About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Faltering Bearcats Send Me to the Trails – November 27th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 27, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 27, 2010

Based on the overnight temperature near freezing I was not expecting to get to ride today but around 2:30 the temperature made it to 65 degrees on my weather station with clear blue skies. I had been watching the Ohio State vs. Michigan football game and Ohio State seemed to have the game under control. So I switched over to the University of Cincinnati vs. UConn football game. My Alma mater, University of Cincinnati, was not fairing so well against UConn. It has been a tough year for the Bearcats. The last three seasons have been beyond belief but the string seems to be broken this year. With that sad note I decided a ride on the bike trails on the Motobecane 700HT MTB was called for.

It was cool in the shade and the breeze of 4 mph seemed to be a little stronger with the chilly bite it had. Fortunately I had dressed warm enough with leg warmers, two long sleeve jerseys, and my wind breaker jacket. Full finger gloves were needed as well. The trail route I chose was different form the one I ride when it is dark since I can go on more of the trails when it is daylight. I did come upon two other serious MTB riders (my definition: helmet and an actual MTB).

This was a nice break from putting up Christmas decorations also. Tomorrow the weather is supposed to warm up to 67 degrees and clear skies. I hope to go for a road ride then.

Today’s ride information:

  • November miles 293.05 (I was not expecting to make t to 300 for November. This will help get me to the 5,000)
  • YTD miles 4896.02

Daily News Roundup November 26th – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on November 26, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 26, 2010

I do not include much news from the BMX scene but this being a slow news week and this big event in Tulsa warrants some attention. It is interesting to me that some of the riders are in their late 30’s and can make a living on the pro circuit. Even though this takes place in Tulsa one of the big riders is from Fort Worth.

The following post mentions the cold front that caused me to stay inside today. Well almost inside. I did visit two big box stores to check out the Black Friday deals but not at some hour in the early AM. I waited until 10:30AM and the crowds were thin as the parking lots were too. No deals were worth buying either.

Daily News Roundup November 25th – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on November 25, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 25, 2010

Happy Thanksgiving Day. May you be blessed and thankful. It is fitting that the amount of news is limited tonight. The second article below raises an important point about what you drink when you ride and after the ride.

Keeping Cool In The Texas Heat
from snowbikes.blogspot.com
If you love to ride your bike in Dallas, Houston or anywhere else in Texas, you’ll ride in any weather – in the wind; in the rain; and, for your diehards, even in the snow. But it’s certain that most of you have a really hard time riding in the heat.

Most individuals would rather ride in the summer than in other times of the year, and there are those who shy away from the heat and humidity that the summer months…
