About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

3-29-2022 Cervelo Caledonia Ramsey Road-1

Teaching Your Toddler to Ride a Bike
urbanvelo.org

GoPro On Board – Strider World Championship – Toddler Balance Bike Racing from Balance Bike JoJo on Vimeo.

Strider bikes aren’t anything new when it comes to teaching kids how to ride, although the hipster-styled, exorbitant price tagged European models that grace toy store floors have come into favor more recently. I don’t know how it goes for most other bicycling breeders, but my stepson wouldn’t have anything to do with a machine without training wheels, not…

www.usacycling.org
Can’t make it to the 2012 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships in Wisconsin this year? You can still watch the Elite men’s and women’s races live online! We’ll be streaming both events on Sunday, January 8. Just head to the Cyclo-cross National Championships page for a link to the live feed. …

Bicycle-sharing program will start in downtown Houston
By ALLAN TURNER, HOUSTON CHRONICLE

Imagine a Houston where you could step from a light rail station, rent a bicycle for a nominal sum and pedal to your destination. The only greenhouse gas you’d emit would be your own carbon dioxide as you huffed and puffed along. Rather than fretting about burning noxious gasoline, you could gloat about burning calories.

The Houston City Council this week took the first step in putting such a system in place by awarding a $105,000 contract to a Wisconsin company to install three solar-powered bike kiosks in…

Shift Worker – Bike Rider
by katiejo        Austin on Two Wheels
I am proud to share that I have a new career, and I’m joining the work force again as a shift worker.

What does working shifts have to with bike riding, you ask?

I first started thinking about the parallels of shift working and bike riding when a friend who works shifts at Austin’s School for the Blind mentioned that he rode home each night after his shift at midnight. My shift started this morning at 6:45 am, meaning that I was awake while most of Austin was still slumbering. …

Richardson Voted To Be The Most Bike Friendly Neighborhood
by dickdavid        Bike Friendly Richardson

Bike Friendly Oak Cliff has announced their “Best Of” for bicycling in 2011. The city of Richardson has made it on their list for “Most Bike Friendly Neighborhood.”

It’s nice to get recognized for something we already knew: Richardson is a bike friendly area. With 11 miles of bike lanes and  24 miles of multi-purpose trails (with many more on the drawing board – and funded), the City of…

Waste Connections of Texas surprises young guests with bicycles
By JENNIFER SUMMER        www.yourhoustonnews.com

Smiles and screams of excitement filled the back parking lot of Waste Connections of Texas as dozens of children tried out their Christmas presents: new bicycles.

For many, this was their first time to ride a bicycle. They were gifted to the children Dec. 20. The children selected to receive the bikes were identified through Waste Connections of Texas’ partner, Humble Area Assistance Ministries. …

Don’t hibernate — enjoy the cooler weather while it’s here
By Bill Cullins            San Angelo Standard-Times
Get off that indoor spin bike. Step away from that treadmill. Do it now!

Move to the nearest exit immediately and go outside to do your workout.

People, you need to understand — this cold weather is what we were dreaming about back in July and August.

If you hibernate indoors all winter, you’ll be missing the best time of the year for outdoor cycling and running. …

Specialized Brightens the Holidays for Community Bike Shops
By Carolyn Szczepanski     Alliance for Biking & Walking: People Powered Blog
Thanks to our supporters at Specialized, this holiday season will be particularly merry for more than two dozen community bike shops and Alliance members.

Community bike shops and earn-a-bike programs are on the rise across the country, taking in recycled rides that would otherwise be landfill fodder and wrenching them back into shape for residents who need them most. In many cases, youth and low-income adults get their bike for free if they learn the skills to refurbish and maintain their bicycle. With increased…

The Hump Day Quick Tip – Pack a Snack
by Shawn        Texas Mountain Bike Trails
Ok, imagine this. You are out on a ride and all of a sudden you start getting weak. You feel off-balance, dizzy, and your legs just can’t push up the slight hills. Soon you start feeling hungry and off-balance feeling just gets worse. Next thing you know you are laid out on the grass next to the…

by Shawn            Texas Mountain Bike Trails

We are just about to Christmas and winter is under way. If you’re like me you’ve probably had enough of the short days and no chance to ride during the week after work. During the summer you had 4 more hours of daylight to soak up some single-track and get dirty. Now, you just feel…

Bicycle giveaway has special meaning during House of Hope graduation
By Dan Kleiner            www.madisonvillemeteor.com

The Lord often works in mysterious ways. But sometimes, He bestows blessings and makes miracles so obvious that it’s nearly impossible to not take notice.

