feels like giving up, she looks no further than her mother, Aurora.

“She is one of the strongest people I know,” Salazar-Ordoñez said, then paused to reflect on what she had just said. “Anytime I want to quit and not do anything else, I just think of her.”

Salazar-Ordoñez is going to need every bit of her mother’s inspiration as she and University of Texas at Austin classmate José Gallegos prepare for a 4,500-mile bike ride from…

Bicycle Sports Shop hosts book release party Wednesday

That means you can still make it to Wednesday’s book release party for Austin writer Ian Dille, whose recently released book, “The Price of Gold: The Toll and Triumph of One Man’s Olympic Dream,” tells the story of Olympic track cycling champion Marty Nothstein’s quest for Olympic gold in 2000. …
