About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike the Bend for Literacy – Richmond, TX

Texbiker.net Posted on September 20, 2011 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 20, 2011

Bike the Bend for Literacy, presented by Texas Direct Auto, will be held Sunday, Nov. 20. The popular event is an opportunity to get some exercise, enjoy the scenery of Fort Bend County, prepare for the MS 150 or just spend some quality time having fun with family, friends and neighbors.

Bike the Bend is a BP MS 150 Recommended Ride benefiting the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County and begins at 8 a.m., starting and finishing at Foster High School, 4400 FM 723, in Richmond

Riders return each year to enjoy this event, which is strategically scheduled for the weekend before Thanksgiving. Along Bike the Bend’s scenic 19, 32 or 59-mile routes, riders will enjoy first-rate rest stops stocked with fruit and snacks provided by Whole Foods Market as well as a variety of cold beverages to fuel the ride.

Interested bikers may register online at Active.com or by calling the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181.

All proceeds will support the life-changing work of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County, whose mission is to end inter-generational cycles of illiteracy and generate community-wide literacy awareness. Riders, sponsors and volunteers participating in Bike the Bend for Literacy are helping to unlock the potential for determined adults who want to pass a legacy of literacy (proficiency in reading, writing and understanding the written English language) to their children.

Day 4 – Bike Ride and Trip to Austin
by Brandon Serwe     www.bsbellsbootcamps.com
After another glorious nights sleep, I awoke to the aroma of freshly cooked pancakes. After breakfast and some episodes of “Man vs. Food” (a show where an extremely unhealthy nonkettlebeller travels the country eating really delicious looking but in reality artery clogging food as well as doing food eating challenges.  For example: he had to eat a grilled cheese sandwich with 14 different types of cheese on it.) To return the favor of the…

Cotton Patch Criterium 2011
by Ken        Texas Racing Life
After an 85 mile road race, I woke to find soreness in my legs, but nothing that I couldn’t handle!  My crit was at 11 am.  The overnight rain had kept the temperature cooler for the P12 field and I  used 2 bottles of water and a couple of gels to keep me company on my bike.  Also, I was glad that my parents came out to watch the race.

The course was a squiggly rectangle, that went up and over a bridge on each lap.  The first time up the bridge was into a right-to-left crosswind, followed by a tailwind into the fast finishline.

Continuing my plan to race conservatively this weekend, I made sure to stay in the draft and only follow moves that I thought were sure to be relevant. Halfway through the race, Carlos Vargas and Stefan Rothe were able to…

Cotton Patch Omnium 2011
by Ken        Texas Racing Life
The stars finally aligned, and Ally and I had a 3-day weekend together.  We migrated north back to Garland to spend some time with family.  I would also race my bike.

This would be the second time racing the Cotton Patch.  After a disastrous road race last weekend,  I was feeling a bit timid and likened my chances to placing well in the race to similar odds of the University of North Texas beating Alabama in football the same weekend.  The spread in Vegas for that game was 45 points. I would also…

UTA Bike Thefts Prompt Bait Bike Use
Campus police set traps for bicycle thieves
By Bruce Felps
Careful what you steal on the University of Texas at Arlington campus, there, thieves.

Six purloined bicycles so far during September — five in one day, and that’s a little over-kill — prompted campus police to go all covert on criminals.

The force introduced two bikes equipped with GPS transmitters into the general bicycle population. Steal one, Mr. or Ms. Filcher, and appear on a tracking screen near assistant UTA police chief Rick Gomez. …

Why do we ride? I was reminded during Pride
David Taffe            www.dallasvoice.com
I participated in the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade for the first time in many years, riding my bike with the Lone Star Ride Fighting AIDS group. Along the route, a young man reminded me why we’ll ride this coming weekend.

As we proceeded down Cedar Springs Road, the bike riders made circles and loops because it was too hard to stay on a bike behind the walkers and the Riderless Bike that is walked in memory of those we have lost to AIDS. Along the sidelines, parade-goers held out their hands to give us victory slaps. Keeping balance, riding a straight…

Study: Bikes Hit More Pedestrians Than Previously Thought
gothamist.com
In the ongoing bike lane debate (now with added bike shares!) there always seems to be a little old lady who complains about being rundown by packs of rascally rogue bikers. But as much as they complain, there really wasn’t much data available regarding how many bicyclist/pedestrian accidents actually occur. And there still isn’t. But a new study from bike report happy Hunter College shows that there are definitely more collisions…
