About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Dog Chase Revisited – April 7th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 7, 2012 by Rick AnkrumApril 7, 2012

Since last year’s encounter with four dogs chasing me on Gene Campbell Road I avoided biking there. I biked on that road for several years prior to the dogs chasing me but the one incident stopped me going there. I wanted to drive my Jeep down the road to check out the situation but it is out of the way and I never made the drive. Today I decided this needs to be put behind me. So the route today included a west bound ride on Gene Campbell Road. I thought in my mind if the dogs chased again I would use my cell phone to call 911 to get some legal presence and the owner to restrain the dogs. More on this in a moment.

The picture perfect weather for today’s ride helped me keep the speed up as I rode north and west. Even when I turned to the southeast going into the 9 mph wind I could get my speed up to 18 mph to 20 mph. The low humidity (for our area anyway) of around 40% meant the airflow evaporated my perspiration quickly and thus I stayed cool even in the sun. When I rode in the shade the temperature was very pleasant. With the late afternoon start (2:30PM) the shadows covered many sections of the roads. To go with that I could smell honeysuckle and wax leaf ligustrum blooms which pleased the nose. Partly cloudy skies and 87 degrees made this an enjoyable ride.

Day three of mulch hauling and spreading went well. The pile shrunk but still remains. With only a 35 foot bed left to cover it appears we bought more than we need. Monday I will finish the remaining flower bed. So the this three day exercise did not inhibit my biking other than the time of day. I wondered what we would do with the left over mulch in the driveway but our neighbor across the street said they need some and will buy what we don’t need. Whew! I won’t have to drive around it for too long.

Now back to the dog chase situation. I think the mulch exercise and increased biking activity enhanced my ability to go faster for longer stretches even though I am a geezer. This came into play as I turned onto Gene Campbell Road. My memory of the dog chase location indicated around the 15 mile point I should pass the dogs residence. I wanted to keep my speed at 18 mph or above with the plan to outrun the beasts. Along this road the houses not many houses front the road except the dogs’. Prepared for the worst I looked down the driveway to their house expecting them to run out but I did not see one dog in the driveway or the yard. My first thought: the dog chase threat has receded but based on past experience I know this hasty judgment can be wrong. So I will try the road again soon to validate the dogs return to captivity with a wary eye on their yard.

Tomorrow is Easter so biking but I will watch the Paris-Roubaix on NBCSports (recorded). We will visit my wife’s brother and family for the traditional gathering of relatives, friends and neighbors in Splendora, TX.

Today’s ride recap:

  • 2:17:30 riding time moving
  • 15.4 mph average speed
  • 21.4 mph max speed (25.8 mph according to RideWithgps.com)
  • 80.0 RPM average cadence
  • 35.28 miles today
  • 163.02 miles this week (Monday – Saturday)
  • 179.40 miles in April (days biked: 6)

SHNF Trail Closures and a Call For Volunteers

As many of you are aware all trails in the Sam Houston National Forest are closed because of an order related to the dead trees. The number of dead trees in close proximity to the trails has caused for the forest service to prohibit all use of trails (including Double Lake) due to the perceived hazard that the falling dead trees may pose to users. The background to the…

Rolling with Fort Worth’s Night Riders
By Eric Griffey, Special to the Star-Telegram
I felt like I’d just seen a flash mob, or had been involved in an experiment to test my threshold for body odor.

It was a few months ago at Malone’s Pub, and my pool game was suddenly interrupted by a rambunctious group of sweaty, smelly and loud people. And then, in the blink of an eye, they vanished like a fast-moving storm, leaving only a few empty bottles in their wake.

What just happened here?