Such it was for the House of Hope several months ago when Andrew Morrow arrived at their doors. On the same day that Morrow, a lifelong BMX and dirt bike enthusiast, found his new home, a donation of 65 badly worn bicycles also rolled through the doors.

Morrow stood on stage at The House of Hope’s graduation Saturday night, not yet as a graduate, but as a man who has dedicated himself to healing through Christ. After exceptional music, inspired words, and even a magic show, Morrow’s healing process continued as he presented 20 children in Madison…

Cross-U.S. Cyclist Had Only One Flat
The East Hampton Star

A seasoned triathlete, mountain-biker, marathoner, and long-distance swimmer, Emi Berger, a vivacious 34-year-old veterinarian, said during a recent conversation at The Star that she didn’t think one could train for the 4,000-mile bicycle trip that she and Kevin Harrington had recently made across the United States. …

“We began at Montauk — we dipped our back wheels in the Atlantic at Montauk Point on Sept. 23. Our goal was to dip our front wheels in the Pacific in San Diego. . . . The trip took 54 days — we rode for 53 of them, rain or shine, taking one day off, in Austin, Tex. The night before each day’s ride we’d plan our route — the Adventure Cycling organization puts out bike-specific maps for the U.S. We looked at those, and took those routes, for the most part, on country roads. We…

Reflections from my first season of cyclocross.
by minorbaker            Austin on Two Wheels
I have finished my first official season of cyclocross racing in Texas.  Full disclaimer here before I continue, I am using the word “full” very loosely, because I only participated in races close to the Austin area.  Along with local races, I have attended a number of Dirt Derby’s, and will continue to attend through the end of the series in February.  None of the races I participated in were sloppy, so I didn’t learn anything about MUD (maybe next…

Richmond inmates help build Christmas bikes for kids
By ALLAN TURNER, HOUSTON CHRONICLE

RICHMOND — Gray is the color that dominates this bleak, wet morning a few days before Christmas at the Carol Vance Unit, a minimum-security state prison in central Fort Bend County.

With its razor wire, steel bars and dim-lit, concrete-floored cubicles, Vance may seem the last spot to seek holiday warmth. But if you close your eyes – and heart – you may miss one of…

Tyler Police have been teaming up with the Bair Foundation and giving bikes to foster children for five years now.  It’s the biggest gift of the year for many of…

Wheelbrothers/UCLEAR Christmas Contest: Ryan Tibball – Entry
by WB admin

Here is a picture after completion of my first Ironman. I hope this counts as a picture submission considering I rode 112 miles during this event. My machine’s name is “Marissa”…she carried me through a tough century plus ride that day. Not only this day of riding, but many training days in preperation. I rode the HH100 with some great Wheel Brothers (love you guys). I also rode Kwanis Kicker and Make a Wish100 ride this year. All the while…

Winter Riding
by Cliff Hickel                   www.sawheelmen.com
At this time of the year, it’s tempting to store your bike in the garage until spring. I know it is challenging to ride when it is cold and windy, but stop to think about the consequences that may result from a long layoff from riding. Many of us are familiar with the weight gain and loss of conditioning that can occur when we don’t exercise during the winter. To help keep you in the swing of things, the Wheelmen ride team has a full schedule of rides every weekend during the winter. With proper preparation, you can take advantage of these winter rides to stay in…

dress shoes and pedal straps
by bikedenton
That’s right, two shoe posts in a row.

I ride with all kinds of different pedals and foot retention. I like the right tool for the job, and I don’t obsess about any one approach: SPD, platforms, clips, straps, powergrips. I found a new favorite combo this week: pedal…

Capital Metro looking for your feedback in ‘First Mile/Last Mile’ Connection Survey
by elliott            Austin on Two Wheels
Capital Metro is looking for feedback from cyclists with a brief online survey to improve and expand their services. Please take a feed minutes to take the survey.

Bicycles paired with transit makes a lot of sense. Transit greatly expands where you can go with your bike, and bikes help make transit more practical for riders by making the destinations at each stop more reachable in a short amount of time.

At November’s Bicycle Advisory Council, Capital Metro gave us a briefing on new developments for cyclist. Moving forward, the agency will be installing triple bike racks on new buses added to the fleet. Also, facilities at…
