About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

‘International Ride of Silence’ returns to the Permian Basin for 17th year

by: Zachary Bordner | www.yourbasin.com

MIDLAND COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- All who legally share the road are invited to the 17th Annual Permian Basin “Ride of Silence,” with bicyclists being the main focus, to raise awareness of cyclists on the road and mourn the cyclists that have been killed by motorists.

The ride will consist of 12 miles, going no faster than 12 miles per hours, and stopping at Ghost Bikes to pay respects.

On the third Wednesday of May, at 7 PM around the world, cyclists will take to the roads in a silent protest of the carnage taking place on the streets.

Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas in 2003 after endurance cyclist Larry …

‘Excitement On a Well Beaten Path’ Southern Tier East to West

By S. Crocker | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Burton TX – La Grange TX

Wednesday May 10, 2023 Another doozy of a rainstorm last night, fortunately very little wind. That would have been unpleasant for me!

Id hung the hammock under a 10×12 pavilion, which only keep out the rain that falls straight down.

Rain didn’t stop until about 10 before I finally scurried out and started packing. There was a 1/2 inch of water in my space so I moved all my bags into the next spot that had a table high and dry.

Got on the road out of the park at 11, navigated the hissing deer (doesn’t that mean they may attack?), the herd of squealing feral hogs, and hit the road.

Join us for Bike to Work Day: Friday, May 19

Ciyt of Houston Planning Department

Bike to Work Day is a national event that occurs every May during National Bike Month . The City of Houston is hosting the Bike to Work Day, our annual downtown ride and celebration will be held on Friday, May 19. We are challenging Houstonians to rethink how we commute to the places we live, work, and play during the month of May.

We are excited to continue the tradition and continue to motivate the community to increase active transportation. Studies have shown that cycling is good exercise, increases endorphins, and causes the brain to function better.

Riders will meet at 7:15 a.m. at the EaDo Bike Company, at 912 Saint Charles Street
The ride will begin at 7:30 a.m.
Participants will ride to to City Hall (approximately 3.7 miles).
At approximately 8 a.m., Planning Department and Mayor Sylvester Turner (or his designee) will address the riders to emphasize the importance of multimodal transportation, and the strides we have made in the City to make cycling safer.

If you can’t join us, we challenge you to ride your bicycle to work or any destination of your choice on May 19 or another day during bike month. If you do, take a picture and tag the Houston Bikeways social media with the hashtag #BTWD2023. Join in the Bike Month and #BTWD2023 conversation at:

‘Excitement On a Well Beaten Path’ Southern Tier East to West

By S. Crocker | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Navasota TX – Burton TX: Yegua Creek Park Tuesday May 9, 2023 Packed up and shipped out to an even more grey morning than previous days.

I got caught in a thunderstorm and hid under a tree to get out of the wind and lightning. When the rain let up a bit, I hit the road again. Then I saw two giant lightning bolts hit the ground in the direction I was traveling and I said nope. I dove under the cover of a (closed) store at Weiss for a couple hours. While killing time waiting for the rain to pass, I researched into my destinations and found that nothing within my range is a viable option. (Closed, or crazy expensive) So I cut today extremely short and stopped in at Yagua park. Nice place managed by the Corps of Engineers.

Soft Front Tire, Switched Bikes, Flirted With Storm

Texbiker.net Posted on May 9, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMay 9, 2023

Pausing the live video of stage 4 on the Giro d’Italia I went to get ready for today’s bike ride. Earlier I checked the weather radar and saw a big block of rain southwest of Houston. I thought I might have enough time to bike at least 24.2 miles to not lose ground on my goal for May. I filled my water bottle and put it in the Cervelo’s cage and squeezed the front tire. It was soft but not flat. I haven’t ridden it since Saturday and fixed a front tire flat on May 4th. I switched to the Lynskey Helix but forgot the water bottle. (a backup bike is great) I rolled away on the ride at 9:45 AM with an overcast sky, 96% humidity and a 7 mph breeze. I planned to ride south through Atascocita and Walden, stop at FM 1960 to check the radar and if it looked okay then ride east over Lake Houston. As I reached the Kings River Drive on W. Lake Houston I heard thunder for the first time. It was beginning to look like my plan would not work. Riding on Upper lake Drive I felt light rain and heard more thunder. I made the decision to head back to Kingwood rather than ride on and probably get soaked or caught waiting for the storm to pass. I picked up the pace trying to beat the approaching storm. Back across the river I rode beside W. Lake Houston Parkway under some trees which block some of the light rain. I waited to cross Kingwood Drive hoping the rain wouldn’t strengthen and rode behind HEB setting a Strava 2nd fastest time on New HEB Alley (1:28). From there it was about 2 miles to home and the end of the ride. I knew it was close as I rode on Tree Lane when the wind kicked up and the temperature dropped. I made it home by 11:09 AM with only light rain. About 15 minutes later the storm arrived. I rode 18 miles which was less than I planned but better than zero miles. For some solace the stage 4 cyclist also rode in the rain but they didn’t quit like I did. I lost a little of the daily miles I was ahead on my goal but still have a cushion of 12.09 days versus today being the 9th. Maybe the weather on Wednesday will be better.

Bicyclist hit, killed by tow truck driver who may have been speeding on Beechnut, Houston police say

abc13.com

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston police say they believe speed may have played a factor in a crash that killed a bicyclist in southwest Houston.

Witnesses say they saw a wrecker driver speeding at about 9 p.m. on Beechnut near Braewick before crashing into a man on his bike.

"Everyone on this street speeds a lot. I’ve got my family, and it’s not good. I may have to move because everybody is speeding, mainly the tow trucks," Javier Melendez said.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The tow truck driver remained at the scene.

There is no word yet on possible charges.

‘Space City Sweeper,’ tasked with cleaning Houston’s bike lanes, back on streets after becoming clogged with debris

Adam Zuvanich | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

The $147,000 miniature street sweeper purchased last year by the City of Houston broke down after a few uses and had to be sent back to the manufacturer for repairs. City workers now pre-clean bike lanes of heavy debris before using the machine.

As the City of Houston gradually expands its network of bicycle lanes, it purchased a miniature street sweeper last year so it could keep those lanes clean.

The task has proven to be difficult for the Madvac LS175, which Houston Public Works dubbed as the “Space City Sweeper” in response to a community naming contest. The machine became clogged with dirt and debris after its first few uses last fall and had to be sent back to the manufacturer for repairs, according to public works spokesperson Erin Jones.

The mini sweeper returned from a months-long hiatus in April and has since …
