About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Imagine The Shock Seeing It That Cool. I Thought That Was Done Until Fall

Texbiker.net Posted on April 17, 2023 by Rick AnkrumApril 17, 2023

A new week of bike riding starts today. When I woke up this morning the temperature was 46 degrees. I thought we were done with temperatures in the 40’s until fall. While I waited for it to get warmer I watched stage 1 of tour of the Alps, a couple of YouTube channels and ate breakfast. The weather warmed up a little quicker than expected and I got ready for the bike ride. Deciding where to ride I chose my New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst route thinking the railroad crossing into Tavola at Via Principal Parkway would still be closed. It turned out to be open with new concrete replacing the old bumpy asphalt. Wednesday might be a good day to try out that crossing.

The bike for today’s ride was my Cervelo Caledonia. I rolled away at 11:18 AM. I mixed up the streets enough that Strava didn’t match any other rides with today’s choices. I don’t ride this route very often but I do ride the streets on other routes so nothing new. Looking at my past ride history in SportTracks it appears I have two names for the same route: New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Valley Ranch. I may need to combine these two. The distances are similar. Today I rode 33.91 miles putting me at 467.49 miles (67%) of my 700 mile goal for April.

Getting to Roman Forest Blvd. I rode through several Kingwood Villages, Woodridge Forest, Brooklyn Trails, along US59 to Community Drive moving to Loop 494, north to Payne Road and back to US59 and on to Roman Forest Blvd. where I made the u-turn to head back to Kingwood. From the u-turn the roads were the same from several other routes: Valley Ranch Parkway to FM 1314, Old Sorters Road, Briar Berry Lane, into Oakhurst on a couple of streets I don’t use very often. Mills Branch Drive took me to Rock Creek and south over the cobbles before reaching Northpark Drive. Kingwood Place Drive and Kellington got me to US59 and then the u-turn at Kingwood Drive. A short ride on the frontage road to Kingwood Parc to get to Loop 494. At the traffic light I entered Kings Manor and rode back into Kingwood. More side streets and greenbelt belt trail along Kingwood Drive and back to residential streets to finish the ride at 1:50 PM.

With the cooler morning the wind had a chill even though the temperature was in the lower 70’s. I decided to wear a poly short sleeve T-shirt under the long sleeve jersey and wind jacket. I thought the T-shirt might be over doing it but it turned out to be okay. Weather: Start 73 degrees, 37% humidity, dew point 45, partly cloudy, wind E 12 mph; finish 75 degrees, 40% humidity, dew point 42, a few clouds, wind SE 14 mph gusts 20 mph. The stronger wind posed a problem for the ride back to Kingwood but it was not a full headwind. The only places where the wind was hard was when I rode out in the open with nothing blocking or slowing it. Valley Ranch Parkway south of TX 99 was one of those places. Link to my AXS.SRAM.com ride report. I didn’t realize I made 41 Rear Derailleur Shifts. 1:42:41 using the 35×13 gears points to the wind not being much of a problem.

Community celebrates upgrades to Noble E. Young Park in Tyler

By Symone Sheppard | tylerpaper.com

The community gathered at Noble E. Young Park in Tyler on Saturday afternoon to celebrate renovations.

The updated park features new restrooms and a new art mural, a new parking lot and location, a 1-mile long, 8-foot-wide walking trail, picnic tables and benches, a pavilion, a children’s bike park, and an outdoor gym.

Leanne Robinette, director of Parks and Recreations for the City of Tyler, introduced the event and also helped participate in the ribbon cutting. She said she was excited to see this work completed.

“I feel so proud that we were able to do this at a park that really needed some love,” said Robinette. “This park hasn’t been touched in a really long time. It was in bad shape when we …

SAN ANTONIO – Sunday marks the last day of San Antonio Sports’ Fiesta FitFest at UTSA.

Fiesta Fitfest is a new traditional twist on celebrating health and wellness the weekend before Fiesta.

Thousands of people participated in the headline event L’Étape San Antonio, an amateur mass cycling event.

One of the bikers, Deb Godoy, cycled 25 miles of L’Étape San Antonio.

