About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Today’s ride put me over my… – January 21st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 21, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 21, 2012

Today’s ride put me over my average January mileage of 200 miles. The 30.54 mile route was long enough that my January totals 201.79. With 10 days left I there is the possibility that I can added more miles. With the strong wind from yesterday I averaged 15.5 mph, max speed of 22.3 mph and an average cadence of 81.4 RPM. The cadence and average speed are significantly up from yesterday.

Even though the weather did not match the forecast it was not that far off. The temperature started at 73 and ended at 71. The clouds were heavy as a front moves in slowly from the northwest via the 8.1 mph NW breeze. I wore a long sleeve jersey which was a little too chilly when I was riding into the wind but just right with the wind. Maybe another jersey over the top would have helped but it might be too warm. In a few months this won’t be a question. Apparently 5 other bikers thought the weather good enough to be out biking. I passed them spread out on the route. Tomorrow is supposed to 77 degrees so I plan on enjoying the warmth while it is here.

Base Training/Base Miles
by Victor Jimenez, Darryl Kotyk, Rob Grissom        Cycle 360 Media

The term base miles (or base training) may be a new one for you, or it may be something that confuses you a little.  In this podcast, the Cycling 360 crew talks about the ins and outs of this subject and how to make the most of off-season training using these methods.

In this episode the round table discussion focuses on base training and includes valuable information including: …

Danger From the Wacky Left (Turn)
by Steve A            Dallas Point-to-Point

On Tuesday, in “Hard Right,” I related how the vulnerable road user, namely one of those giant SUVs, put himself into a position to get squished like a bug. Somewhat conveniently, today’s cautionary road tale involves a different danger, in this case, a”Wacky Left” turn brought back memories of getting hit in a very similar…

The Love Affair
by Darryl                lovingthebike.com
Ever wonder how “The Love Affair” of cycling is seen through a “non-rider’s” eyes?  Today’s guest post by Vania Selvaggi just might be the most beautifully written cycling story ever written by a non-cyclist.

Earlier this month, I read an awesome “non-cycling” article online and liked it so much that I asked the writer if she’d consider writing a post for me.  She wasn’t a cyclist herself, and I was pleasantly surprised when she so easily agreed.  Below you will find all the goodness that flowed from Vania in response to my request.  Enjoy.
The Love Affair
by Vania Selvaggi
The bike showed up four years ago. After Ian unveiled it, I stalked it from various angles. “Wow,” I said. “It’s so cute.” Ian laughed. At me. So, I switched tactics – terminology. “I mean it’s cute in a powerful way. Slick, with…

The future of bicycling in America…and how you can help
We formed Peopleforbikes.org (PFB) in 2010 to help make bicycling better for everyone. We wanted to encourage individuals to show their support for safe, stress-free bicycling in their hometowns. We wanted to publicize and celebrate all the great things that happen when people ride bikes.

So far, so good! After a solid first year, the PFB movement nearly tripled in size during 2011. Nearly 500,000 supporters now power our collective, unified voice. We will continue to grow in 2012.

We’ve rallied the PFB troops four times to show how much Americans care about the federal investment in bicycling. In 2011, our movement sent more than 100,000 letters to U.S. Representatives and Senators. These messages made a strong impression, and inspired…

I remember my slow motion fall many years ago at an intersection on a very busy street when I realized at the last moment I could not get my feet out of the pedals before I fell over. Other than the embarassment there was no injury.

Crashing made easier…and other stuff.
by minorbaker            Austin on Two Wheels
I hate falling.
I hate falling when I am going fast.
I hate falling when I am going slow.
I hate falling when it is quite obviously my fault.
I especially hate falling when it is somebody else’s fault.
If you ride your bike long enough you are bound to fall off it in some way.  I have suffered all manner of falls.  As a kid, I was hit, I hit a car, riding across town to meet my parents for breakfast.  I made assumptions that a street closed to thru traffic would not have any cars on it, and so I dove into the corner on my 40lb Huffy…

New Bike Route Signs On Collins
by dickdavid            Bike Friendly Richardson

I noticed these last night and thought I would share. The new signs – that I’ve seen so far – are placed on Plano Road (approaching Collins) and on Collins, between Plano Road and the Central overpass.

