About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Big Victory for Biking & Walking in the Senate!
Alliance for Biking & Walking: People Powered Blog
We’ve just won a big battle for biking and walking in the Senate. After several long weeks of intense work from advocates around the country, the Cardin-Cochran Amendment has been accepted as part of the base Senate transportation bill, MAP-21.

If MAP-21 becomes law, the language from this amendment will ensure that local governments, school systems, and metropolitan planning organizations are able to access much-needed funds to…

This edition of Loving the Commute includes a fantastic commuting video, featuring and edited by Aaron Madrid
Truly Loving the Commute
In addition to being a lot of fun, commuting by bike has many other benefits as well.  There are stats all over the internet that point to health and cost benefits, not to mention the more obvious points.  For me, commuting to work was a goal more closely tied with weight loss to start with.  I began riding my bike because I wanted to get fit, but I keep riding my bike because I love it. …

A light fog starts to lift off the lush rolling hills as two buffalo graze in the field adjacent to a large farm house that is surrounded by rustic wooden cabins. Leaning against a wooden fence are bicycles.

Your next tune-up for the BP MS150: Great Escape Bicycle Ride
by Rex Knepp            Houston Cycling Examiner
Chances are no one’s going to ask you to help dig a tunnel and the late Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson won’t be there to help you unload the bikes from the roof rack, but that doesn’t mean that the Pearland Cycling Club’s 2012 Great Escape Bicycle Ride won’t be a great time! Azaleas blooming bright red – March 2nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 2, 2012 by Rick AnkrumMarch 2, 2012

Before my ride today while I sat at our breakfast table I glanced over at my home weather station and noticed the wind gauge at 6 mph. Due to all of the trees and houses the speed does not get that high unless it really blows. So I knew my ride would probably be tough heading into the wind. Supposedly a front will arrive later today with north winds 10 to 20 mph and maybe some rain. While the clouds looked heavy at times during the ride the rain held off. Another warm day with the temperature at 82 when I started and 81 when I finished. A few days ago I complained about cold and now the temperature responds.

Azaleas blooming bright red adorned the route from time to time. I mistakenly thought the blooming was too early since the Houston Azalea Trail starts on March 9th. Other spring time blooms are appearing as well. This makes the bike ride scenic and in some cases fragrant. No other bikers spotted today since I ride in the afternoon. Today’s route totaled 29.48 miles, average speed 15.2 mph (I did not think I would get the average this high due to the wind), max speed 24.1 mph, 79.3 RPM average cadence. March miles total 55.47 and YTD miles 691.56. Garmin Connect data link.

I am thinking of riding the Gator Ride in Baytown tomorrow if the weather cooperates.

One of our number has fallen
By Chris Tucker via email
The Kerrville local cycling Yahoo group has announced the death of one of our number, killed by a hit & run driver on Hwy 27. No stories posted to the local press that I can find, yet. Will forward when I can.

To the best of my knowledge this is the first time one of the locals here has been killed on a bicycle, though it happens too often in San Antonio.

I also like the fact that he recalls course marshals encouragement and the sound of cowbells. To those of us to work and volunteer at races it is nice to know we’re noticed! …

Austin to Host CX Nationals in 2015
by minorbaker        Austin on Two Wheels
A tie is like kissing your sister.  I don’t know who originally said this, but today a tie was not at all like kissing my sister what I think kissing my sister is like.  Two months ago, Austin was named as a finalist city for the chance to host Cyclocross Nationals in 2014 and 2015.  Along with other finalist cities, Boulder, CO and Asheville, NC, Austin put our best foot forward when the decision committee arrived in January, and we showed off the ultimate urban CX race course in Zilker Park.

When I originally saw the list of potential host cities, I figured that Austin was low man on the totem pole, when compared to bike crazy Boulder (established CX community, ridiculously awesome CX course, and a number of former National Champions), Asheville was planning on holding there potential race at the Biltmore Estate, which…

I’m getting a late start but here is a bike worth recognizing. This Seven Elium SLX belongs to Phil Bright long time member of the manly bulge bicycle club (MBBC). The bike was stripped down and sent back to the Seven factory for complete refurb which includes brushing the titanium, cleaning the carbon, checking alignment, installing new decals and headtube badge and applying a…

Pace Bend Road Race Cat 2 2012
by Ken            Texas Racing Life
Race Backwards. It’s easier.
Two things: This race was disappointing for me. And,  I had a freaking blast.

The Race:
Heart pounding out of my chest, I managed to keep around 10th to 15th wheel.  I was ready to end this.  With my body eating itself, I felt like I was about to fall asleep on the bike, except I was doing 350 Watts near the last climb.  My mind was drifting from thinking about how the BikeBarn rider managed to get to Cat2’s without shaving his legs and reciting the lyrics to Wiz Khalifa’s Black and Yellow.  I wouldn’t listen to his music if he didn’t have such an awesome name.  As riders at the front started to surge on the last hill, I stood up to follow.  And then I sat down.  Why won’t my legs churn out the power needed to keep up with the group?  I’m getting…

Congratulations Woodlands Cycling Club
by Alan Charley
Dear Everyone, Today marks a “big moment” in the history of The Woodlands Cycling Club  Steve Schoger, Bruce Cunningham, John Hefti, Renee O’Neal, and myself had the opportunity to attend The Council of National Recreation and Park Association awards ceremony which took place today at the Marriot Woodlands Waterway Convention Center. I am very proud to announce our club was recognized as the “Best Organization” in the “Southeast Region” of this large national association. The Southeast Region is one (1) of eight (8) regions in the United States which includes the States of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.   For the WCC to be recognized as the “Best Organization” is a direct reflection of (each of you) and your commitment and efforts to encourage bicycling for health, recreation and sport.  This citation also…

Spring Anyone? – March 1st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 1, 2012 by Rick AnkrumMarch 1, 2012

It feels like spring arrived today during my bike ride. As I left on my ride I thought the overcast sky would stick with me for the whole ride but about an hour into the ride some blue starting peeking through the clouds. By the time I finished the blue sky gained even more. As I bike the flowers and trees showed signs of spring. I stopped for three pictures along the route just to prove the theory.

The temperature started out at 74 and by the end it topped out at 81. Wind was not too much at 9 mph from the south. It seemed more than that when I biked into it. The saying goes for March weather “in like a lamb, out like a lion”. In southeast Texas the lamb arrived but not so for some people in Missouri, Kansas and Kentucky yesterday which would have been March except for the leap year day. Now we have 30 days to see if the lion shows up when March leaves. I wore a long sleeve jersey because I thought the temperature would stay in the 70’s but it turned out to be my sunscreen. We are only 10 days from daylight savings time arriving March 11th. Last year I would still be biking in the dark after work but now with retirement daytime biking is the norm.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • 25.99 miles
  • 15.0 mph average speed
  • 22.3 mph max speed
  • 80.5 RPM average cadence
  • 662.09 YTD miles