So today my legs decided they were not gonna cooperate. I couldn’t hang on to any draft and I could barely climb. Rode mostly alone as my anxiety was revved up due to the numerous crashes and the amount of ppl who don’t know how to handle a bike. Nonetheless, my nutrition was on point and I did what I could just to finish. Winds were horrible, pushing me all over the road. I prayed and cussed all in the same breath..

Steeper hills: Bastrop to west Austin

Sunday April 16, 2023, 55 miles (89 km) – Total so far: 1,558 miles (2,507 km) Oh boy, I hit steeper hills today. The first 35 miles into Austin from Bastrop was a cakewalk compared to the last 18 miles. The terrain was rolling from Bastrop into Austin and I was in the eastern outskirts of Austin by 10:30. I’ve mentioned before that large cities are always a pain due to the volume of traffic and turns.

Today’s ride through the city was no different. Austin held its largest running event this morning with 15,000 runners and it had closed a bunch of roads. Fortunately, it had just completed by the time I made it downtown. Some big motorcycle race or event must have been going on at a raceway on the eastern side of town because I saw hundreds of motorcyclists and cars all streaming into the racetrack. They were all going east while I was on the other side of the road going west. But it did clog the road due to the police directing traffic for miles.

The roads going into the city from Bastrop were for …

Biking Through the Chill: A 21-Mile Journey in 70-Degree Weather

Texbiker.net Posted on April 16, 2023 by Rick AnkrumApril 16, 2023

Under the cover of darkness a front captured the 85 degree weather and substituted 70 degree weather. I was perfectly happy with the 85 degree weather but made due with the low 70’s in its place for today’s bike ride. Even waiting until 2:02 PM to start the ride didn’t make it any warmer. I took advantage of waiting until then by eating leftover pizza and watching the men’s Amstel gold race from the Netherlands. Then I got my Lynskey Helix bike and headed out to ride the Kingwood Streets & Trails. I set a goal to ride 21 miles (3% of my 700 mile goal for April) and by the time I finished at 3:47 PM I rode 21.49 miles. That finished the week with 234.6 miles, the second highest week so far this year only beat by the 237.49 miles from the week of 3/6/2023. April now stands at 433.57 miles, 62% of the way to that goal. Not too bad considering I’ve missed 4 days of biking in April.

4-16-2023 SportTracks Week Bike Rides Summary
4-16-2023 SportTracks Week Bike Rides Summary

It’s hard to compare rides like today to other rides on Kingwood streets because I mix them up so much. There aren’t many places to get up to full speed for an extended time so I don’t think much about my average speed. I’m glad I wasn’t out on the roads because the front left some strong winds that I felt even amongst all of the Kingwood trees. Weather: Start 73 degrees, 34% humidity, dew point 43, a few clouds, wind N 18 mph gusts 29 mph; finish 75 degrees, 30% humidity, dew point 41, a few clouds, wind N 15 mph gusts 28 mph.

Halfway, I think and variable winds: Carmine to Bastrop

Friday April 14, 2023, 62 miles (100 km) – Total so far: 1,503 miles (2,419 km) It is now Saturday, 4/15 and I am taking a day off. Here’s the write-up for yesterday and since I have time, I can write a bit more.

This was a 50/50 day. First half was tough with terrible roads and the second half had great roads. I am

I slept well at the Round Top RV campground in Carmine. They had one of the best tent pads I have ever set my tent on and I might suggest over similar campgrounds take notice. They had a piece of astroturf as the tent pad. I just had to move off a little debris and I was rewarded with a nice smooth and somewhat cushioned pad. I am sleeping really well in the tent on this trip and find it quite homey. I am glad that I slept better, because I was really tired from the previous day.

I was out of the campground and was looking forward to a waffle at the local market/antique store. Unfortunately, I must have been lied to last evening since they had breakfast tacos, sausage biscuits, and some other stuff. Man, I was dissapointed and ended up getting a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit. I only like cheese on pizzas and there was no way to separate it from the other ingredients. I haad that and some orange juice and was off down the road. I had read that route 237 for the morning portion was not that great and it lived up to its reputation.

For some reason today I was aggitated about everything. I was …
