About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A slight increase in distance – April 14th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 14, 2011 by Rick AnkrumApril 14, 2011

When I started my evening ride I was not sure I could go the same distance I went yesterday because the sky was overcast and I thought the daylight would disappear sooner. But not too long into the ride the overcast sky broke and the sun started to shine through enough for me to think maybe I could not only match yesterday but maybe go a little farther. So I was able to ride 23.11 miles versus 22.79 yesterday. This was not that much of an increase but I will take it. I did not ride as fast as yesterday with today’s average sheet at 14.9 mph.

I almost did not ride across Lake Houston  on FM1960 because of the debris on the shoulders. There is ice storm aggregate from February and tree limbs along with the usual glass. Maybe the City of Houston will schedule a sweeper. Tomorrow is a rest day so that I can be ready for Saturday’s ride.

I was able to ride 2 miles farther – April 13th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 13, 2011 by Rick AnkrumApril 13, 2011

I was able to ride 2 miles farther this evening than on Monday. This was a combination of an earlier start and .7 mph faster average speed. Traffic on the drive home was helpful in getting home quickly so I was able to begin the ride at 6:15. The 22.79 miles is the longest weekday evening ride so far this year. The weather was friendly for riding: 78 degrees when I left, clear skies and a light to calm breeze. I saw one other rider on McKay Causeway on FM1960 over Lake Houston.

The day off helped in getting the higher average speed. Also I wanted to get home with enough daylight left so that I could put the bikini top on my Jeep Wrangler. I made it but I had to finish putting the top on in the dark. With all of the dry weather and warming temperatures it was time to drive with the top off.
