About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Biking in February in southeast Texas requires patience – February 16th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 16, 2012 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 16, 2012

Biking in February in southeast Texas requires patience. The weather seems to go against the forecast almost every day. Yesterday started with fog, moved to rain and ended with more fog. Today if I believed the forecast by afternoon the clouds would thin out and sunshine would appear. About the only part of the forecast that came rue was the afternoon part. The sun never arrived thanks to the overcast sky. When I started the ride the weather station showed a double 68 for the temperature and humidity. I decided to wear leg warmers because when I started to get ready the temperature stood at 69 degrees so the trend looked downward. I figured I would rather be too warm than too cool. The rest of my apparel include a windbreaker, long sleeve jersey, bike shorts and half finger gloves. With this outfit I rode in comfort not counting the physical effort.

With the 8.1 mph wind from the north I chose the north bound route to bike into the wind at the first part of the ride. Since the wind was not that strong I did not have any real resistance but I can tell the legs need a more consistent workout. The first 5 mile split recorded a 12.9 mph average speed. I got this mainly because I followed another biker for about a mile at a very low speed and I could not pass him due to being on the bike path. By the time I got to the next split I was over 3 minutes behind a 15+ mph average speed. I did make up some of the lost time to get the final average speed up to 14.9 mph over the 25.75 mile route. Max speed was 20.8 mph and average cadence was 80.0 RPM just .5 RPM below Tuesday’s ride. February miles now total 168.08 and YTD miles reached 435.33.

The coming weekend includes several area rides but the weather forecast of 70% rain and a high of 61 degrees will keep me indoors. Remember my opening line in this post?

Helping the much needed medicine go down…..
by Laura Scagno             Austin Ridge Riders

You can’t please all the people all the time. In many cases, you just do what is right and sit back until the dust settles. That being said, we send our sincerest thanks to Jake Carsten and Jenny Abraham of the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew for hosting the Better Living Through Trails presentation and conducting the trail building school over the past weekend (February 11-12, 2012).  …

Spoonful Of Sugar
by Jake and Jenny        www.imba.com
Trail closures and reroutes. It can be a sticky topic. You certainly can’t make everyone happy all of the time. Inevitably, when you make the decision to shut down a section of trail because it’s unsustainable or unsafe, you will be shutting down somebody’s favorite stretch of trail. When you do decide it’s best to close something down, it’s best to try your best to replace it with a reroute that will provide as many or more smiles as the section you’re closing.

We and our hosts, the Austin Ridge Riders, faced this very issue on our project this weekend. Walnut Creek Park is a very popular trail system in metro Austin and very heavily trafficked by mountain bikers, hikers, runners, and off-leash dog walkers. It’s a wonderful in-town recreation resource, but it’s being loved to death. The heavy traffic, drought-deluge cycles, and numerous unsustainably routed fall-line trails have led to ongoing maintenance issues on sections that hold…

Who made the decision as to the 2012 IMBA Trail Care Crew Project at Walnut Creek and why?
by chardog                 Austin Ridge Riders
There has been some talk on BikeMojo regarding the trail work completed at Walnut Creek over the weekend of Frebruary 11-12. I wanted to share this response from members of the IMBA Trail Care Crew regarding the location and project selected.
Charlie
VP Austin Ridge Riders

From the IMBA TCC
The IMBA TCC took the time to provide this detailed explanation of the rationale, considerations and approval process involved in the trail project. Once again, thanks to the TCC crew and all the great volunteers on this and every trail project:

We analyzed five different potential trail projects with the Ridge Riders to be a part of the IMBA Trail Building School. After much deliberation and with input from the park manager, we identified the reroute / reclamation of the 4-way fall line intersection as the project providing the most learning potential for volunteers, and the most overall positive improvement to…

First pedals
by katiejo            Austin on Two wheels
There is a special set of circumstances that accompanies biking with children in tow. The streets seem kinder, the traffic slower, and the world smiles with us. The light heartedness of childhood is contagious.

