About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Today’s ride was different since… – March 12th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 12, 2011 by Rick AnkrumMarch 12, 2011

Today’s ride was different since I was not riding by electric light but was wearing sunglasses. As a result I was able to see many sights that I could in the dark. I could see the red bud trees, Bradford pear trees and azaleas were blooming signaling that spring is just a few days away. In addition I determined that I am not in condition to ride heading into a stiff wind. While the wind was generally 10 mph the south the 23 mph gusts were another story. You can see on the speed chart that when I was riding south or southeast my speed dropped dramatically, sometimes in the single digits when a particularly strong gust came at me. Considering that it has been a couple of weeks since I rode this distance on the road bike I can see that the 13 – 15 mile MTB rides are not real conditioning events. With DST beginning in the wee hours tomorrow I can start putting more road miles on.

Temperature (IAH station): 77 degrees, wind 10 mph south, mostly cloudy skies. My weather station: 80 degrees, wind 4 mph east, mostly cloudy skies.

During today’s ride I saw two groups of other riders on FM2090 around the 21 mile mark. The first group of three were recreational riders and the second group of 6 plus one dropped rider were much more serious and faster.

I stopped two times to adjust my saddle. Last Saturday I adjusted the pitch of the saddle but I did not tighten the screws enough so when I started out today the saddle moved and I readjusted it. I did not get it right so I stopped two times to attempt to dial it in. My last attempt in Splendora was correct. The Motobecane Le Champion is a great ride and the carbon frame is smooth over the many bumps. I hope to ride 25 miles or so tomorrow.

I was thinking of going to the Raven’s Revenge ride in Huntsville but I calculated the fuel cost plus entry fee and changed my mind. With the run up in gasoline prices I suspect other people may be making the same decision.

March mileage update:

  • March miles 108.15
  • YTD miles 633.33
  • 984 miles on Motobecane Le Champion since I purchased it

Every March in Washington, D.C., hundreds of bicycle advocates and industry leaders convene for the National Bike Summit. It’s a chance to share lessons and best practices in advocating for bicycling, but, more importantly, to make bicycling better through the only way possible: asking.

LBJ 100 Volunteers Needed
URGENT:  We have lost a couple of Traffic Directors and SAG (Support and Gear) Drivers for our LBJ 100 on March 26. These are key positions on
this event.  If you have a vehicle (SUV or pick-up) that could be used as a SAG vehicle for hauling bike riders back to a marshaling point, please call Nolan Kuehn (210-355-2645 or email mailto:nolank@gvtc.com) to volunteer, or get more info.  He would love to talk to you. Traffic Directors will be stationed at key turn points, directing certain riders when and where they should make their turns.  Once the riders have passed that point, the Traffic Directors job is finished.  He/she can then concentrate on eating the Kiolbassa sausage to be served at the post-ride meal.

BikeDenton at NAHBS 2011
from Bike Denton by bikedenton
I recently went to Austin for the sixth annual NAHBS, the North American Handmade Bicycle Show. It was a hyper-sensory experience that no blog post, video, or photo gallery could synthesize. The handshakes and conversations seemed like a delight for the builders who spend much of their time working in solitude. …

La Primavera – Lago Vista Race Report
from Mike’s Bike Blog
Saturday
The stage was set for an epic race and for some it probably was. You see the temperature at the 8am start was right around freezing and the clouds looked threatening. The start of the 35+ 4/5 race was with dry roads except for one puddle but that soon changed after lap 1 when the heavens opened and it started to rain. Our pace wasn’t going to set…
