About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

These Bikes Belong member companies collect a small donation from employees whenever bikes and equipment are sold at a pro-deal discount; this money in turn goes toward the Grant Program.

Bicycle Cities: a plan for car-free communities
from www.peopleforbikes.org
What do you think it would be like to live in, work in, or visit a community where there were no cars? The idea for a Bicycle City was first conceived in the 1990s, and now the idea may be finally coming to life. Bicycle City South Carolina is an eco-friendly, car-free community being built between the mountains and the beach near Columbia, SC. It will feature miles of biking and hiking trails, kayaking on the lake and convenient parking on the edge of the community. …

November – C ycle * D allas: November 2010
from cycledallas.blogspot.com
Houston, Texas installed a bicycle lane network in the mid-1990s (although some say that rather than being planned, it was drawn and quartered by TxDOT, Wilbur Smith Engineering, BikeFed Consulting, and the City of Houston). As Dallas embarks on an equally politicized plan (replacing our 900 lane-mile on-street network), we have much to learn from our Big Brother to the south.

Vastly underutilized, like all ill-conceived bike lane systems, some of Houston’s lanes have since been removed, some have been converted to wide outside lanes (by removing…

DFW Dealer Tour, Day 3
by Bicycle Retailer
On the final day of the tour we rode on scenic multi-use trails and paths (right when we thought that perhaps cyclists in this sprawling metro area were relegated to sharing the road with cars on unmarked streets) as we visited shops in central Dallas. We took the White Rock Creek Trail and a portion of the White Rock Lake loop, riding past swanky…

For the ultimate in final touch preparation for the 2009 cycling or triathlon season, sign up for 24 sessions of leg-burning, lung-searing, wattage based workouts that will turn you in to a relative powerhouse among your peers.

The January – March training protocol starts off immediately hammering your Vo2 system, increasing efficiency and short-to-medium burst power. Then we’ll actually take a step back and mix in some Threshold efforts along with the Vo2max stuff, and finally, in March, we’ll go straight in to Motorpacing and race simulations. LOTS of anaerobic repeats, training your body to respond to the insane demands of road racing and short-course triathlon, as well as getting it to recover as quickly as possible, and prepare for the next heavy intervals. TXBRA racers, this program is perfect for your early season training and race preparation. Hills will seem easier, and you’ll be better able to crack the peloton or bridge to breaks in the races in and around the Hill Country in early 2009.

Heat acclimation gives big cycling performance improvements in cool conditions, study finds
from VeloNews by Ben Delaney

A recent study by human physiology researchers at the University of Oregon found that huge physiological gains could be achieved in trained cyclists by doing 90-minute easy rides in high heat for 10 days.

Before the testing, the researchers expected to find improvements in the hot-weather performance of Cat. 1 and 2 cyclists after a heat-acclimation program. But what surprised them was…
