About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A spring time bike ride in the country was… – April 2nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 2, 2011 by Rick AnkrumApril 2, 2011

A spring time bike ride in the country was the theme for today’s ride. There were a small smattering of wildflowers but no Blue Bonnets on the route I was on. I did see a number of other bikers west of Splendora and by Grangerland. Sometimes I have to remind myself when I ride today’s route that I am only 2o miles from the Houston city limits but the surroundings are pure East Texas. There are plenty of tall pine trees with some occasional cattle and horses. I like this route because the traffic is usually light and the roads have nice shoulders and smooth pavement. Today I found out that a section of FM 1314 east of SR 242 had been widened and the asphalt was nice and smooth. The shoulder had been widened some. The major change was to add a center lane.

I found some more remnants of the string wrapped around the big ring on the crank. I removed this last evidence of the troublesome string. The chain lube I use can be messy so I have wiped down the rear rim. The only reason I am using it is because I do not want to remove the chain without the proper tool and pin for the Shimano chain. My preferred chain lube is Gulf Wax paraffin. It is not messy and when you touch it there is no mess. You have to lube the chain more often and it is best to use a quick link of some type. So I am waiting for the chain to show some wear and then replace it.

Today’s weather was very comfortable for riding. The 70 degrees at the start was fine and the 82 at the finish was not bad. Humidity was fairly low considering the cloud cover. Wind was only 7 mph from the north away from home.

This was the first long ride since my dog crash back on March 19th. Only one dog encounter and the dog was not really committed to chasing for more than 40 to 50 ft. I was watching for him but he was in a place I was not looking at. A 22 mph sprint quickly escaped him and a following pickup truck probably helped.

Cycling – Beware the Rides of March!
by donbynum
OK, yeah I know, I owe Bill Shakespeare an acknowledgement.  Thanks Bill.

After having a 300 mile month in February I set out thinking maybe I could do 400 in March.  Well, OK, I did.  401.11 miles to be exact. The 400 miles is not what made it such a great month.  It was what rides got me there that made the month.

On March 2nd, Gil Jones and I, celebrating Texas Independence Day and our own birthday, were joined by John Chalmers and Don Senzig for a great 83 mile loop starting in Llano, heading out RR2323 to US87 (near Fredricksberg) then north on US87 to RR152 where we turned east and rode to Castell, took a break, and then…

Striders Duathlon oldest Texas run-bike-run event

SAN ANGELO, Texas — A number of people have asked about the upcoming Striders Duathlon, which will take place on April 17. The primary questions were, “How hard is it?” and “What’s the course like?”

Cat 2 Upgrade!
by Ken
Meow.
After the Fayetteville Stage Race, I counted up my points to find that I had 29 points! I needed 25 to upgrade to 2’s, but didn’t know if I was completely reading.

I was originally concerned that I needed more time in 3’s in order to be prepared for the P/1/2 races. After talking to Chris from Woolly Mammoth (who is a 2), he convinced me that if I upgraded as soon as possible, then I…

No Loose String on This Ride – March 31st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 31, 2011 by Rick AnkrumMarch 31, 2011

No loose string on this ride. With clear skies, 71 degrees and a clam wind this ride went smooth. I wore a long sleeve jersey because the sun was going down and it felt cool even if it was not in the 60’s. The weather was supposed to be like a lion to match the saying. I am looking forward to April and the warmer weather. I plan to get more miles in but time will tell on that.

My Garmin Edge 500 is performing great now that I know how to export the data.

March mileage update:

  • March miles 301.49
  • YTD miles 826.67
  • 3 year average miles for March 337.4
