About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

My plan for 2012 organized rides…Austin area…
by: chiefDave        www.bikeforums.net
Nice list!
My wife and I rode many of the same events this year, and some last.

Rosedale was very foggy and no bib numbers, just sticker. They fell off by the 1st rest stop, and there was almost no photos due to fog. Nice course, pretty flat and very calm. Great SAG and rest stops and all the road crew at the turns where in PJs! Very cool.

I signed up for a century @ Red Poppy, but stayed home due to the wind that am. Was 25MPh at my house, so stayed local and got in 40ish in the winds and…

SS gearing for Anthills?

What gearing do you SS’ers prefer for the Anthills in Houston?

by deathphoenix99
On my 18 speed, I normally leave the front sprocket on the middle ratio and the rear on 2 with hills and 5 when it’s flat and I need speed. I don’t know the ratios off hand, but I can check that out tonight. …

Houston Riders: What tires are you using?
by amgine            forums.mtbr.com
Since the trails are drying out (mostly) and getting loose, what’s the best tire? I’m running the Forte Pisgah 2.1 in the back on the FS bike (really underrated tire) and I’ve tried the WTB Stout and another Pisgah up front. I keep losing traction in the sand at Memorial with either front tire, especially on…

The Nacogdoches Bicycle Club
This overlook is located 9.0 miles east of Nacogdoches on Highway 7. The highway has smooth wide shoulders in both directions and a nice climb to the overlook.  There are no restrooms or water fountains just a fabulous view.  It’s one of our club’s favorite rides.

Abilene (Texas) Officers Ride for Those Who Died
Five officers join Unity Bike Tour to D.C.
Greg Kendall-Ball, Abilene Reporter-News
ABILENE, Texas — Before the sun came up Sunday, a pair of Abilene Police Department officers pulled out of Abilene — headed for the East Coast. It’s hard to say which will cause the most hindquarters discomfort in the coming days: the 1,700-mile road trip from Abilene to New Jersey or the 300-mile bike ride from New Jersey to the nation’s capital to follow.

Officers Carye Adkins and Joshua Ward left at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, hauling a trailer with bicycles and other equipment on their way to participate in the 2012 Police Unity Tour bicycle ride. The trek – featuring…

Biking or walking to work reduces risk of future wrist fractures in women
by Carly Syms            news.medill.northwestern.edu
Chicago women may have extra motivation for ditching their CTA passes and dusting off their bicycles. New research suggests middle-aged women who actively commute to work today significantly reduce their risk of wrist fractures later in life.

The study, published in Osteoporosis International, defines active commuting as regularly biking or walking to work, and found that while the risk of present-day wrist fractures is higher among active commuters than…

Your Commute Could Be Making You Fat–Maybe It’s Time To Bike To Work
by Hanna Brooks Olsen        blisstree.com

There have been a litany of studies which indicate that a long, stressful commute can be bad for your health–including a new one, released this month in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, which notes that adults with longer commutes tend to weight more, have higher blood pressure, and have more dangerous belly fat. Good thing May is Bike Month, and this Thursday is Bike to Work Day, eh?

According to the study, which looked at 4,200 commuters in two different Texas cities, commuters who travel further than 15 miles (which takes about 45 minutes to an hour to do on a bike) and spend a lot of time in traffic are more likely to be obese, and more likely to carry their…

Hey! My name is Erik and I am new in Texas. I lived in the Rio Grande Valley for 3 years. Real nice trail in Brownsville and a good one in Mission. I am now living in Bryan/College Station and only have one place to ride – Lake Bryan. I am looking for someone to ride with in Houston and other locations in the area. I know there are good trails in Smithville, Warda and Waco, but have not been to them yet. It is…

Bike Month is a Great Month
by djcurtin            It’s Time To Ride!
May is a great month for Bike Month. The weather is fairly consistently nice in Austin and people seem open to the idea of getting outside for some good exercise and having fun. Bike Month also means that many folks take on riding for transportation as well. Some recommit themselves to going by bike, while others undertake it for the first time, or for the first time in a long time.

Bike Month focuses on riding as part of your daily life. Cycling as a legitimate means of daily transportation is not generally accepted in the states as it is in some European countries. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t be done and that there aren’t efforts under way to make going by bike more practical here in the capital city.

Take for example this recent message we recently received: …

BikeHouston
BikeHouston was representin’ today before City Council in support of Complete Streets! As part of the Complete Streets Coalition, I (Matt W) talked Mayor Parker and City Council about the need for streets with bike lanes, sidewalks, and handicap access. The city will be tearing up the streets, implementing the Renew Houston plan, replacing storm drains and improving drainage. We want to make sure that when they do, they put the streets back together with proper accommodations for bikes and pedestrians. Specifically, we are asking for the Public Works Engineering Handbook to…

10 MPH Breeze Brought a Coolness – May 8th Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 8, 2012 by Rick AnkrumMay 8, 2012

My second edition patch work from yesterday’s ride held through the night and all of today’s ride. So I can pronounce my patch as successful. Because I prefer to not miss biking I ordered some addition patch kits, tubes and two more Continental GatorSkin tires. The glass shard that caused the flat could have made a cut rendering the tire as unusable and put me off my bike until I found a replacement.

