About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycling Daily News Roundup for June 1st

Call For 2012 Race Promoters
texascx.com
Sand. Technical features. Demanding terrain.
Quick results. Toilet paper.
Heckling. Beer!

Quality experiences bring racers to the battle, and unless you were living in a cave, you likely read the whole story in the Texas CX 2011 Rider Survey. Racers have serious expectations, and it’s time to get it on.

“Promoter gets to be a TSA member for the day.” Glamor shot jacked from Bikesport Challenge Facebook (click image to like the race page).

Submit your cyclocross race proposal before June 15th, 2012

The promoters in Texas deserve a solid high-five for all they do. Super slim margins (if not losses) and municipal headaches rank up near the top. So does pressure from racers, TXBRA and…

Bike Month Wrapup
by Steve A            Dallas Point-to-Point
I had fun this bike month. Like most any other month of commuting by bike. However, I did,set a minor milestone that advocates might point out as a measure of how bike month is working for all of us.
Checking my log records, I noticed that I commuted more times this May than ever before. I rode to work 22 times in May, eclipsing the previous high of 21 times in May 2011. Bike commuting is UP! By my…

Urban forester pedals for tree research dollars

McALLEN  –  Salvador Alemany commutes from his home in McAllen to his office in Weslaco and back.

Not a big deal, but Alemany does it on a bicycle. And he takes the long way home, pedaling some 60 miles per day, four days a week.

He’s been doing it for three years, ever since he began his job at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Weslaco as an urban forester with the Texas Forest Service.

“I do it for several reasons,” said Alemany, a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico. “First, because we only had one car and my…

Q-C cyclist tackles 4,500-mile ride for cancer research

As a May graduate of the University of Texas, De La Cruz will, beginning tomorrow, bike 4,500 miles from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska. It’s the seventh year of the Texas 4000 for Cancer event, and De La Cruz is front and center as part of the program.

Founded in 2004, the Texas 4000 is comprised of university students who tackle the longest annual charity bike ride in the world. Along the route — which winds among nine states and two…

Local man to cycle 2,147 miles for father
By Monica S. Nagy        www.aggiesports.com

Before Chris Hunter’s father succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 2009, he repeatedly asked his son to do something to rid the world of the often-fatal disease. “My dad asked me several times — it’s a heavy thing,” Hunter said. “God pushed me toward this. My dad pushed me toward this.”

Three years later, Hunter will fulfill his father’s request by hopping on his GT Series 4 road bicycle at 8 a.m. Saturday and making a monthlong trek to raise money for cancer research. One hundred percent of the donations will go to Lance Armstrong’s LIVESTRONG, Johns Hopkins, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and…

By Julie Chang        www.beaumontenterprise.com
An estimated 700 bike riders are set to hit the streets of Beaumont for the 7th annual Spindletop SPIN fundraiser.

No road closures are expected, but SPIN organizers say that drivers should expect to see lanes sequestered off for riders.

The race starts as early as 7 a.m. and the majority of riders finish up by early afternoon, according to organizers. “It’s the most riders we’ve ever had,” said Bonnie Dean of the Jefferson County Bar Association, which…

Caught in Crowds – June 1st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 1, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJune 1, 2012

My timing and route selection today was not the greatest. I left heading south at 10:01 AM which I figured would be early enough to get past Kingwood High school before they let out for the last day of school. I got there as every parent and student with a car exited the school. Between the cars and teenagers walking on the sidewalk along Kingwood Drive it took me about 10 minutes it seemed to go 1/2 mile. Once I got past the crowd I moved right along.

Thanks to the small cool front and the rain passing through yesterday the sky turned clear blue and the temperature range fell to 78 (start), 89 (finish) and the humidity dropped to 33% when I finished. Moving through the air felt very pleasant and sweat almost evaporated as fast as it formed. A light variable wind escorted me along the 31.4 mile route to Huffman and back.

Average speed clocked in at 15.5 mph but with the traffic at the high school my first 5 mile leg took 23 minutes putting me behind by 3 minutes to get to the 15 mph average. I did manage a 25.3 mph top speed but my average cadence only made it to 77.7 RPM.

When I got to the Huffman Chevron station it felt so good sitting under the fuel canopy with the light breeze I slowly drank my Diet Pepsi and ate my Kashi Trail Mix bar. After resting I got back on the bike to finish the ride. I geared down to a smaller rear gear and cranked up the speed some heading back home. All went well until I turned onto W. Lake Houston Parkway and started riding north. As I approached the slight hump in the bridge I could see a police car and ambulance blocking the road two streets past the end of the bridge with traffic stopped and slowing. I rode on the shoulder but I needed to go around two cars parked there. When I got back on the shoulder on my left in the far lane traffic stopped. All of a sudden I saw an Aramark Uniform delivery van slamming on the brakes, tires squealing as it ran into the little blue car in front of it. The little blue car’s back end got crumpled badly and the rear window shattered. I moved up the shoulder and I could see in my mirror the two of them pulled over onto the shoulder. I slowly worked my way through the traffic and turned into a side street to get around the police car and ambulance.

A little further on at Town Center a crowd of teenagers gathered in the park and surrounding streets and restaurants probably celebrating the end of school. I saw several police cars here as well keeping an eye on the activities. It took longer than usual to ride through all of the traffic here. So my riding time of 2:01:51 and stopped time of 48:25 reflect all of these things.

With the new month the monthly mileage counter resets but this week now totals 155.04 miles and YTD 2821.78 miles. Link to Ridewithgps.com data.

2012 Viva Streets Festival Recap
Author: Ray Garza            RGV Cycling
Austin has their first ever Viva Streets Festival and I decided to take a quick road trip to check it out. I also to my bike I could take a spin around town. I always wanted to go cycling there and this was a good opportunity to do so. Mark Pena and his family also went so we represented Ciclistas Urbanos over there.

My plan was to take off on Friday and come back on Monday. The event itself is on a Sunday so I had plenty of time to check things out. Friday afternoon I decided to go out to South Congress ave and see what’s going on. Oh man, what a happening place that place is. Besides all the people there, that area is so bike friendly. The format is…

Veterans riding from ‘Sea to Shining Sea’
By Ross Farrow/News-Sentinel Staff Writer
Lodi seems to be one of the favorite locales to “pass through” town for cross country trips.

During the past few years, a young man went through Lodi to collect advice from common folks to present to Barack Obama before he was elected president. Another time, a donkey and his owner traveled through Galt, Woodbridge and Lodi on their way from Washington to Texas. In 2008, a group of American Indians walked through Lodi on a cross-country trip to commemorate the 30th anniversary of The…

‘Green lanes’ mean ‘go’ for more cities’ cyclists
By Wendy Koch, USA TODAY
To boost transit options, U.S. cities are revving up plans for something that’s long been popular in Europe — bike lanes protected from traffic.

“Green lanes” are protected bike lanes that are separated by curbs, planters, posts or parked cars.

Separated by curbs, planters, posts or parked cars, these “green lanes” are taking off in — among other cities — Austin, Chicago, Memphis, San Francisco, Portland, Ore., and Washington, D.C.

“We are seeing an explosion of interest in making bicycling stress-free on busy city streets,” says Martha Roskowski of Bikes Belong Foundation, a non-profit touting the paths via its Green Lane Project. She says…
