About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Great Springs Project: The plan for a 100-mile San Antonio to Austin trail is moving ahead

Elena Bruess, Wesley Ratko | www.expressnews.com

The Great Springs Project isn’t just a crazy dream. It is actually moving close to becoming a reality, organizers say.

Down past the chapel and the Angel of Hope statue along the University of the Incarnate Word’s campus, the beginnings of the San Antonio River bubble to the surface from San Antonio Springs.

The spring — better known as the Blue Hole — is surrounded by a 53-acre woodland area and a network of walking trails that meander through Live Oak trees, eventually bringing hikers and bikers back to where they started.

But what if you could stay on the trail and, Forrest Gump-style, just keep walking all the way to Austin, without ever needing to leave the trail system? …

Weekend volunteers sweep through freshly reopened Chartres Street bike trail for cleanup

Peter Breen | www.houstonchronicle.com

Outfitted with brooms, dustpans, work gloves, trash bags and electric leaf blowers, a few dozen volunteers spent Saturday morning cleaning a bike trail near Chartres Street in downtown Houston.

Volunteers swept the short stretch of multimodel lane beneath Interstate 69 clean within a couple of hours. The city reopened the trail, which was fenced off prior to the pandemic because of a large homeless encampment, on June 22, according to Marika Mohr with BikeHouston. …

Public meeting planned regarding TxDOT plans to widen FM-1179

By Morgan Riddell | www.kbtx.com

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – TxDOT is holding a public information meeting Thursday, July 27 regarding work planned for FM-1179.

This project could impact residents traveling between Boonville Road and Easterling Drive. TxDOT plans to have designs to show residents at the meeting and will be available for questions.

According to the TxDOT Bryan District leaders, this project is in the planning stages and the goal is to widen FM-1179.

“The proposed improvements would widen the existing two-lane roadway to a four-lane roadway, two lanes in each direction separated by a raised median with dedicated left turn lanes at selected intersections. The project would also construct roundabouts at the Coyote Run Road and Merka Road / Steep Hollow Road intersections, as well as provide pedestrian and bicycle accommodations along the project corridor. …

Other Cyclists, 220 Mile Week Biking Atascocita – Huffman – Walden

Texbiker.net Posted on July 15, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 15, 2023

I look forward to Saturday bike rides with the potential to see other cyclists. The best route for that is my Atascocita – Huffman – Walden. I rode that route today starting at 7:47 AM. Starting about an hour earlier than most rides this week it was very humid but just 80 degrees. At the 10:28 AM finish the temperature had not hit 90 yet but the humidity dropped to 69%. During the ride I saw other cyclists but didn’t get all of them in the video. Weather conditions: Start 82 degrees, 89% humidity, dew point 77.9, mostly cloudy, wind S 4 mph; Finish 87 degrees, 69% humidity, dew point 75.6, mostly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. That 7 mph wind seemed stronger biking west over Lake Houston. Today’s 34.18 miles made it a 219.84 mile week. This is the 6th week in a row at 200+ miles. July miles total 486.74 towards my 800 mile goal, 61% of the goal.

Citywide trail feasibility study begins in Katy

By Asia Armour | communityimpact.com

As one of the major components of the parks, recreation and trails master plan, Katy officials have begun planning a walkable, bikeable trail system that will weave through the entire city.

The details

At a June 26 meeting, City Council members approved Phase 1 of a trail feasibility study to connect neighborhoods with parks and other activity centers within the city, costing $14,930. The trail or series of trails would wind from Leyendecker Landing—a passive park dedicated to the city’s former engineer and located north near Pitts and Morton roads—to Avenue C and Third Street in the downtown area of Katy.

The city will use its 2021 park improvement bonds to pay for the feasibility study, per the …

City buys parkland for $10

By Kevin Limiti | kdhnews.com

The Killeen City Council this week approved 5-0 to purchase 1.3 acres for a greenway trail that is intended to run through a recently rezoned property that is dedicated for retail use.

The land is located to the east of East Trimmier Road and north of Andalucia Lane in south Killeen.

According to the deed, the land was purchased by the city of Killeen for a grand total of $10. The council approved the purchase at Tuesday’s council meeting.

The point of the greenway trail, via the city of Killeen’s presentation on the resolution, is to connect to the Purser Family Hike and Bike Trail to the east and site of the future Preserve at Thousand Oaks to the west, of which there was no information on Thursday. …
