About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

My Week of Biking (April 17 -23)

Texbiker.net Posted on April 23, 2023 by Rick AnkrumApril 23, 2023

I started off the week riding north to Roman Forest Blvd. on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. It was a good ride and I looked forward to riding Tuesday. But weather intervened and I did not ride. Instead I drove to Bike Lane in Shenandoah to browse their bike inventory. Some of the new gravel and MTB’s sported what looked like 52 tooth rear cassette cogs, big as a small dinner plate.

Week bike ride summary
Week Bike Ride Activities April 17 – 23

That day off the bike put me behind on reaching 200+ miles for the week and my 700 mile goal for April. This required 3 consecutive 40+ miles rides to reach my goal. So Wednesday I rode a southern route I haven’t been on in almost 4 years taking me just north of Crosby, TX, and adding 47.53 miles to the week’s total. Thursday’s ride also was over 40 miles with the riding going north and looping through Roman Forest. I rode on a portion of Galaxy Blvd. that was new to me. Friday’s ride returned to the south extending and adding to the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route to Indian Shores Drive. I needed a new name for this route: Atascocita – Walden – Indian Shores Drive. I was now within 36 miles of hitting 200+ for the week. To get there I used my Atascocita – Spanish Cove – Walden route but added numerous extra streets for a total of 37.44 miles, enough to nudge the week’s total to 203.08 miles. I wanted to ride Sunday but the weather didn’t cooperate. Overcast skies, temperature below 60 (my lower threshold) and the threat of rain when I got home from church kept me inside. It wasn’t a wasted afternoon because I watched the men’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège race from Belgium. I watched the women’s race before leaving for church.

While watching the Liège-Bastogne-Liège I worked on my Cervelo Caledonia bike putting on a new Continental Gator Hardshell 700x28c tire on the rear wheel, taking the Continental GatorSkin 700x28c tire from there and replacing the front Continental Gator Hardshell 700x28c tire with 7,156 miles on it. The front tire doesn’t wear as fast as the rear tire and the rear tire was installed on March 3rd at 6213 miles, 943 miles ago. This time I didn’t as much trouble mounting the tires remembering to put the beads in the valley of the rim.

Starting the new week I need 64 miles to reach my 700 mile goal for April. Monday’s weather looks favorable but the following days might be different.

Big ass hills: Lost Maples Campground to Camp Wood

Saturday April 22, 2023, 38 miles (61 km) – Total so far: 1,759 miles (2,831 km) The ACA map said that today’s segment would be difficult. How right they were! I had three big climbs on the agenda for today, but alas a few campers came in late, then started drinking and were a bit noisy. Always happens to me. I didn’t feel as rested as I would have liked, but it did not deter me from getting the job done today. The star gazing last night was incredible and was only topped by a time my wife and I were out in Utah. I saw a few shooting stars! Impressive.

The first climb of the day started pretty much right off the bat after 13 minutes of riding. This was a consistent 10-11 % gradient. Now that may not seem hard and I like to climb, but when you’re on a 90 lb touring bike, climbing becomes a completely different game. On these steep gradients, I can only do about 2-4 mph when climbing this way and at that speed the bike bike is more difficult to keep it going straight. Add in no road shoulder and lots of passing motorcyclists and trucks, and you’ve got a challenge.

I surmounted the first one and then had a few …

The Plan And Goal: Tweaking My Route to Add More Miles

Texbiker.net Posted on April 22, 2023 by Rick AnkrumApril 22, 2023

I needed to bike 36 miles to reach 200+ miles for the week. Thinking of possible routes I chose to ride Atascocita – Spanish Cove – Walden but change up some streets. The previous 3 rides on this route averaged around 35 miles in length so I needed to tweak it some. This route is a variation of the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive. The main difference is the sequence of biking through Walden before Spanish Cove or after. Today I rode to Spanish Cove first along with some changes to lengthen the distance.

4-22-2023 SportTracks Ride History Atascocita-Spanish Cove-Walden
4-22-2023 SportTracks Ride History Atascocita-Spanish Cove-Walden

It began at 10:39 AM with me moving away on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. Changing the starting streets was the first change and going through Woodridge Forest was the next. I took different streets through Bear Branch Village in Kingwood and back onto regular streets getting to Kings River Drive. Combining Kings River Drive and Atascocita Shores Drive got me to FM 1960 without riding through Walden, I would do that on the way back. From there it was the usual roads to Spanish Cove on FM 2100, making the u-turn and heading north to Huffman and FM 1960. Back across Lake Houston, turning left onto Atascocita Shores pointed me to Walden. I rode the typical Saturday streets back to Kingwood and finished at 1:29 PM biking 37.43 miles and meeting the goal for today. The week now totals 203.08 miles and the month 636.65 miles, leaving 64 miles to hit my 700 mile goal for April.

I didn’t expect to see other cyclists with my later start but I saw several. I missed the first pair because my head was down riding into the wind but I caught sight of them as they passed.

The wildflowers are growing in number and colors as you can see in the video.

Wind was strong today from the east and then from the SE. Once I made the u-turn at Spanish Cove it wasn’t fighting me as much. Weather conditions: Start 74 degrees, 47% humidity, dew point 52, fair, wind E 15 mph gusts 24 mph; Finish 77 degrees, 52% humidity, dew point 58, fair, wind SE 14 mph gusts 23 mph.

Link to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report. The 35×13 gears powered most of the ride time: 1:38:28 (24.2 miles) followed by 35×15 gears 49:56 (9.3 miles).

These two maps show the differences between today’s ride and the previous ride on this route. Today’s ride is on the left and March 4th on the right.
