As I biked today I could smell freshly cut grass at points along the route. Partly cloudy skies, 86 degrees and a 9.2 mph SSE breeze added to my enjoyment. While I rode under the canopy of trees on the trails when I did get out in the open the sun did not over heat me. Lots of people walked, jogged and biked on the trails. This can be good and bad if people do not pay attention.
I am ready for my road bike to return. My legs are not used to pedaling a heavy mountain bike into the wind and up small hills. I will watch the Tour of Flanders this afternoon recorded earlier today).

Who is attending this year? What start point are you beginning the ride at? What routes are you taking?
This will be my third year on the ride. I will be starting from my house on the west side of Houston. I don’t think I’ll be riding through the park this year, I think I’ll take the express route out of La Grange.
I am changing it up this year though. I will head out early Saturday morning to beat the rush of people on the ride. I will stop in Bellville for the lunch break. Then I will head out again and ride to La Grange. I’ll make a pit stop at the team tent, get something to eat, rest for a little bit and rehydrate some, then…

Finding Time to Train (The Life/Cycling Balance)
by (Victor Jimenez, Darryl Kotyk, Rob Grissom)Â Â Â Â Â Â Cycling 360 media
Do you have difficulty finding the time to get in quality training on your bike, or including your cycling into your life balance? Like most things in life, we have to make time for the things that matter most to us…. and cycling is definitely one of those things that we need to make time for. Not only do many of us just want to get out there on our bikes, but those who race need to make sure they…
In a confluence of bloggy excellence, I have been thinking about biking (well duh) but more specifically bike shops. Four things I have read over the last couple of months along with conversations with local bike shop owners has really got me thinking about the role of shops in our bike ecosystem here in Austin. Firstly, a tongue in cheek post by BikeSnob, detailing your different types of local bike shops had me thinking through and…
Great Article In The March 2012 Far North Dallas Advocate
by dickdavid         Bike Friendly Richardson
You might have read in this post, local blogs, Suburban Assault and Biking In Dallas were mentioned in a local magazine, the Far North Dallas Advocate. It is a really great article that made it to print in their March 2012 issue. Unfortunately, since this is the last day of the month, most of those issues are gone or replaced with April…
Ride YOUR Bike
by Katie Koehler      www.texas4000.org
Mellow Johnny’s, a local bike shop in Austin, has a long standing campaign to encourage people to ride their bikes instead of using cars, buses, and other motorized transportation. All throughout the store you will see mock gas station pumps that read “RIDE YOUR BIKE” in the screens that list price per gallon, number of gallons and total cost. The whole campaign is clever and catchy. I find myself thinking about it a lot. But as I purchased a simple sticker with the Mellow Johnny slogan, “Ride your bike”, to place on my bike, its come to mean something entirely different than its marketing purpose.
The second day of my team’s spring break ride (we rode 210 miles in three days) was the toughest. We were going from Bastrop State Park in Bastrop to Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. Our day was meant to be 76 miles, but due to road closures we had to take an 8 mile detour. The roads seemed…
Sam Houston National Forest closes areas due to hazardous trees
From Community Reports
As trees continue to die in the wake of last summer’s historic drought, safety concerns for forest visitors are prompting the closure of several areas in the Sam Houston National Forest.
Among areas closed are Cagle Hiking Trail, John’s Point Trail, Long Star Hiking Trail, Multi-Use Trail, Office Hiking Trail, Equestrian Trail, Double Lake Shore Hiking Trail and Double Lake Mountain Bike Trail. In addition, some hunter camps and some parking areas will be posted as closed as well as Kelly’s Pond camping…
Today I biked on the greenbelt trails during the morning on my Motobecane 700HT mountain bike. Riding on the trails under the tree cover kept the temperature low and the scenery high. I even rode on some dirt trail amongst some high grass. The ground was not as damp as yesterday’s short section. The paved trails were mostly dry with some water puddles on the side of the trail. Traffic was higher than during the week with people walking, jogging and biking. Apparently the trails are a popular place on a Saturday.
The road bike still resides at the bike shop awaiting the mystery tapping repair. It should be done by Monday afternoon.
The muscles dynamics when mountain biking seem different from road biking. I think I am putting out the same effort and the speed does not reflect it. Part of the difference is the gearing. This is like comparing an 18 wheeler versus a sports car.
The temperature range for today’s ride: 72 to 76. Partly cloudy sky with a light 5.8 mph SSW wind complete the weather picture.
Cycling notebook: Bike-to-work days roll out this spring
By Dale Robertson
Mayor Annise Parker has confirmed her involvement, and City Council members are also being encouraged to ride in the first of three upcoming bike-to-work days that are intended, more than ever, to emphasize the viability of pedal power for commuting in Houston.
Parker will be part of the April 13 ride from the Memorial Park Picnic Loop to City Hall, which, for the first time, will also offer a group ride back to the park at 4:30 p.m. The mayor, for her part, will be using an…

By John Foote          www.ultraracenews.com
Dave Preston didn’t have too much going for him heading into the 2012 Texas RAAM Cycling Challenge 400 mile race in Marble Head, TX. Preston, from Issaquah,Washington had planned on racing the TX Hill Country 600km race the week before, but wasn’t able to make it. Seeing how he was counting on seeing the Hill Country, Preston signed up for the 400 mile race the following weekend. Strike two came after he had confirmed all travel arrangement and the developed a couple of different medical issues including the flu and kidney issues.

The April San Antonio Wheelmen Pedaler Newsletter
As usual, March has turned out to be a great month for riding. We all should take advantage of the weather when temperatures are in the 60’s and 70’s. This past weekend, I saw a lot of riders having fun on their bikes in Gruene, Cibolo, Garden Ridge, and Schertz. A few riders were even stopping to take photos with a background of beautiful flowers. Of course, daylight savings time provides us with an opportunity to get in a ride after work. I’ll take the hour-long ride after work over…

24th Annual Beauty and the Beast Bicycle Tour
Tyler Bicycle Club
The weather was perfect, over 800 riders, a WWII aircraft flyover, a little competition, and 200 plus volunteers made up the 24th Annual Beauty and the Beast Bicycle Tour this year. People came from miles around, as far away as Nebraska and as close a Bullard, aging from nine to 79 to ride this year’s tour. The efforts of everyone involved could be heard in the positive echoes of both riders and spectators located at each rest stop, on the routes, and especially from those finishing “The Beast!” As hard as it was to get up that…
The boom in biking benefits everyone, not just bicyclists
PeopleForBikes.org
For the past year powerful voices around Washington have singled out programs to improve biking and walking as flagrant examples of wasteful government spending.
Since last summer, proposals have flown around the Capitol to strip away all designated transportation funds for biking and walking—even though biking and walking account for 12 percent of all trip across America but receive only 1.6 percent of federal funding.
But yesterday (March 29) the U.S. House of Representatives—the hotbed of opposition to bike and walking as well as transit programs—voted to extend the current surface transportation bill for another three months, saving the funding of bike and ped programs. The Senate followed two hours later. (This marks the 9th extension of the…

On Saturday, the University of Texas hosted a road race and team time trial at Pace Bend Park. The park was teeming with fresh blooms of Texas wildflowers, as the week long Texas spring was still in effect Saturday morning. The road race consisted of multiple laps of a 6 mile loop, with several short but steep climbs totaling about 200 feet of elevation change per lap. The hills seemed easy at first, but begin to add up after a few laps. The growing women’s A field experienced a total of 1700 feet of climbing over their 49 mile race. Untouchable Midwestern State (MSU) rider Jessica Prinner broke away on her own early on, allowing her 3…
