About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycling Daily News Roundup for November 22nd

Texbiker.net Posted on November 22, 2011 by Rick AnkrumNovember 23, 2011

Today I changed the plugin that runs the Texbiker.net forums. The last couple of days there has been a rash of spam on the forum and the plugin I was using would not allow me to moderate the entries before they went public. Hopefully the new plugin does a better job.

Bike museum in planning stages
By NICHOLAS COLE, CHRONICLE CORRESPONDENT

More than 20 years ago Joy Boone, owner of Daniel Boone Cycles, 5318 Crawford, had a vision to build a bicycle museum.

This week she took the first step to make it a reality.

“I’m turning 75 years old this year; so it’s now or never,” said Boone, who recently hosted a fundraising event at the Hermann Park Garden Center, 1500 Hermann Drive, for the newly formed Houston Bicycle Museum organization. …

Thanksgiving Week Rides
by sooner1            Shawnee Trail Cycling Club
How things change!  Every year, we have moved our Thursday Night Rider to Wednesday night and taken Thursday off to stuff ourselves with turkey.  This year however, our club has grown and we now have a regularly scheduled Wed ride, the Wednesday Night Special.  So, we are cancelling the Thursday Night Rider and encouraging everyone to give the Wednesday ride a shot – we know you’ll enjoy it.  For details of that ride…

I live in Kingwood so this next article struck a chord with me. I have not been further south than Brownsville though.

Cyclist recalls bike trip from South America to Kingwood
By ROY N. KENT | 0 comments
How long would it take to ride a bicycle from the southern tip of South America to Kingwood?

At least one Kingwood native can confidently answer about 11 months.

Patrick Swift, 29, told the Rotary Club of Humble Intercontinental of his prolonged trek from the southern city of Ushuaia, Argentina, to Kingwood. It was a trip that helped him learn about different cultures which, although loosely tied with a similar language, are vastly different. People along the route were eager to help when he needed it and freely shared whatever they had with the man from the north. …

Review of the November 14th CAMPO Policy Board Meeting
by tomwald            Austin on Two Wheels

Two major subjects were discussed at the CAMPO Policy Board meeting of November 14th: CAMPO TIP Amendments and the STP-MM funding decision.
CAMPO TIP Amendments
At many CAMPO Policy Board meetings, the board considers amendments to the CAMPO Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The TIP includes transportation projects receiving federal funding that the CAMPO board has approved within the five-county CAMPO region. Sometimes project sponsors, such as TxDOT, make…

A Very Special Auction – For a Good Cause

If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.  -  Mother Teresa

In addition to being a blogger and bike obsessive, I am also a fairly charitable person; I belong to a charitable fraternity, I raise money to fight cancer, and I give prayers scribbled on scrapes of paper to the homeless when they ask me for money. I care.  Fortunately, in this great big messed up world of…

Adding a cruiser bike to the stable
By Pam LeBlanc            Fit City

My carbon road bike rolls fast on long country roads It’s sleek, light and speedy.

My orange mountain bike, depending on whether it’s wearing street tires or knobbies, carries me to work or up and down the rolling trails of Big Bend Ranch State Park, Walnut Creek Park or the Barton Creek Greenbelt.

Those two bikes take me everywhere I need to…

A Summer Day Plops Down in Late Fall – November 21st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 21, 2011 by Rick AnkrumNovember 21, 2011

Fall weather refuses to take control so today it was like I was riding on a summer day. The temperature was 80 degrees (79 at the start) under mostly cloud y skies with a 13.8 mph southeast wind. The wind did not really bother me but I suspect it held my average speed down a tenth or so. Since I did not get to bike yesterday I thought a 30 mile ride was in order. It ended up at 30.76 miles. I did not see any other serious bikers out though there were a couple of neighborhood bikers. There is a chance for rain tomorrow so I may not be able to bike then but I am ready if the opportunity arises. November miles are now at 353.97 so 400+ looks doable. I have never done that many in November. Year to date miles are now 5337.47. Average cadence was 81.8 RPM. The other information is in the data below.

A Korean teacher cycling across the country stops in East Texas
By Alexis Spears             www.ktre.com

HUNTINGTON, Texas (KTRE) –
It was a request like no other for the First Assembly of God. A 21-year old teacher from Korea cycled up to the church last Thursday, asking to spend the night in the front yard.

“He asked if he could put his tent up and stay the night to get some rest because he felt more safe staying at churches than he did just anywhere,” said First…

There is a lot of chatter about vitamin D. This article caution person looking for miracles.

Overdoses of Vitamin D Pills can Damage Your Heart
Dr. Gabe Mirkin’s Fitness and Health E-Zine
November 20, 2011
People who develop atrial fibrillation should be asked if they are taking huge doses of vitamin D. If you have an irregular heart beat and are taking massive doses of vitamin D pills, check with your doctor immediately. This cause of irregular heartbeats can be cured by stopping the pills.

Research presented at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association on November 16, 2011 showed that having high blood levels of vitamin D triples your risk for atrial fibrillation, a condition that causes the upper part of the heart to flutter, which increases risk for forming clots that can cause strokes and can block blood flow.

I think that the optimal range for blood levels of vitamin D3 is 30 to 40 ng/dl (equal to 75 to 100 nmol/L). In this study, those who had blood levels above…
