About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Fall Must be a State of Mind – September 28th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 28, 2011 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 28, 2011

Even though it is supposed to be fall the temperature in southeast Texas (and other parts too) is in the high 90’s. I began my ride this afternoon at 12;44 and it was 90 degrees. By the time I finished at 2:38 the temperature was 98 degrees at my home weather station. The humidity dropped from 50% to 38% during the same time period. The light 5 mph westerly breeze did do much to cool things down either. Rain remains a distant memory. Along my route today I passed two ponds. One was down to just a small patch of water in the middle and the other looked to be about three feet or more below normal with some previously submerged areas well above the water line. While a promised cool front may arrive on Friday no rain is in the picture. My yard continues to dry out but I still know how to perspire while I am riding. The sweat must dry before it drip onto my bike though because I don’t have to wipe my bike off when I finish. Scattered clouds did not help block the sun and the trees are getting to be less shady as they lose their leaves from the drought. The best shade was when I stopped under an overpass with the light breeze flowing through and no sun.

I was getting tired of the same route so today I went a different direction. My goal was to get above the 15.0 mph average speed which I barely did at 15.1 mph. I was doing pretty good with about 7 miles to go but the route went through some residential areas where I have to slow down and my average speed was 14.2 mph. To go along with this my average cadence was 81.3 RPM, up from yesterday by 3.4 RPM. The route was 26.03 miles which was just slightly longer than yesterday. I am working my distance up after the three weeks off. I thought I might run into some school traffic due to the later start but that was not a problem. September miles are now 131.55 and year to date miles are 4188.36.

Biking to Work Is Ruining Your Lungs
gawker.com
Aside from the issues of safety and the ongoing bike lane wars there’s another reason that riding your bike in the city sucks: it makes your lungs black.

A new study in London found that bicycle commuters had 2.3 times as much black carbon in their lungs as those who get to work on foot. What does that mean? Well, cyclists breathe harder so…

Mother’s diagnosis of cancer motivates daughter to ride
By JENNIFER SUMMER       www.yourhoustonnews.com
The first in her family, the diagnosis of breast cancer was a surprise for Heather Zeboski.

During a routine check-up in March, her doctor found a lump that she had not felt herself through self-examinations and immediately scheduled a biopsy.

When the lump was removed, doctors realized the severity of the lump as Zeboski was diagnosed with invasive ductal incarcinoma, which could have spread if it had not been caught in the early stages.

“The diagnosis changed everything. For years, I had regular mammograms, but last year was the first year I missed an exam. My well woman doctor had left so I was referred to a new doctor, but when I went they would no…

Ride Recap 9/26/11, River Legacy
by Shawn        Texas Mountain Bike Trails
Tonight was perfect for a quick mountain bike ride. My wedding is only 12 days away (holy crap!) and I needed a little time in the trees after work tonight. Since River Legacy is only about 9 miles from my Bedford office I decided this morning to take full advantage of it.

River Legacy is in tremendous shape after the rain we got in the prior weeks. I rode the trail for the first time about one month ago and it wasn’t looking great. The soil then was cracked and brittle making some of the hard cornering a little more difficult. Today the trail was smooth and the flow was…

Biking on Day Two After My Vacation – September 27th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 27, 2011 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 27, 2011

Today was day two riding after my time off on vacation. The muscles were not complaining so much today. I got a later start today due to waiting on FedEx to make a delivery. The temperature was 92 at the start and 97 at the end. Scattered clouds hid the sun occasionally and the 4.6 mph north breeze was helpful. I could feel a slight coolness in the shade but we are continuing the run of high temperatures and no rain. My yard is a picture of dry desert conditions. Tomorrow I plan on an earlier start and there appears to be no rain to interrupt this. Humidity is below 40%. I noticed that my perspiration during the ride does not flow like it did when I biked in August. The top tube on my bike does not have perspiration drops either.

I extended my route a little today biking 25.39 miles but my average speed dropped to 14.6 mph. I thought my average speed would be closer to 15 mph but the last 5.44 miles was at 13.9 mph due to the route. The max speed was 20.6 mph and my average cadence was 77.9 RPM, also lower than yesterday.

My September miles are 105.52 and year to date I have biked 4162.33 miles. If I bike the each day left in September I should get the monthly total up to 180 miles or so.

The ultimate utility bike? Maybe it’s an e-bike
By: Jay Greene        news.cnet.com

The team created a bike for the Oregon Manifest 2011 Constructor’s Design Challenge, a bike building competition pitting three teams of designers…
