About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Changed Bikes To See If That Avoided Rain. It Almost Worked!

Texbiker.net Posted on May 15, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMay 15, 2023

The Giro d’Italia was on a rest day but after all of the recent rain the fog was thick this morning so I waited until 10:02 AM to start today’s bike ride. I decided to ride my Lynskey Helix bike to see if that would keep me from getting rained on. That almost worked. I needed 331 miles to reach my goal for May of 750 miles so I looked for a northerly route that I haven’t rode in awhile. I remembered the Kingwood – FM1314 NW to McQueen Road route where the last time I rode April 11, 2022 was just over 41 miles. I changed some early streets in Kingwood and added a loop through Brooklyn Trails to beef up the mileage and biked 43.2 miles. A few more 40+ mile rides and I will narrow the deficit. I have a shorter window because of the Memorial Day and my grandson graduating from high school. I now need 287 miles to hit my goal. I’m at 19.1 days of riding 24.2 miles per day versus today being the 15th day of the month. Not biking yesterday due to rain didn’t cost me too many days ahead.

Watching the sky I saw blue with some clouds. As I turned onto Old Sorters Road with about 11 miles to go I thought this ride would be rain free but I didn’t say that out loud. Good thing! The left turn onto Briar Berry Lane was sunny but I start feeling and seeing rain. I hoped the sun meant it wouldn’t last long or get stronger and when I changed from Briar Berry Lane to another street it stopped. A sigh of relief. Changing bikes might have done the trick. After finishing at 1:19 PM I looked at the radar and rain was not too far away to the southwest. Overall weather: Start 76 degrees, humidity 96%, dew point 74.5, overcast, wind E 6 mph; Finish 84 degrees, humidity 73%, dew point 74.7, overcast, wind SE 9 mph. The humidity got me almost as wet as riding in the rain.

Ride history on this route shows an average distance of around 41 miles. I rode a number of different bikes on the 9 rides. Today was the longest distance.

I forgot about the Strava starred segment on FM 1314 heading NW but when it popped up on the Bolt computer screen I increased my effort. My quick glance at the screen led me to believe I was behind my personal record but looking again I was ahead by a few seconds. The effort improved my overall average speed to 14.8 mph with a little help from the tailwind. The segment crossed through two traffic lights but I managed to ride through on green until the last one at Cumberland Blvd. where one segment ended but the one continued to Old Houston Road. It looked like I stopped for the light before the end but Strava shows I completed it. There was another segment the opposite direction into the wind but I didn’t a result on it. The results from these segments: 2nd fastest time on 1314 – Stripes to Shell (9:32) and 2nd fastest time on Stripes-to_OldHoustonRd (22:06). Link to my AXS.SRAM.com ride report data. I have been part of fitness, running and exercise as long as I can remember. At a younger age it was called “playing,” even when it meant running or riding a bike in a race around the block. Games were almost always associated with running or throwing or climbing something. There were not many of the group that were considered overweight. We were always moving to burn off extra calories.

Looking at how technology and liability issues have changed how youngsters and adults exercise in present day, it is easy to see why overweight and obesity are problems today. My first bike was a blue and orange ACE bike that must have weighed 25 pounds. It had one speed. If you wanted to go faster you had to pedal faster. If you wanted to pedal up a hill, it often required standing up and using …

Maybe A Paddle Bike This Week?

Texbiker.net Posted on May 14, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMay 14, 2023

This was a wet week for bike rides. I think of April being a wetter month but May is a challenger. Tuesday was shortened by rain, Wednesday was a washout and Saturday I got caught in rain twice. Sunday was another rainout. I made up for the Sunday rain after church watching stage 9 of the Giro D’Italia, the men’s and women’s UCI XCO MTB races, the also wet and neutralized Tour de Hungary, and the Itzulia Women race. On the upside I rode 188.87 miles and maintained a small cushion over the pace to reach my 750 mile goal for May. I was on the bike 5 days out of seven. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia 3 times and Lynskey Helix 2 times. The average ride was 37.77 miles. The longest was 44.78 miles.

