About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Move It: Make Friday green by walking or rolling to work
By Jessica Belasco            www.mysanantonio.com

What does calling out “backwards” mean?
by CajunJamie        forums.mtbr.com
I am new to the off-road trails and have been riding Rowlett Creek Preserve up here near Dallas, almost every day for the last week now.

One day while passing riders who had stopped, I turned on a trail and someone shouted, “wrong way!” to me, so I said thanks, then turned and went the other way. I understood that.

Yesterday I go on a loop, and about 1/4 mile in a group of 6-7 riders come around a corner and call out to me, “backward!” I ask, “which…

After a vacation in Denver during which I spent an afternoon cycling on the Greenway Trail along the South Platte River, I realized how much I missed cycling (even after nearly dying of fright riding through downtown on a borrowed bike sans gears or hand brakes). It’s time to haul my bike out of my storage unit, pump up the tires and hit the trail.

Luckily, May is National Bike Month, so there’s a ton of events going on around town. Some highlights: …

Hundreds of cyclists ride in unison for safety on roads

A Touch of Celebrity – May 4th Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 4, 2012 by Rick AnkrumMay 4, 2012

I wanted to get started early today but I did not get out of the driveway until 10:14. The timing turned out to be good. Later on as I biked north on the US59 service road and stopped at the North Park Drive traffic light I experienced a touch of celebrity. As I stood waiting for the light to change a car pulled up on my right preparing to turn right onto North Park. The driver put his window down and asked how far I planned on riding today. I said that I expected to bike 30 to 32 miles. He then looked at me and asked if I was Texbiker. This took me by surprise as I think I live out of any spotlight. When the light changed he drove off. Sometimes I wear my Texbiker.net jersey but not today so this man must know of me by either visiting the website or maybe seeing me biking with my jersey on. I am not sure how he knew but wearing sunglasses today did not maintain my cover.

Otherwise the ride went as planned. The weather accommodated my biking with scattered clouds, a light breeze from the north, 82 to 87 degree temperature and 57% humidity. The humidity probably causes the most problems because when I stop the perspiration pours off my arms and head. Sometimes while biking I will dip my chin down on my right side and I see many drops fall to the ground. When I stopped at the Chevron station in New Caney to refill my waterbottle I used several paper towels to soak up the sweat and the blow dryer in the restroom provided a short relief but not for long once I headed north on FM1485 the sweat came back. Later on I stopped at the Valero station on FM1314 to repeat the process except their restroom does not have a blow dryer. It did have industrial wiping towels because the towel dispenser was empty. The little rubber-like pieces in the paper made wiping the sweat more difficult.

So far May riding is going well riding each of the 4 days. Today I rode 35.2 miles in 2:17:02. Top speed hit 20.2 mph which does not seem to support my 15.4 mph average speed. Average cadence dropped from yesterday to 80.2 RPM. May miles stand at 128.91. Miles this week includes one day from April and total 159.09. Year to date I biked 2064.58 miles. I thought my average speed would be higher since I rode at 17.2 mph for 25.47 miles. The table below shows the breakdown speeds and the distance.

A day spent behind the scenes with George W. Bush: “No big handlers guiding every shot – just the President and slow-cooked ribs”
piersmorgan.blogs.cnn.com
Editor’s Note: Julie Zann, a “Piers Morgan Tonight” editorial producer, shares her behind the scenes insight and impressions of her time spent at the Warrior 100.

I’ve just returned from the W100k in the Texas panhandle, George W. Bush’s 2nd annual 100 kilometer mountain bike ride with 20 Wounded Warriors. As someone in this business for nearly 10 years, I admit that I often get jaded from working behind the scenes. The unfortunate reality is that in the modern age of news and politics, everybody’s getting a little more trained, a little more polished when it comes to dealing with the media; it makes getting authentic moments all the more difficult. So you can imagine my surprise this weekend when we were…

Texas Baptist volunteers ‘Bike Out Hunger’
By Texas Baptist Communications Staff

PRIDDY—The heat and hills faded from the cyclists’ minds when they rolled into Priddy, a Mills County community southeast of Brownwood. What they saw made their six-day, 430-mile trek from San Antonio to Dallas through the heart of the state’s Hill Country worthwhile.

All the Priddy ISD students—elementary school through high school—lined the side of the school parking lot, many holding signs thanking the cyclists for riding to raise money to help hungry people through the Texas Baptist Offering for World Hunger. Of the 107 students in…

To Feed Tarrent County 2012, Fort Worth, Texas
BICYCLE-STUFF REVIEWS
For an inaugural event, I thought it was very well organized. There was plenty of parking at the start / finish. I registered the day of the ride and that went smoothly. Rest stops were stocked. Volunteers were friendly and helpful. The meal at the end of the ride was good. The Fort Worth Police department was at all the intersections. They were everywhere. There were several officers riding as well. Had to ride further out to get away from the “city traffic” then with other rides I have attended. I will ride next year.

1st year for Ryder Ride – To Feed Tarrant County. Always a little apprehensive about a first time ride, but the organizers did a very good job. Probably 100 riders for the 39 mile route, which I rode. Pre-registered online, tried to pick up the packet the next day but the bike shop said they didn’t have it. The web-site said if you pre-registered online packets could be picked up, probably need to clarify this if there is a time lag to get the packets to the bike shop. On-site packet pickup was quick and easy. Plenty of porta potties, there…

My 100 kilometer mountain bike ride with President Bush and 20 wounded warriors
By Dr. Marc Siegel        FoxNews.com
Last week, I traveled to Palo Duro Canyon State Park, just outside of Armarillo, Texas to ride in a 100 kilometer mountain bike ride with former President George W. Bush and 20 severely wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns.

When he was in the White House the former president wasn’t treated fairly by the news media. But up close and personal, I found the former president’s likability to be through the roof.

Mano a mano, he was relaxed, witty and wise. After the first day’s ride, for example, he urged the other bikers on by joking, “I’m on Medicare, and…

Not the only one – May 3rd Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 3, 2012 by Rick AnkrumMay 3, 2012

I got an earlier start today leaving at 9:34AM. Thursday morning vehicle traffic was light so I altered my route slightly and stayed on W. Lake Houston Parkway until I turned left on Aerobic Ave. and into Walden on Lake Houston. This fit my time better because I wanted to get back home by 11:45AM. Today’s route ended up being about 2 miles shorter than another route along many of the same streets. So I biked 30.4 miles and finished at 11:39 right on schedule. May miles now total 93.71 and year to date I crossed the 2000 mark and now total 2029.38 miles.

At the start the humidity was 77% but the air felt cool while I warmed up. Once I got further into the ride the sweat started to roll off the body but as long as I kept moving it was not too bad. Stopping a traffic light or traffic caused a wet spot on the pavement as the sweat ran off my arms. When I stopped to to refill my waterbottle in Huffman I used about 8 paper towels to soak up the perspiration on my head, gloves and arms. After a short break the moisture reappeared when I headed west on FM1960 even going into the light breeze. Temperature ranged from 77 to 86 degrees at the end under scattered clouds with a south 6 mph breeze.

For a change I wasn’t the only biker out today. As I started east over Lake Houston on FM1960 a paceline of 4 bikers were nearing the western end of the causeway heading west. This group passed me on other rides, usually on Atascocita Shores Drive. They set a strong pace. Today I averaged 15.7 mph with a 23.2 mph max speed and a 82.3 RPM average cadence. All three of these numbers improved over my usual numbers. Riding time totaled 1:56:18 with 8:50 stopped time. The 5 mile splits shows that I kept my speed up over the whole ride.
