About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

‘Excitement On a Well Beaten Path’ Southern Tier East to West

By S. Crocker | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Marfa TX – Valentine TX

Wednesday May 24, 2023 Woke at Cosmico RV park before sunrise. Too bad because my next stop is Valentine TX and there’s a whole bunch of nothing to do there. Cosmico is a neat park with all kinds of camping options from teepees to pastel travel trailers. Dutch hot tubs, rustic outdoor showers. Id definitely come back here if I ever get out this way again!

Figuring to drop in to Valentine late in the day, I got coffee at a shop in town, then got coffee and a burrito at another place, then returned to Cosmico, had a coffee, then packed up, then had another coffee. Thats a lot of coffee!

Finally hit the road about 11, and stumbled across the local grocery store. Out in these parts, if you find a store that has fruit… you stop for it ’cause you don’t know when you’ll find more. Soon, another half hour gone. (Half of that stuffing my face in Valentine TX – Sierra Blanca TX Thursday May 25, 2023 Busted camp early. Didn’t want to get caught ‘doing nothing’ out behind the library, lol!

Lots of flat and straight desert, passed through Van Horn TX. There has to be at least 20 hotels there, but no restaurants. Weird. Ended up having lunch in the gas station deli. Food was good.

Sierra Blanca has a nice city park where they allow cyclist overnight camping, so there we are! …the parking lot with watermelon, strawberry, oranges, lol!)

Ok, now we are off.

Got to Valentine about 3 and… you ever make the mistake, when you were little, of …

Schiff and Roberge win Gravel Locos 150

By Jackie Tyson | www.cyclingnews.com

Carolin Schiff takes three-up sprint to win women’s title in Hico, Texas

German Carolin Schiff sprinted from a four-rider group to win the women’s division at Gravel Locos 150, while Canadian Adam Roberge took a solo victory on the men’s side.

Schiff, who won the 200km The Traka in late April, edged women’s defending champion Marisa Boaz at the line, with Justin Barrow’s stretch leaving her in third. Katie Kantzes faded at the end for fourth, just five seconds behind the podium trio, who finished in the overall top 30.

The four women stay together most of the day, with the final separation in the …

Adam Roberge wins Gravel Locos but was flamed for using actual tactics

Matt Hansen | cyclingmagazine.ca

Canadian used his legs as well as brain to ride to victory

Canadian Adam Roberge won the Gravel Locos 150 in Hico, Texas on Saturday but some are saying that he didn’t…pull enough. Roberge used tactics that would be seen in road races, which, according to some, don’t fit in with the so-called “spirit of gravel.”

After the race, he took to Instagram to defend himself.

“I cannot help but feel that I am being unfairly singled out for using tactics that all cyclists implement to a certain level,” Roberge posted. “Like any sport, gravel requires a blend of physical, technical and tactical skills. Suppose we choose to value physical and technical abilities alone. In that case, we can organize gravel time trials. When we participate in …

Texas 4000: Ride for a Reason

By Ava Motes | alcalde.texasexes.org

It seemed like just yesterday that Selle James, a third-year journalism major, walked into her first Monday night meeting for Texas 4000 for Cancer, where the posted countdown to her Summer 2023 ride read over 500 days. But as Day Zero drew nearer, James says she could see the passage of time—not in the months she spent preparing for departure, but in her immense growth as a biker, leader, and cancer advocate since she became an official Texas 4000 rider in December 2021.

Texas 4000 for Cancer is a UT-based organization supporting cancer research and prevention through a 4000-mile summer bike ride from Austin, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska. As the longest charity bike ride in the world, Texas 4000 raises thousands of dollars each year, which is then distributed to cancer research initiatives and other …

Parkwood homeowners in Harlingen oppose trail project; argue third phase would cut into backyards

By Fernando Del Valle | myrgv.com

HARLINGEN — Some Parkwood subdivision homeowners are standing up against the city’s proposed third phase of the Arroyo Colorado Hike and Bike Trail, arguing the 6-foot-wide asphalt strip would cut across parts of their backyards.

For years, Harlingen officials have been planning to build a 1.1-mile stretch from McKelvey Park to Hugh Ramsey Nature Park as part of a project aimed at connecting the city’s trail system.

Last month, City Commissioner Michael Mezmar, who stands against the project, told commissioners officials have proposed the …

Harris County Precinct 3 Rethinking Edgewater Park

by Bob Rehak | reduceflooding.com

There’s been a lot of water under the I-69 bridge since Harris County acquired the old privately owned Edgewater Park on the San Jacinto West Fork almost five years ago.

The county intended to start construction of a new bigger, better, public park with more amenities in 2019. The idea: turn floodway and floodplain land into a community asset that would improve the community without exacerbating flooding.

Reportedly, however, pushback from Forest Cove residents over rerouting parts of Hamblen Road delayed the project. Then the City of Houston pushed back, too, on permitting for some buildings. Then came redistricting wars, budget battles, and a public-input session to determine what the community wants in Edgewater Park. Let’s first look at some pictures of the park and then review the new features. …

The Houston Parks Board is working with Harris County Precinct 3 to develop the West Fork Greenway and connect it to the Spring Creek Greenway. The map below shows the trail it will take from Woodland Hills Drive to the freeway. …