I’ve done 11 May bike rides so and need 331 miles to reach my 750 mile goal, over halfway to there. The average ride was 38.14 miles and the longest was 44.78.

Got Soaked Twice Riding Brooklyn Trails – Atascocita – Huffman But Who’s counting

Texbiker.net Posted on May 13, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMay 13, 2023

It was an early start on today’s bike ride as I wanted to ride before the forecasted rain arrived. I wasn’t sure how far the ride would go but some miles is better than no miles. Aboard my Cervelo Caledonia bike it began at 8:24 AM (in the video I give the wrong date, it is 2023 not 2024) and within a few yards I felt a light mist. As I say in the video at that point I thought the ride might be just around the block but I kept riding. The route was cobbled together as I pushed on with fits of a light rain and then no rain, dry streets and then wet streets. Entering Woodridge Forest my thinking was to get to 10 miles which I consider an “official” ride. I rode to Brooklyn Trails and back to a different entrance into Woodridge Forest. Crossing Northpark Drive after motioning the car beside me to move forward to trigger the traffic light I rode through North Woodland Hills, Bear Branch, and Kings Forest. This encouraged me that I could maybe get more miles than expected. I was riding along Kingwood Drive when the rain started falling heavily. With no place to get out of the rain I pedaled on the greenbelt crossed Kingwood Drive into Town Center and found an overhang at one of the stores to wait for the heavy rain to slow or stop.

After a few minutes the rain slowed and I gingerly moved to the next store and paused another couple of minutes to be sure the rain had slowed. Back on the street I rode south to Kingwood Greens on wet roads. On W Lake Houston Parkway the pavement was wet but no rain. With the route not resembling anyone that I rode in the past I took Kings River Drive and Atascocita Shores Drive to FM 1960 intending to cross FM 1960, ride through Walden and head back to Kingwood before more rain arrived. I pulled under the pump canopy at the unopened Shell gas station to decide where to ride. Looking at the sky I made the decision to go over Lake Houston and ride as I do most Saturdays to Old Atascocita Road and FM 2100. I started seeing other cyclists on FM 1960 and Fairlake Lane wondering if they rode in the rain or missed it.

Up to this point the wind was out of the SE and a headwind. I was ready for some tailwind and biking north on FM 2100 it arrived. East of Atascocita Shores Drive the roads were dry and they were like that on the return ride. I made the left turn at FM 1960 and Atascocita Shores Drive and the sky looked wet ahead. That’s when I decided to not ride through Walden and take Farmingham to Pinehurst Trail Drive and head back to Kingwood. What had looked like a short ride had now turned into one exceeding the 24.2 mile daily goal. At FM 1960 four cyclists were on the other side waiting for the light to change. We waved as we passed. Not long after riding by the library on Pinehurst Trail the wind changed to the NW and the temperature dropped several degrees. Just what a wet cyclist needed. I picked up the speed hoping the body heat would offset the chilly wind. As I got closer to W. Lake Houston Parkway the rain came down. I took the greenbelt lane north over the river hoping the trees would block some of the rain but they didn’t do much and I was soaked again. In Kings Harbor I took shelter in the parking garage for a few minutes to wait for the rain to slow or stop. That didn’t take too long and I rode back on the street. I followed the usual route from there to home with light rain falling most of the way and finished at 11:39 AM. One soaked cyclist. I will wash the Cervelo and hope the next ride is not as wet as this one.

With all the rain and wet roads I had these Strava segment results: PR on Kris Spraggins Memorial Route (2:16) and PR on North by Northpark (1:44). Those were early in the ride.

Weather summary: Start 78 degrees, humidity 83%, dew point 72.8, overcast light rain, wind SE 10 mph; Finish 69 degrees, humidity 94%, dew point 67.4, rain, wind N 13 mph gusts 21 mph. My kit was shorts, short sleeve jersey and arm sleeves.

With all of the cobbled together streets I had to come up with a name for the route. I consider something with rain in it but went a descriptive location name, Brooklyn Trails – Atascocita – Huffman. I doubt that I can remember the street combination again so this may be a one ride route unless I upload the route to my Bolt computer.
