About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Colorado Bend State Park Camping Trip, April 20-22, 2012
by msrarkitex            Brazos Valley Mountain Bike Association
Great weekend. (period)

One truck arrived at CBSP around 4:00 on Friday to check-in and get the lay of the land.  Parked the truck, loaded three bikes and two bob trailers, then headed off for a 1.1 mile ride to find the Windmill primitive camp site.  After a bumpy ride, we located the meadow with big clusters of oak trees and found a spot to call home for…

MoPac lane expansion may get $130M infusion
by Sara Behunek            impactnews.com
Policymakers are in negotiations with the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority to bankroll more than half of a $200 million two-lane expansion on MoPac between Parmer Lane and Cesar Chavez Street.

But as part of the arrangement—and at the urging of a local bicycle advocacy group—project designers may go back to the drawing board to extend a proposed bicycle and pedestrian path that would run adjacent to the highway—an addition with a $23 million price tag.

As is, the Mobility Authority, an independent government agency formed as a partnership between Travis and Williamson counties, has allocated $5 million to building a 10-foot-wide concrete trail that would run alongside parts of the…

Day 1 of George W. Bush’s Warrior 100K Ride sees fast trails, early triumphs
By Tom Benning / Reporter        trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com
AMARILLO — Former President George W. Bush let the final notes of the “Star-Spangled Banner” hang in the air for just a couple seconds before turning to his mountain bike.

“All right, let’s ride,” he said Thursday afternoon, officially kicking off the Bush Institute’s Warrior 100K Ride in Palo Duro Canyon State Park, near Amarillo.

Bush — whose bike sported his presidential number, 43 — then took off down the trail, leading 19 wounded veterans on a brisk 13-mile ride in the Texas Panhandle’s blazing early summer heat.

The trek, the first of three days of riding, is part of what Bush Institute officials call the former president’s…

SCCCC Conference Championships – LSU
By Mitchell Sides        utexascycling.org

Finally, another college bike race! For this week, Tanner and I moved up to B. After a very successful run of Driveway Series races for Tanner (and one moderately successful race for me), I was confident we had the legs to compete in the higher category. The drive was a little long, but a fun one with my roommates. With Tanner and myself, the B team was larger than ever at 5. Blake, Daniel (Varelamonster), and Mathew made the plans, and we all did a good job with carrying them out until the finish. The plan for the weekend remained the same for the road race and crit. For Daniel and Mathew, following attacks was the name of the…

Former President George W. Bush says ride ‘uplifting’
By JACOB MAYER                 lubbockonline.com
Finishing with his legs cut and scraped, former President George W. Bush led more than 70 riders through a grueling first leg of the Bush Center Warrior 100K bike ride Thursday in a steamy Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

Afterward, the former commander-in-chief who ordered the invasion of Iraq more than nine years ago met with many of the warriors who hit the trails with him.

“Riding with our vets is an uplifting experience,” Bush said. “It is an awesome feeling and…

Bikes and fashion (and me) meet in Blacksburg next week
by Elly            Taking the Lane

The lady in this photo is Sheilanova Molina y Vedia, our host during our brief stay in Austin two weeks ago, looking chic as she headed out to her office, by bike of course. Though we stayed at her house, we only saw her for a few minutes; she was busy organizing a bicycling fashion show. Her philosophy, she told us, is that “Every…

7 Ideas To Have More Fun Mountain Biking
by Shawn            Texas Mountain Bike Trails
When you go riding, are you all about the competition with yourself or are you going to just have fun mountain biking? Some could say I have an overly competitive personality, I am highly driven and I do want to be the best at what I do. Every time I take the bike out I am gauging the time it takes, my average speed and constantly trying to get faster and better.

Sometimes though, I  just need to relax, last week was one of these times. My mind was scattered and disorganized, I was stressing myself out with my riding and constant competition with myself. I started thinking…

Invisibility Cloak Not On – April 27th Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 27, 2012 by Rick AnkrumApril 27, 2012

During the first 4 miles of today’s ride I thought I wore an invisibility cloak. Two cars pulled up in front of me but I swerved to avoid them. The first “mommy van” pulled out of a side street without even looking my direction. Next a daycare bus drove out of the daycare parking lot again not looking in my direction. The wide street provided some space for me to move to the right curb out of the way. Just when I wondered about the cloak a Jeep Wrangler stopped to let pass by the parking lot entrance they wanted to exit. Whew! I left the cloak at home after all.

