About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texbiker.net Posted on July 13, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJuly 13, 2012

The only thing turning today was paddle boats. Rain ruled the day so no biking. Saturday will be another attempt to get my bike back on the road with only 40% chance of rain.

Fort Worth Continues to Amaze…
by marc            BikeDFW
Fort Worth is the Crown Jewel of bike-friendly cities in North Texas and might soon be giving super bike-friendly Austin a run for its money. We can only hope other North Texas cities eventually implement some of the programs and policies already adopted in Fort Worth. Here are a couple of current city-sponsored programs demonstrating the commitment of city leadership and staff (especially Bike Coordinator Julia McCleeary) to promoting cycling and making Fort Worth a better place to live.

The City of Fort Worth Bike Club (CFWBC) is the city’s official bike club. Anyone interested in being a part of the CFWBC should contact MaryAnn Means of the Mayor’s office at cfwbikeclub@gmail.com. The club will soon…

Harlingen graduate makes 305 mile bike ride for his mom

It’s been a long trek for Kenny Rubio.

“I rode 145 miles yesterday and then got up this morning and get going.”

The former Harlingen Cardinal Football player rode his bicycle from the state capitol, roughly 305 miles, to Harlingen to raise awareness for rheumatoid arthritis after his mom was diagnosed 4 years ago.

“I called my mom a few months ago and said I wanted to do something crazy.”

The journey to his parents barber shop in Harlingen wasn’t…

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for July 12th

Texbiker.net Posted on July 12, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJuly 12, 2012

In southeast Texas the drought left and the rain moved in. No biking for the last two days with all of the rain. Flood watch and alerts now punctuate the weather. Maybe on Friday I can get back on the road.

Buffalo Soldiers National Museum Hosts Annual Ride
BikeTexas.org

A hot and muggy Houston day did not deter the approximately 100 riders who came out for the 3rd Buffalo Soldiers National Museum ride on June 24. The ride is an annual fundraiser for the museum and began at what will be the museum’s new location in a 1920s-era armory on Caroline Street. The armory has been vacant for many years, and the Buffalo Soldier Association says that they feel…

Boulder Park (Dallas)
by DaggerK1            forums.mtbr.com
I was up from Houston for business and took the opportunity to ride at Boulder Park Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. Those are really well made, designed, and fun trails. I especially enjoyed the Cash Extension with the fast dips and climbs. Being a flat-lander some of the climbs on the red trails hurt a bit, but I made it up all of them except a real rooty, steep, off camber climb on C. Huge kudos to DORBA for building and maintaining those trails. A few questions.

I know that’s not the best part of town. Have there been any issues with vehicle break-ins? I parked at the little pullout just across from the trail entrance and had no issue, but I was wondering because…

Texas 4,000 pedals through on way to Alaska to raise funds for cancer
By Matt Naber Bigfork Eagle            www.flatheadnewsgroup.com

The world’s longest annual charity bike ride, the Texas 4,000, spent the night in Ferndale on July 5 while en route from Austin, Tex. to Anchorage, Alaska. Every year for the last nine years students from University of Texas raise a minimum of $4,500 each while pedaling over 4,000 miles through the Rockies or along the Sierra coast while spreading hope for cancer patients and funds for cancer research.

Normally the Rockies team stops in Whitefish, but their usual host family was unavailable this year. Fortunately, Jack Croke of Ferndale is an alumnus of…

My Mt. Bonnell Cycling Adventure….Thanks Toyota
by Darryl            lovingthebike.com
I’m always up for something new and exciting, so when I heard about the Toyota RAV4 Adventure Club event going on at MapMyFitness I decided to take part in it.

There is a contest component to this event, and they are giving away a Tom Tom Go Live to help you navigate your future wild adventures, but I was more interested in making this a chance to try out something different.

The idea behind this contest event is to get people creating new routes in their area (either bike, hike, walk, or run routes) and then sharing them with everyone in the Toyota Group within MapMyFitness. …

Record Year for Educational Materials

The program usually distributes 15,000 to 35,000 materials per month.

During the 2011-2012 school year, the program had two banner months: In October, we distributed 84,534 pieces, and in May, we distributed 81,998, both more than double the amount we send in a normal…

Rain Repellant
by Steve A        DFW Point-to-Point
This week has been a bit odder than usual for July in North Texas. Rain has been in the forecast. I imagine that the rain forecast has partly been prompted by my working on our sprinkler system. While I haven’t washed any of the family cars, that might clinch the deal.

However, I’ve been employing some rain repellant on my daily commute.
A while back, I took a cue from one of my motoring coworkers and stashed some rain gear at work. Since then, I’ve been trying to order up an improved rain jacket, but the outfit, “Department of Goods” via Amazon has pooped…

And So the Commute Begins
by Christopher Curnutt        Biking in Dallas
As , I’ve just started commuting to work on two wheels.  My commute is a relatively short distance, the ride is long enough to where I can feel my heart getting a work out but not so far that I’m dripping in sweat by the time I arrive.

I’m taking neighborhood arterials that are well traveled by fellow cyclists, so most vehicles are accustomed to seeing and sharing the road with folks like me.  As an added bonus the traffic is light on the roads I’m taking, at least at the hour when I’m on them.  Each has two lanes (each way) so cars have an easy time…
