About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Back to back riding days… – January 23rd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 23, 2011 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 23, 2011

Back to back riding days this month are a rarity but I did manage to get two in a row by riding today. To top it off I rode my Motobecane 700HT MTB on real dirt. I did not think I would get to ride today because the  temperature was not to 60 degrees when I normally leave but we ate lunch first and watched a TV show and the degrees made it to 60. The mostly cloudy skies and solid 13 mph east wind did not do much to make it feel warm though. I did not have a lot of time so I stuck to a shorter route and went on the dirt trails beside the drainage bayou. Thankfully the dirt has dried out some but the numerous horse hoof marks made riding difficult at times. Not many other riders out today so I was on my own. The weather for the next several days will not favor out door rides so the windtrainer is in the picture.

Squirrels were abundant… – January 22nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 22, 2011 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 22, 2011

Squirrels were abundant in the woods surrounding the the trails I rode today. I could not tell if they were searching for nuts or still hiding some. With the cold weather they must be raiding the pantry. Last night the temperature got down to 29 degrees and I was not sure if it would warm up enough to go riding but it made it to 64 degrees when I left on the ride. By the time I got back the temperature was 60 but the clear blue skies and light 8 mph breeze made for a great ride. I saw two other riders. One was dressed like me (windbreaker and leg warmers) but the the other one has a short sleeve jersey and bike shorts. He had to be chilly. I had two long sleeve jerseys under the windbreaker and full finger gloves. I was very comfortable even when I was in full shade.

Riding the Motobecane 700HT MTB with the full knobby tires takes a lot more effort than riding my road bike. The knobby tires add a lot of resistance and the low gearing makes riding over 18 mph difficult. his contrasts greatly with the two windtrainer sessions this week due to the cold weather.

I am hoping to go on an organized ride next Saturday but the long range weather thinks a new cold front will be moving through. I am ready for some serious road miles. I may be able to go on a ride tomorrow with the temperature supposed to reach 65 degrees. I am not sure if I will get to 200 miles for the month.