During the night it looked like a rain front would move through our area but when I got up this morning the ground showed no signs of rain. Some places must have got wet just by the size an intensity of the line of rain. We need rain but if it did not make it I will take the opportunity to bike. I started the ride at 10:48 AM (while I wrote this the electricity went off for 1 hour and 45 minutes) and the north 10 mph breeze brought a coolness to the 81 degrees and this lingered throughout the ride. Even at the end with 87 degrees it did not feel that warm. The mostly cloudy sky accompanied me during the ride.

This coolness might been the reason I averaged 15.6 mph over the 31.92 mile route through Atascocita, Walden at Lake Houston and on to Huffman. My riding time of 2:03:08 returned to normal without any flats. Total time stopped came in at 23:08 with most of that at the Huffman Chevron eating my Kashi bar and Diet Pepsi. I did see several other bikers over the course which I consider unusual being a Tuesday around the middle of the day. I guess other people get time off from their other activities.

In order to get that average speed the table below shows the distances I spent at various speed levels. The 24.73 miles at 17.4 mph or more helped. This is 77.4% of the miles covered today. May miles: 228.61, this week miles: 62.95, year to date miles: 2164.27.

Casey Sparks, 1978 – 2012
by bikedenton
On the night of April 27th, Casey Sparks was riding home from the Denton Arts & Jazz fest when he had a solo bicycle accident on Locust, near the North Branch Library. He passed away six days later on May 3rd. The police did not file a report, and the accident details are a bit vague, so I’m waiting to hear back from the Fire Department.

This tragedy marks the first bicycle-related loss in Denton since 2005. …

I Bike Richardson – Warren Casteel
by dickdavidz        Bike Friendly Richardson
It’s time for another installment of the I Bike Richardson series, where we put a face on Richardson cyclists. We’d like to introduce our friend and BikeDFW advocate Warren Casteel. He took the time to answer a few questions about biking. Enjoy:

How long have you been riding?
I biked as a kid, doing paper routes, etc. It was my primary transportation. Then I biked in college for the first two (2) years out of necessity. Upon turning 40 I decided I needed some exercise. I have been seriously biking for the…

2012 Food Revolution Ride
by Ray Garza        Ciclistas Urbanos

This weeks ride was done a little differently. Normally, we meet for breakfast then ride on out. This time, we gathered at the Echo Hotel Cafe parking lot, then headed out to the restaurant to eat. We picked Kolache Factory in McAllen as the eatery to snack at. It was a good turnout with about ten riders. A few didn’t show up as planned but that’s ok.

This is April and that means an abundance of wind to test the legs of the several beginners on the ride. Along the way, Ray was coaching several riders on using the gears on their bikes. This helped the group move a little faster…

Commute Tracker Comparison

At Least Tryparkingit Supports Its Site
I’ve kept a log of my bike commuting since May, 2008. Four years ago last weekend. It has come in handy for purposes of spotting trends and also in helping me keep up with bike maintenance. I keep it in an Excel format that was derived from the “tryparkingit.com” website that is maintained by the North Central Texas Council of Governments.

On a number of occasions in the past, I’ve noted that the site has some shortcomings, such as here. Other posters have been less generous. However, the site does work consistently – like ALWAYS – and it has saved every bit of data I’ve ever input into it. Right now, it is one of two commute log sites listed in my sidebar. I’d…

Double Patched – May 7th Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 7, 2012 by Rick AnkrumMay 7, 2012

My early start fell by the wayside today because I went to church to solve a problem with the library computers. My efforts failed and time passed quickly. After getting back home and eating lunch I got started on the ride at 1:17 PM. My route went near the church again and while riding I thought of a possible solution so I stopped for about 20 minutes to try again but still could not resolve the problem. Back on the bike I continued north to New Caney and the turn back to home. Even though the temperature was around 91 degrees it did not feel that hot with the wind blowing (13 mph with 17 mph gusts from the SE) and the humidity around 50%. For a change I did not pour perspiration when I stopped. The mostly cloudy sky helped me feel cool.

Even with the unplanned stop the ride moved right along and after refilling my waterbottle in New Caney I headed south on US59 service road. I did not get very far though when I ran over some glass and a flat rear tire stopped me. The glass stuck out of the side of the tire so I patched it without removing the tire and just pulling enough tube out to expose the hole. The patch went on and I aired the tube up but it did not last long. The patch did not hold and the tire went flat again. I think the patch and the cement were not compatible. Not sure of the problem I walked about 1/2 a mile back to the Chevron station and re-patched the tire. This I used a different type of patch and it held firm. I pumped up the tire and hit the road again.

So today’s 31.03 mile route took about the same riding time (2:04:59) but the time stopped shot up to 1:11:55. I got back home at 4:34 PM. MY average speed dropped to 14.9 mph and my max speed settled at 22.9 mph with average cadence of 79.1 RPM. May miles total 196.68 and year to date miles are 2132.35.
