About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

By Jamey Boyum | www.kltv.com

LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) – The idea of a pedestrian friendly “Complete Street” was suggested in 2015, and this week Longview City Council will vote on awarding a $6.5 million contract to build it.

The Longview Complete Street will be a pedestrian -riendly change to Mobberly Avenue.

Longview Public Works Project Manager Bob Watson said the plans for a major alteration to Mobberly Avenue are complete.

“2.2 miles of roadway. We start out at High Street and work all our way through Mobberly to Pacific Avenue,” Watson said.

He said the Mobberly Complete Street will basically be:

“Making the whole corridor accessible to all users, not just cars. So, if you want to ride your bike, and we see a lot of bike traffic when you drive through Mobberly, see a lot of pedestrian traffic. We’re making it …

By MARY VINSON | www.hcnews.com

The 16th annual Blazin’ Saddle 75, Granbury’s premier bicycling event, occurred on Saturday, August 3rd, starting from Granbury Middle School after a brief rain delay. The ride took cyclists on beautiful scenic 20-mile, 47-mile, 100-K, and 75-mile routes through the epic hills of Hood County, including signature climbs at Skulls Crossing, Mongo’s Mountain, and The Peak. Registration included a T-shirt, but participants could opt for a discount without it. The event was also supported by local organizations such as the Hood County Amateur Radio Club, which provided rest stops every 10-12 miles stocked with ice, water, cold towels, Gatorade, pickle juice, fruit, and snacks. There was also mechanic support available along the route. After the ride, participants took advantage of the locker rooms provided for showers and then enjoyed an after-ride party lunch. Blazin’ Saddle 75 Bicycle Rally was a not-for-profit event honored to benefit Texas EMS.

What are parking pockets? Northwest Austin roadway debuts new installation

by: Kelsey Thompson | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Transportation and Public Works Department has tweaked a stretch of roadway in northwest Austin to better protect cyclists while expanding parking access.

A department spokesperson said crews recently installed parking pockets along Far West Boulevard between Northledge Drive and Hart Lane. Those changes were made due to heightened parking demands for the intramural fields fronting the roadway, the spokesperson added.

Beating the Heat: A 38.68-Mile Journey on the Canyon Endurace

Texbiker.net Posted on August 7, 2024 by Rick AnkrumAugust 7, 2024

I extended the bike ride to the north compared to Monday’s ride to Caney Creek. This time I rode through Tavola before heading back to Kingwood following the New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch route. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike starting at 9:48 AM. According to Space City Weather the first full week of August is usually the hottest week of the year and that appears to be the case this week with the forecast calling for several 100 degrees days. My plan was to finish before the temperature got that high which I did at 1:14 PM. The wind was light allowing my legs to power me along with not too much effort though the wind shifted from the west to the south. I stopped a couple of times to refill my water bottle with ice helping me to not overheat. The previous 6 rides on this route in 2024 average a little less than 38 miles and today I rode 38.68 miles as I work towards my August goal of 904 miles. I’m getting close to the daily average of 29.2 miles I need to reach the goal. I am 16 miles short for month to date August. For 2024 year to date I am short 62 road miles.

Houston’s Grant Koontz finds bike racing thrilling yet terrifying. Now he’s riding in the Olympics

By Danielle Lerner | www.houstonchronicle.com

PARIS — When Grant Koontz turned 16, he wanted a car, like most teens. His parents gifted him a bike instead.

Little did he know that substitution would put him on a path to the Olympics.

As a student at Klein High School, Koontz competed in baseball, basketball, football and diving. He never excelled, for reasons ranging from his size to his technical abilities.

But when he first got on a bike, he realized that in cycling, there’s nowhere to hide. The sport gives back what you put into it. It was just him and the bike — no excuses.

“I think a lot of it comes down to the freedom that it gave me and the freedom to …

A Normal Bike Ride Turned Into A Nice Visit Helping Another Cyclist

Texbiker.net Posted on August 6, 2024 by Rick AnkrumAugust 6, 2024

I thought today’s bike ride would normal but to add some variety I changed the Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route a little. I rolled away at 10:18 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. This was a little later than I wanted but okay. Too many things to do before leaving. I changed the streets through Elm Grove Village, Sherwood Trails Village, and Bear Branch Village. When I reached Pinehurst Trail Drive I turned to the right to get to the Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail to ride from W. Lake Houston Parkway to Farmingham Road instead. Riding east over Lake Houston I saw another cyclist stopped I thought to repair a flat tire. Traffic was heavy so I didn’t cross over to see if I could help. At FM2100 I decided not to ride south to Spanish Cove Drive and turned north on FM2100. From Huffman I rode west on FM1960 back over Lake Houston. I turned right onto Atascocita Shores Drive. At the second street I caught up with the cyclist I saw on the causeway. I stopped to see if I could help. He had used all of his CO2 cartridges after patching the rear tire. I offered my pump. His name is Mark Williams. While he removed the rear tire and put a tube in we chatted about biking. With the tube in and pumped up he was ready to ride. I rode on and he passed me around Sunny Shores Drive. What started as a typical bike ride turned into a nice visit with Mark and helping him so he wouldn’t have to walk all the way back to Kingwood. A great day! I finished the ride at 2:08 PM.

Weather: Start 89 degrees, humidity 64%, dew point 75.4, fair, wind NW 5 mph; Finish 92 degrees, humidity 55%, dew point 73.8, partly cloudy, wind NW 4 mph.
