About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Not Enough Leg Power Into Gusting 21 MPH Headwind

Texbiker.net Posted on June 19, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJune 19, 2023

Due to an unplanned early morning appointment I didn’t start today’s bike ride until 10:27 AM. The excessive heat warning had time to get in place as I rode my Lynskey Helix bike on my Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route. I chose that route because it was a little shorter than my typical rides this time of the year. I finished at 1:15 PM before all of the cold water was gone from my CamelBak. When I emptied it only ice remained. Nearing the finish of the ride I tried to shift the rear derailleur to the 4th gear but it wouldn’t shift. As I got ready to leave on the ride the Bolt computer gave a warning that the rear derailleur battery was low. Usually there is enough power left to finish the ride and change gears but not today.

Wind was a problem today on the way back to Kingwood. My legs didn’t have enough power to push the 35×13 gears into the 21 mph gusting headwind as I rode south on the US59 frontage road and Valley Ranch Parkway so I used the 35×15 gears. Looking at the AXS.SRAM.com ride report the time in the 35×13 and 35×15 gears were much closer than normal. 1:07:31 for the 35×13 and 52:56 for the 35×15 gears.

Weather for the bike ride: Start 91 degrees, 68% humidity, dew point 78.7, a few clouds, wind S 10 mph gusts 21 mph; Finish 96 degrees, 56% humidity, dew point 77.9, a few clouds, wind SW 14 mph gusts 21 mph.

Breezy cafe with bikes, wine, & coffee to open in Dallas Design District

By Teresa Gubbins | dallas.culturemap.com

A highly cosmopolitan new cafe is coming to the Dallas Design District that’ll bring food, bicycles, and epic coffee together in one place. Called The Meteor, it’s a concept with locations in Austin and Bentonville, and it’s opening in Dallas in late summer at 1930 Hi Line Dr.

The cafe will open as a temporary pop-up in The Urby, a 27-story apartment building across from the Virgin Dallas hotel, taking a space that was originally designated to be a restaurant called Charley.

Eventually, The Meteor will relocate to …

Driver’s windows being smashed by mob of cyclists ‘won’t be tolerated,’ Mayor Turner says

abc13.com

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — After a story found only on 13 circulated with a disturbing video showing a mob of cyclists ambushing a man’s car, it caught the attention of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.

ABC13 posted the report on Twitter after a video obtained by Eyewitness News showed a man’s car being swarmed by a large group of cyclists. People can be seen taking turns kicking and scratching his car.

Someone even threw a brick in the back window, and another man used what appeared to be a bike chain to bash in Cashin’s front windshield.

Turner responded to ABC13’s tweet, saying the incident is "totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

Tour de Pools – Kingwood Trails Shaded By Some Trees

Texbiker.net Posted on June 18, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJune 18, 2023

Starting in the afternoon on Father’s Day in the sweltering heat I rode my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike on Kingwood trails passing many of the village pools on what I’ll call the Tour de Pools. Getting home from church after noon I rolled away at 1:24 PM. I stuck to the trails mostly to ride in the shade and lessen the heat somewhat. Each pool I passed had people in the water probably trying to stay cool. I finished at 2:55 PM. I usually mix streets and trails but today I think the ride was 90% trails and 10% streets.

I passed by pools in these villages: North Woodland Hills, South Woodland Hills, Trailwood, Kings Forest, Greentree, Mills Branch, Sherwood Trails, Elm Grove, and Hunters Ridge. There are more pools I missed.

Houston is in the midst of sweltering heat with the heat index over 100 for the past several days and into next week. I kept the ride short at 14.3 miles because of the heat. Weather during my ride: Start 95 degrees, 59% humidity, dew point 78.5, partly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph; Finish 97 degrees, 49% humidity, dew point 75.1, a few clouds, wind S 15 mph gusts 24 mph. The trees surrounding most of the trails slowed the wind otherwise it would’ve felt like a convection oven.

I stopped at the lake in Kingwood Lakes Village and took these photos. Sadly, while I walked away from the Canyon to take a photo a gust of wind hit the bike and it fell onto the concrete scratching the right brake lever, pedal, and rear derailleur. After that one of the disc brakes started rubbing and the gears made some grinding sound. Fortunately the gear grinding went away and the disc rub lessened.

This week I rode every day working on my 800 mile goal for the month. The Cervelo Caledonia spent the week in the shop so I rode my Canyon Endurace bike each day. I swapped the wheels on the Canyon to the Alpha 46 ones from the Lynskey Helix bike on Thursday for the rest of the week’s rides. I’ll probably switch the wheels back for a couple of days and ride the Lynskey. I’m at 564.92 miles for June, 71% of the way to my goal. Year to date 2023 totals 4,437 miles. I’m ahead of each year since 2011 except for 2021 (I’m behind by 1 mile) and 2020 (I’m behind by 141 miles).

Goatneck returns to Cleburne

www.cleburnetimesreview.com

The famed Goatneck Bike Ride will celebrate its 36th anniversary on July 29 when it welcomes over 1,300 riders to Cleburne. The race, which started in 1987, begins and ends at Cleburne Bible Church, 930 N. Nolan River Road, and is always held on the last Saturday of July.

The Cleburne Education Foundation became the organizer in 2022, taking over the reins from the previous organizers.

“We have one year under our belts and learned a lot in 2022. CEF is honored to continue the Goatneck legacy,” said Brad Marshall, 2023 Goatneck Chairperson and CEF board president. “This is a great opportunity for us to raise additional funds to invest back into our Cleburne ISD classrooms.