Remember the first time you took your bicycle out with out your parents? I do. I was 5 years old. My 9 year old sister and I had permission to ride across our neighborhood to deliver a school fundraiser order that had arrived. Think tins of popcorn and small girls. This was before Girl Scouts were considered child labor and junk food. Small town in the 80s, families let their kids loose on the peaceful streets without a blink of an eye. I have so…

Super Bowl Sunday Wrapup
Greater Dallas Cyclists
Thanks to all the area cyclists who braved the cold weather conditions and joined GDB on our 27th Annual SuperBowl Sunday ride the West End. We had a great turnout for the annual ride-despite the rather chilly weather! It was great to meet new friends, and of course, see old friends. Dick’s Last Resort did a great job with the food and service at the place was packed!

Princess got “punked” by Richard from the FWBA. Richard saw The Italian parked outside the restaurant, and couldn’t resist lifting the bling off the saddle bag. Princess got her bling back the day of the…

City Council to vote on Bike Plan next Tuesday 2/21
by bikedenton
After years of work and growing momentum, Denton’s Bike Plan is finally going to city council next Tuesday for a vote. I’ll keep this short and say this is the time to show up and support the plan, if you want it to pass. Even if you think it’ll pass, simply showing up and filling out a comment card or speaking will add tremendous weight to…

Safe Passing Approved In Plano
by dickdavid        Bike Friendly Richardson
BFR stopped by to show our support for cyclists who were working to get a Safe Passing Ordinance approved in Plano – which was on the Plano City Council’s meeting agenda last night. There was a crowd of  about fifty cyclists, who also came out to show their support.

I have to give some recognition to the Plano City Council. Not knowing what to expect at this session, I was worried that there might be some hesitation or debate with passing this ordinance. Fortunately, the vote was…

Farenthold’s tribulations over trail funding
By Editorial Board            Corpus Christi Caller
CORPUS CHRISTI — U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold’s vote against federal funding for hike and bike pathways puts him in an interesting, difficult position, having said no to a vocal constituency. There seems to be some misunderstanding as to whether he broke a promise. But voting yes would have contradicted both the Corpus Christi Republican’s philosophy on federal spending and the promises he made to voters. …

Cedar Park Day Two
by Doc            McKinney Velo Club

Saturday he had a solid day of road racing — 5th in the 1/2/3 in the morning before helping launch Brandish and Hobson into 4th and 5th in the 40+ that afternoon. But on Sunday, Brownie came out ready to seize the prize Sunday. After initiating a three man break, he did just that, taking the 40+ victory. Behind, ‘Seabass’ Brad Price battled a trio of OKC guys before finishing a solid 7th. Congrats boys on the start of what promises to be another solid season for MV.

The following post applies to the road as well as the trail.

This is brief, I just want to ask you one question.
What do you do when you see someone stopped on the side of the trail?
This weekend I had the unfortunate experience of getting a flat and as I was stopped to fix it I noticed something very interesting…

1/4 of the other riders might ride by and just ignore you, but the other 3/4 of riders will stop and genuinely ask you if they can help. They will give you a tube, help you fix a flat, or even mend a chain. Even President George…

Wow! Sun, dry and warm all at the same time – February 14th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 14, 2012 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 14, 2012

Wow! Sun, dry and warm all at the same time. This hasn’t happened in at least 6 days when I last biked. Even then the weather was not that great. At my home weather station it showed 70 degrees at the start and moved down to 68 at the end. Another weather station in my area was warmer by 3 or 4 degrees. I got the road bike out and headed out at 2:35 with the intent of getting at least 28 miles on the Garmin Edge. I ended up at 29.88 miles. The first 5 miles was a rather slow 13.2 mph average speed. I was beginning to think the 6 day layoff sucked all of the strength out my legs. After that first 5 mile split though I managed to keep my average speed above 15.0 mph and ended up at 15.1 mph for the overall ride. Max speed topped out at 23.1 mph and the average cadence was 80.5 RPM.

With all of the rain over the last several weeks Lake Houston looks to be 100% full and the ground is saturated enough that water is running on to the road in many places. This means riding through the water and getting my clean bike dirty! In the summer I will probably be wishing for some rain though. There was one other biker out on my route. He was tucked into his aero bars and going the opposite direction.

February miles stand at 142.33 and YTD 409.58 miles. So far this year I biked 30 hours and 45 minutes. The weather looks iffy for tomorrow. Garmin Connect data link and RideWithgps.com data link.
