About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

October 27th Bike Ride – Hot Before the Cold Arrives

Texbiker.net Posted on October 27, 2010 by Rick AnkrumOctober 27, 2010

Today’s temperature either set a record or was very close. Obviously 91 degrees in late October is not normal or the record would be much higher. During today’s ride I was actually perspiring like it was July or August. When I stopped at the Exxon station for a cold Diet Pepsi it felt very good to sit in the shade even though the breeze was there. Due to a different work schedule today I was able to ride over 32 miles on a route I have not been on for awhile. As I was riding on Huffman-Eastgate I noticed how the asphalt paving had “slipped” towards the ditch on the right hand side. I think this is caused by heat and a slick sub-base. There were places where there was a 4″ to 6″ difference in the pavement where the slide was.

Scattered clouds and low humidity (48%) added to the feel of heat. Wind at 5 mph from the south was not a problem. Since I started earlier today I had no problems with unlit joggers. I did meet another biker on FM1960. The new Motobecane is still smooth riding.

Amazon found out why the Shimano Ultegra pedals were not shipping and fixed it. They should get here on Friday so I may be able to install them in time for Saturday’s ride. The Lezyne pump is estimated to arrive on Saturday but after my ride. This may be a Sunday ride thing. I want to put the pump on the bike but not have a reason to use it.

Today’s ride information:

  • October miles 525.02
  • YTD miles 4526.61

10-27-2010 Ride Data

Additional charts, weather and map.

Ride Day 14: Destination Fort Davis TX
Saturday October 23, 2010, 127 miles (204 km) – Total so far: 897 miles (1,444 km)
OCTOBER 23, 2010

Weather was sunny, morning temperature 47, high 72; winds SW 10-20 mph
Fort Davis
As we move east we passed into another time zone today, we’re now operating in Central time as we cross Texas. That pushes everything back an hour and we no longer have to rise at 5:00 am to leave at 6AM because it stays dark until 8:15.

This ride is all about the people we meet and today was no exception. This morning we ate breakfast in Sierra Blanca. A nice young man named Trevor John Rivera, was our waiter. As we talked to him, we learned that he was a high school sophomore and played on his high school football team. Because the schools are so small, they play football with six on a team. His total team consisted of a grand total of 12 players! He played a game last night and unfortunately lost. Because of his work ethic and desire to save money for college, he was hard at work Saturday morning…

by tmcrouch
After some encouragement from a woman named Kari Kehr, I decided to make the trip to Austin Texas for my first LIVESTRONG Challenge.  I met Kari after seeing a cancer sucks. video that was posted on the LIVESTRONG Facebook page.  I found her email as I wanted one of the shirts that were featured in the video, which simply say ‘cancer sucks.’.  From there we exchanged several emails…
