I wasn’t sure if I was going to start today’s bike ride before 9 AM but I made it riding away at 8:52 AM on my Canyon Endurace bike. I rode south and east to Spanish Cove Drive following my Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route. I made a couple of small changes leaving out a side street loop in Bear Branch Village and adding one in Kings Forest Village.
Checking the sensors before the ride the speed sensor LED wasn’t blinking. I thought maybe it would work once the ride began but the Bolt computer didn’t show it connecting. The sensor is one I wasn’t using until the Canyon bike arrived. Maybe something was wrong with the sensor? At Towne Center Park I stopped, removed the sensor, flipped the battery over to reset the sensor, and put the battery back in. Still no blinking LED. I put the sensor in my jersey pocket and rode on using the GPS on the Bolt for speed. I thought the sensor might be bad since I replaced the battery last week. After the ride I checked the battery and it was dead. I buy the cheap Harbor Freight CR2032 batteries, this one might have been defective. I put a new battery in and the LED blinks now. I’ll check it on the next ride.
Weather continues to be a hot issue with a heat advisory for today and an expected high of 99 to 100 and the heat index above that. I start before 9 AM so I can finish before it gets real hot. Today I completed the ride at 11:46 AM and it was getting hot. Weather during the ride: Start 85 degrees, 73% humidity, dew point 75.7, partly cloudy, wind S 6 mph; Finish 92 degrees, 59% humidity, dew point 75.3, partly cloudy, wind W 9 mph. No gusts today. I felt cooler when I rode in the shade.
Today’s route is one I ride often, fourteen times in 2023 but 2 weeks since the last ride. Passing the tiny truck sales lot there were even tinier tiny trucks with the spare tire on the front on one. Biking 35.65 miles today was average for the route and bumped June’s total to 862.05 miles, well above my 800 mile goal for the month.

The AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows 33 rear derailleur shifts, 1:41:31 using the 35×13 gears (24 miles), and 41:31 using 35×15 gears (7.7 miles). Strava notified me of 3rd fastest time on NASCAR (1:14). I had to look at the map to see that was in Towne Center.
AUSTIN, Texas — The family of a man killed by fallen construction debris while cycling in West Campus has filed a lawsuit against the construction company involved.
In March, a large piece of debris from a Greystar apartment construction site near the intersection of 24th and Rio Grande streets hit and killed 29-year-old Michael Delgado while he was on his bike.
After Delgado’s death, Greystar said its thoughts were with the Delgado family and that the company had reached out to the family’s attorney to offer assistance. Greystar also said it had been cooperating with authorities in the investigation.
During the Thursday, June 22, Taylor City Council meeting, council members voted to award a construction contract to Texas Road in the amount of $4,094,857.40 for the 2022 Street Maintenance Project on the recommendation of the City’s engineering firm, HDR.
The project, which is part of the 2022 Infrastructure Bond approved by Council in a public meeting on December 8, 2022, will include seal coating, sidewalk reconstruction, street reclamation with new surface asphalt, signing, striping, and traffic control for City streets, with significant improvements to Mallard Lane, Second, and Fourth streets. In addition, there will be some travel lane changes, additional parking spaces added downtown, and bike lanes installed on Mallard Lane and Fourth Street. Construction will begin this summer and is estimated to be substantially complete by spring 2024. The City will provide additional information about the project, including an estimated timeline, a detailed description of the improvements, and information about traffic flow during construction, in the coming weeks. …

I try to not start a post about the weather but with the excessive heat warnings last week and continuing this week it is hard. No races to watch on GCN+ helps me get the ride started before 9 AM to reduce my exposure to the heat. The Cervelo Caledonia felt spirited as I rode today. Maybe from the recent rest it got while in the shop. Started the ride at 8:41 AM heading north to SH 242. The last time i rode this route was May 1st. I didn’t find that out until after I finished at 11:30 AM and checked SportTracks. The ongoing construction at the SH 242 overpass changed a little today with traffic flow moving to the left lanes on both the northbound and southbound frontage roads. I couldn’t see much difference on the main lanes west of US59. Someday the road will open and I will ride west on SH 242. The frontage road south of Roman Forest Blvd. has the shoulder blocked for what looks like an entrance to the development under construction west of US59. Fortunately the traffic is not very heavy in that area.
Riding up the hill to the TX 99 overpass on the northbound frontage road I hit 12 miles into the ride and that put me at my 800 mile goal for June. Early in the month I wondered if I would get there after not riding the first two days of the month. Since then I biked each day. With today’s 37.17 miles June totals 826.39 miles. With 4 days left I should get over 900 miles.
A short dog sprint on Railroad Ave. as I rode north. The dog was short and the sprint was too with the little dog’s legs moving as fast as they could. Lots of barking but when I sped up he faded quickly.
The replacement battery GoPro sent me has solved the low battery problem I was having. I think the old batteries had been charged the number of cycles they could handle. I use the GoPro every ride and charge the battery after the ride. That would put the number of charging cycles per year around 250 or more.
Weather: Start 85 degrees, 76% humidity, dew point 76.5, mostly cloudy, wind SW 6 mph; Finish 92 degrees, 61% humidity, dew point 76.3, mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. Excessive heat warning. The wind had some cooling effect which helped. I stopped at the 7 Eleven at FM 1314 to refill my water bottle.

ARLINGTON, Texas — An 89-year-old man who was riding an electric bicycle has died after a crash on Sunday morning, Arlington police said.