I wonder if these are place holders until they get money to finish out the painted bike lanes on Collins. …

Mud, obstacle courses offer fitness variety
By Bill Cullins            San Angelo Standard-Times
Soldiers in various stages of military training undergo hours of fitness “challenges” that test their ability to overcome tough obstacle courses under harsh conditions.

These “confidence courses” help soldiers build both physical stamina and develop a mentality of “I can overcome anything.”

In the civilian world, similar challenges are at the core of a fitness competition craze that’s increasing in…

5 Mountain Bike Obstacles You May Not Be Able To Conquer… Yet
by Shawn        Texas Mountain Bike Trails
At one time or another everyone is new to the sport of mountain biking. We all go through a process of growing and learning how to handle the different obstacles that are on the trails.

Take a look at these 5 mountain bike trail obstacles, the reasons why they are so difficult and also how to conquer and overcome them. But please don’t judge me on the artwork I used…

When you don’t follow your guidelines you pay the price – January 20th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 20, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 20, 2012

When you don’t follow your guidelines you pay the price. Today was one of those days. I decided to ride north at first today for some variety and this happened to be with the wind. The guideline bike into the wind at the start and enjoy the tailwind coming back. Most of the time the is not a serious issue but today the 12 mph south wind with 22 mph gusts got serious. As forecast by our trusty weatherman, it got up to 77 degrees settling down to 75 when I finished. Clouds rolled in and out some so the sun peeked out once in awhile. Even with this temperature I decided to wear a long sleeve jersey in case I hit some cool air and for some sun protection.

Paying the price was when I turned back toward home into the wind. The 29.4 mile route did not offer much shelter from the wind so while I could spin along at up to 24 mph going north heading south I slowed to below 10 mph at times when I got hit with some strong gusts. The road bike handled it much better than I did. I should have lowered my gears going south but I hung with the big gear and pedaled slower RPM. I ended up with 14.8 mph average speed but at the turn around point the average was almost 15.6 mph. With the strong tailwind I maxed out at 23.9 mph, averaged cadence 76.0 RPM. The RPM’s would be higher if I used lower gears. Tomorrow’s weather is supposed to repeat today’s. January miles reached 171.24.

Dallas Parks and Recreation Happy Trails Program is on Facebook
by Christopher Curnutt            Biking in Dallas

Just a quick note to say that one of the least known yet best resources for information regarding hike and bike trails in the City of Dallas might be the Dallas Parks and Recreation’s  Happy Trails program which can now be found on Facebook.  Go here as they say.

While the funding (and construction) of many of the trails in the City of Dallas might be a joint City/County/other effort, most of the hike and bike trails are managed by the Dallas Parks and Rec department, so keeping up with…

Winter Training Update
by Ken            Texas Racing Life
It only seems like yesterday, in some ways, since I got off the bike after an exciting sprint to end my 2011 season.  It has been about 4 months since the Ft Hood State Championships.  The last 3 months have been spent training for the upcoming road racing season.  In October, I knew I would have to work hard to make the complete jump to the Big Leagues and be competitive in Texas’ top category: P/1/2.

Each year in my short 3 years of cycling, I have made huge improvements in the off season.  This year I was fearing that my progress would plateau without fundamental changes in training efficiency, time management, and…

I use my time biking to think, maybe that is why I have trouble getting my average speed above 15.x!

Thinking hard may make you slow
By Ashley Yeager         bicyclelab.com
Before a big ride or race, you put air in your tires, fuel in your belly and water in your bottles. But, you may be forgetting to check one very important piece of gear – your ego.

Like your tires, you don’t want to over-inflate your ego, but now new research suggests that, like your water bottles and your belly, you don’t want to under-fill it either. …