The bartender told me that it was a bicycle pub crawl that met every Sunday and rode to different bars. When I started looking online to find the group, though, I was surprised to find out there wasn’t just one such…

BILL CULLINS: Fort Davis stage race promises to be a challenge

Classic Adventure–Texas Hill Country
www.loveofbikes.com
There were several firsts on this bike tour: first bike tour in Texas, first bike tour with Classic Adventures and my first tour to receive compensation (discount on cost of my tour) for writing about the riding!
Win – Win – Win!
I will admit to a certain amount of fear and trepidation going in – what if I didn’t like the tour? I’m not a writer of fiction, just a blogger and if I didn’t like something it would come through. I’m happy (and relieved) to report that, like most time that is spent worrying, it was all for naught. Now the only question is whether I can do the bike tour justice. I would hope it goes without saying that everything I write is…

The Best Mountain Bike Tip Is…
by Shawn        www.texasmountainbiketrails.com
Keep your eyes on the trail.

There is plenty of scenery and beautiful surroundings to keep you distracted, especially right now in spring when flowers are blooming everywhere and fields are covered in bluebonnets. But do yourself a giant favor and keep your focus on what’s ahead.

Always look at the trail and obstacles ahead of you. Keep your eyes focused exactly where you are headed about 20 to 30 feet in front of you. You should be studying the terrain, watching out for rocks and roots that are coming up or low hanging branches. Don’t go flying around a turn while looking at…

Good Friday, Great Ride – April 6th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 6, 2012 by Rick AnkrumApril 6, 2012

Shoveling mulch entered the second day. We moved about the same amount of mulch as yesterday. Getting out of bed and moving around did not seem impaired and powering the bike continues equal or better than previous efforts. My wife’s approach to spreading mulch is to spread the whole pile in one day and then suffer the consequences the next day. My approach spreads the mulch over three days or more without the pain buildup from the one frenzy. So far my approach works the best.

Good Friday provided excellent weather: partly cloudy sky, 84 degrees at the finish and a mild 8 mph southeast breeze. Humidity of 36% meant the cooling effect when moving kept my jersey pretty dry and comfortable. Even though I started a little later than I wanted (2:33 PM) I decided to lengthen my route by adding a loop taking me around the grass farms north of Crosby, TX. The weather conditions encouraged this choice. At one point I looked up and another biker was passing me going the opposite direction. I did not expect to see anyone out biking. I could go almost any direction at full speed and not be hampered by the wind. Passing through shady areas was extra pleasant.

Today’s numbers:

  • 2:31:03 riding time
  • 15.3 mph average speed
  • 24.4 mph max speed
  • 80.3 RPM average cadence
  • 38.43 miles today
  • 127.75 miles this week
  • 144.12 miles in April (biked 5 days out of 6 so far)
  • 1363.47 miles YTD
  • Garmin Connect data link

Best Tire Combo for Texas (Houston & Conroe)
by Blk02                forums.mtbr.com
I have been running the Kenda Nevegals front and back 29×2.10 on my Pivot since I brought it back from Colorado, but the Nevegal rear tire is a slow roller. I had to air the rear tire up to 40psi before I felt like I was moving again on the trails at Huntsville. I am 190lbs. I am wondering about keeping the front tire and swapping the rear with something new. I was thinking a Maxxis Crossmark or Kenda Slant Six for the rear. I am leaning more towards the Slant Six because it seems to have more bite and cornering ability. Also, whether to go with the Slant Six 29×2.00 or 29×2.20. There is about a 40g weight difference. I will stick with the tube version because the…

San Antonio Bike Shops….Need Advice
by jasmorg1075                forums.mtbr.com
I have a 2011 Giant Anthem X 29er. I took it into one of the shops on the north central side of town (not Performance Bike) and I will not name the shop, but I seem to be having a few problems that they can’t address or won’t address.

I brought the bike in to get 3 specific items looked at (crazy loud front brake, creaking/grinding bottom braket/cranks, and real wheel seems off center (dish issue?).

I was told to start off with a tune up and they can address those areas. Wife picked up the bike so I couldn’t address issues then. I got home…looked at bike at the rear wheel is still slightly left. It doesn’t’ affect the rideability and I’ve read there are other Anthem owners with same problem (it just…