The wind from yesterday and today moved the clouds in to cover the blue sky from earlier in the week. Every once in awhile the sun would cut through the clouds to keep it heated up during the ride at 83 to 86 degrees. With the south wind at 13.8 mph and gusts of 21.9 mph the humidity increased to 57% at the start (1:15) dropping to 47% at the finish (4:02). With this strong wind I got behind in my average speed for the first 15 miles and could not recover enough time to get my average speed up to 15.0 mph or more, ending up at 14.7 mph. At one point I was behind over 3 minutes from the pace to hit 15.0+ mph. I did recover a lot of time once I turned out of the wind though. Out of the 7 speed splits only 3 were 15.0 mph or above. I did manage hit a 24.4 mph max speed. Not biking the next 2 or 3 days should let my legs recover some.

I wanted to get over 30 miles today since I will not be able to ride the last 2 days of this week. Today’s 32.23 miles brought the total miles this week to 162.94 and April miles to 656.25. Year to date I stand at 1875.61 miles. Some other numbers from today’s ride:

  • 2:11:50 riding time
  • 34:43 time stopped (Huffman Chevron resting accounts for most of this. I thought going west after this point the wind would be in my face, it did not turn out to be real bad.)
  • 10:54:17 riding time this week
  • 43:26:39 riding time in April (21 biking days so far)
  • 77.3 RPM average cadence (not as slow as I thought it might end up at)

Tire choice for Mineral Wells trailway
by cuda2k            www.bikeforums.net
Planning to ride the full length (both ways) Mineral Wells trail way in a few weeks on my Schwinn Crosscut. Wide 700c rims, drop bars, no suspension. It’s currently equipped with semi-slick 38mm city/street tires. I also have a pair of 33mm cyclocross tires with a low pyramid tread in the middle with knobs along the outside. So, for those who have ridden parts of the trailway, which would you take?

Iraq vet battling PTSD pedals his way to recovery
By Matthew Hansen        WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER
Marine Sgt. David Wright of Omaha will climb on his mountain bike today in northern Texas, take a couple of deep breaths to calm his nerves, and begin to pedal through the second-largest canyon in the United States.

He’ll be pedaling away from a past of daily roadside bombs in Fallujah and then the daily drinking binges to numb the panic attacks and the flashbacks.

He’ll be pedaling alongside former President George W. Bush, who was Wright’s commander in chief during two tours of duty in Iraq. …

Joe Martin Stage Race Hill TT
by Ken            Texas Racing Life
Greeting from Fayetteville, Arkansas!  Bill and I are here representing the Shama Race Team at one of the biggest races in the country.  We are racing the Elite category and having a blast getting our feet wet in big stage racing.

The Joe Martin Stage Race consists of  four days of racing: an uphill TT, a 110 mile road race, and 90 mile road race, and a downtown crit.  We knew the competition would be extremely good, and therefore didn’t know exactly what…

The Matrix Challenge
Matti von Kessing

This past weekend, I reluctantly made the decision to venture outside of my comfort zone to race an extremely technical crit.  JT was able to talk me into making the trip to Dallas to race two days of the Matrix Challenge.  The importance he placed on the race didn’t help ease the apprehension that I felt about the course: eight turns in less than a mile; the antithesis of my race of choice.  But I suppose one can’t improve if he or she don’t practice.  In that line…

Legs Could Not Overcome the Wind – April 26th Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 26, 2012 by Rick AnkrumApril 26, 2012

My legs could were no match for the wind today. I started out on my northerly route hoping the tailwind from the south would help my legs get loose and ready for the return into the wind. With the wind from the south at 18.6 mph and 26.5 mph gusts going back home went slow. I geared down one rear cog which helped some but not enough so that I could do a mile in less than 4 minutes, the pace to get to 15.0 mph average speed. The wind was especially strong on the US59 service road where the there are no trees to protect me. Going north this is a good thing because I rode at 20+ mph for about 8 miles until I got to FM1485 in New Caney.

This was not unexpected with the mileage and number of rides since April 18th. Today is the ninth day in a row biking and the muscles can only do so much without rest. I did work in the yard before biking clipping some dead branches from our waxleaf ligustrums and trimming red tip photenias. The trash men will love me tomorrow. I will take Saturday and Sunday off due to a meeting and Special Olympics cycle practice with my niece. The rest will be appreciated. I should be able to ride tomorrow.

The weather heated up some today with the temperature range of 88-90 degrees with 40% humidity. The south wind moved in some high level clouds but it was warm.

I wanted to get at least 30 miles in and ended up at 30.16 miles. My average speed fell to 14.5 mph and my max speed was 20.9 mph. Average cadence was 77.5 RPM. Other ride numbers:

  • 2:04:37 riding time
  • 9:17 stopped time (no food stops today)
  • 8:42:27 riding time this week
  • 15.0 mph average speed this week (15.4 mph last week)
  • 130.71 miles this week
  • 624.03 miles in April
  • 1843.38 miles YTD
