About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Do Not Pound the Stitches – January 30th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 30, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 30, 2012

My last bike ride took place on Thursday January 26th. Since then I did not bike because of some minor surgery on my right calf. The doctor said to not bike for a few days today ended the few days. So back on the bike but I backed off of the mountain bike gears so I would not pound the stitches. As I biked several phrases came to mind playing off the stitches angle but I will spare you from those. Since I lowered the gearing by one rear cog I did not exert my right leg as much and I chose a relatively flat route (as if we have hills in Kingwood) to not add to the drama.

Weather wise the temperature stood at 69 at the beginning and 68 at the end. The sun made an attempt to shine through the clouds but towards the end of the ride it kinda gave up. Wind held stead at 12 mph from the southeast, not too big a deal amongst the trees. The loggers almost disappeared from the trails except for one spot. No chainsaws but the chippers ground away.

Ride stats:

  • 17.49 miles
  • 11.3 mph average speed
  • 16.7 mph max speed
  • 78.1 RPM average cadence
  • January miles 267.25

Fasting Slows You Down
Dr. Gabe Mirkin’s Fitness and Health E-Zine
January 29, 2012 Newsletter
Fasting for just a few hours slows an athlete down and the longer he fasts, the slower he moves. A recent study from Denmark shows that after 72 hours of fasting, a person’s muscles accumulate far more fat and glycogen (stored sugar) than after 10 hours of fasting (American Journal of Physiology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, January 2012). This slows a competitive athlete down because it keeps muscles from responding to insulin and using more sugar for energy.

Insulin drives sugar into muscles most effectively when muscles are low on sugar and fat. Filling muscles with sugar or fat blocks insulin and reduces the amount of sugar that can enter muscle cells. Remember that when you exercise for more than an hour, you need to keep on taking sugar. The more intensely you exercise, the greater percentage of…

by elliott            Austin on Two Wheels

Bikeshare by 2013? Updates at the January Bicycle Advisory Council meeting included next steps on the creation of the recently funded Austin bikeshare program.
Last week, Austin’s Bicycle Advisory Council held their monthly meeting in new digs at City Hall. As an alternate member of the group, here is a report on the meeting.

There has been a gradual transition in the Bike/Ped department from not just infrastructure creation but also working to make cycling more appealing to the general public. City staff gave the following updates on these…

First Group Road Bike Ride, 2012
Pedal Pushers

A good lead sentence should have been, “It was a beautiful day, sunny, and a 5 mph wind.” Conditions couldn’t have been better…
OK, the temperature was in the 60’s which made it cold (chilly) for us Texans, but who could stay indoors with a 5 mph wind? We don’t see many of these days, so 10 of us decided to brave the chill and try to…

Bike Commuters Already Rolling
bikehouston.org
The Houston Chronicle Editorial “Bicycle commuting: It’s already rolling”  for Jan. 27 comments about the .5 percent of Houston commuters that make there journey to work by bicycle.  The Chronicle, quoting  the League of American Bicyclists 2010 survey, said that the 4,300 commuting cyclists is more than Dallas or Fort Worth has.

The Chronicle also expressed support for improved infrastructure for commuting , support for more…

Editorial: Bicycle commuting: It’s already rolling
Houston Chronicle
You may not think it, given our sprawling freeways, but a growing number of Houston’s commuters get to work on bicycles. A 2010 survey by the League of American Bicyclists reported that 0.5 percent of all Houston commuters get to work via bicycle. That may not seem like a large number, but it puts us far ahead of Dallas or Fort Worth. And in a driving city like Houston, even getting about 4,300 drivers out of cars and onto bikes can make the difference between a slow drive and a traffic jam. The expansion of bike lanes into downtown, such as…

Cycling added to area high school athletics
By Bill Cullins            San Angelo Standard-Times
The term “high school team” usually brings to mind sports such as football, basketball, track or baseball.

That’s rapidly changing across the nation. It’s also about to change locally with the development of the new San Angelo Composite High School Mountain Bike Team.

This San Angelo area team will complete in the Texas High School Mountain Bike league…

Texas state parks current outlook
By Angelina Perez        www.newschannel10.com
Canyon, TX – Texas state parks continue to suffer with a budget crisis after a year of fires and drought.

State parks have suffered a four-point-six million dollar shortfall, but they say after a month of fundraising, they are hoping donations and visitations will go up.

“Right now we are encouraged since we launched the fundraising campaign back in December, we just recently topped a million dollars towards that 4-point-6…

…”Overall at Palo Duro Canyon we have a few events that are scheduled for this spring. We are trying to increase our visitation through mountain bike races, trail runs, that kind of things, so we are really encouraging people to come out and participate even if it is as a spectator in some of those events,” said Evans. …

Dinosaur Valley State Park Mountain Bike Trails

Dino Valley and Solavaca trails from Braham B on Vimeo.

Located in humble Glen Rose Texas about an hour and a half southwest of Dallas-Fort Worth. Yes, this park used to have real dinosaurs and the trails here actually take you right by their fossilized tracks. This excellent state park sits on 1500+ acres of land surrounding the Paluxy River. In times of heavy rain this trail dries pretty quickly because the ground is mostly made up of limestone and…
