Nothing dramatic about today’s ride. Overcast skies, a light variable 6 mph breeze, 89 degrees with 60% humidity. The road work on the causeway over Lake Houston on FM1960 moved to the east half so progress to the August finish date looks good. I need to ride in the west shoulder longer now until they move the barriers where they are finished.
Riding through the Bank of America parking lot I rounded a corner and greeted another biker coming towards me. We exchanged hellos.
Today I lengthened my typical Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route to 32.57 miles. Even with a higher humidity I hit 15.6 mph average speed with a 21.3 mph max speed and 79.9 RPM cadence. Mileage standings: 64.51 miles this week and July, 3377.93 miles YTD.
Community Bike Shop Leaders Gather to Swap Stories and Celebrate Success
via Alliance for Biking & Walking: People Powered Blog
Two weekends ago, leaders from community bike shops across North America gathered in Vancouver for the 9th annual Bike!Bike! conference, and I was fortunate enough to attend on behalf of the Alliance. The conference was held over four days and featured workshops of a variety of topics related to community bike shops, ranging from demystifying disk brakes to discussing the best ways to manage the financial side of a shop.
The conference brought together over 150 community bike shop volunteers and staff, with about half from Canada and half from the USA, as well as five leaders from Mexico. Along with 35 scheduled workshops and a handful of “pop-up†workshops, there was also plenty of…

Dallas’ Newest Bike Commuter – Me

Where the heck was my helmet?
The distance for me was not too great, but the time I would have to dedicate made it unrealistic. Amongst other challenges, I’d miss dinner time with my family. But things changed…
Marines pass through Texas in cross-country bike ride to benefit wounded soldiers
by Kevin Reece / KHOU 11 News (Video)
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas—Four men on recumbent cycles toiled through the Texas heat in Liberty and Montgomery counties on Friday on the third week of a cross-country trip to raise money for injured U.S. service men and women.
And among the cyclists was an injured Marine, cycling without the legs he already gave to his country in Afghanistan.
“One of the guys behind me stepped on a pressure plate, activated the…

Recent Study Takes Aim at Mountain Bike Injuries
www.sfgate.com
In the last 30 years, the sport of mountain biking has soared exponentially in popularity. It is estimated that in 2009 38 million Americans regularly took part in the sport, sometimes called “free-riding,†where the rider navigates steep slopes and technical terrain.
In a study published in the latest issue of Wilderness & Environmental Medicine (http://www.wemjournal.org), Ashwell, et al, investigated 898 cases of mountain bike park cyclist who presented to the Whistler Health Clinic in Whister, British Columbia, during a 5-month period. Eight-six percent of those injured were male. And, although the majority of patient injuries were rated as mild to moderate in severity, 12.3% of riders experienced injuries that were considered potentially threatening to life, limb, or function…

Congrats @ATXCyclingTeam Cat 3 women on the state Team TT win & to all the other members of the club for their great rides at states!
After two days of sporadic rain I got back on the road this morning. The rain lowered the temperature but not the humidity. Scattered clouds, 91 degrees (at the end), 9.2 mph SSE breeze awaited when I started my ride this morning at 9:41 AM. When I took the picture of my home weather station panel before I left the humidity showed 82% so I figured I would be dripping but when I got out on the road perspiration was not a real big problem.
I added a couple of new wrinkles to my route riding north on Loop 494 before moving over to the US59 north bound service road. Once I got to FM1314 I turned east back to Loop 494. I started riding Loop 494 north lately since there is a nice shoulder. When I got to Michael Lane I turned right to go through the area I used to live. I wondered if there would be a dog problem since the roads go past many rural homes where dog owners don’t always fence their dogs. Many years ago I got nipped by a tiny dog that chased me and I stopped when the owner said he didn’t bite. That was a big mistake. Several dogs barked at me but none ran out to chase me today. These extra streets added a mile or so to my route which totaled 31.94 miles. The two days off probably helped me get my average speed up to 15.7 mph with 22.6 mph max speed. Average cadence came in at 79.8 RPM. Since this is the first ride of July the only mileage to report is the YTD at 3,346.36 miles.
Before leaving on the ride I watched the Tour de France live on my Atrix 4G cell phone docked in a lapdock. I do not enjoy the NBCSports coverage with all of the side stuff so I watch the British EuroSport channel. I stopped watching around the 50K to go point and will resume with a recorded version from NBCSports so I can skipped all of the commercials and boring interviews.
This first article has nothing to do with Texas biking but I couldn’t ignore this from my home town where it is much hillier than southeast Texas. From a small rural town in southeast Ohio Ms. Gandolf rides in a big event.

Zanesville resident Rae Gandolf excelling in Downhill Mountain Biking
Written by Brandon Hannahs, Staff Writer      www.zanesvilletimesrecorder.com
ZANESVILLE — Obstacles, endurance and speed can challenge the most experienced mountain biker.
Rae Gandolf faces a more daunting task when those elements are combined with a downhill track.
“Downhill is the adrenaline-seeking side of the sport,” said Gandolf, who has lived in Zanesville for 12 years. “There are big jumps, rock gardens and gnarly roots and muddy, slick courses. Every course requires skill, timing, power and…
