About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

An Exciting Twist on My Usual Bike Route

Texbiker.net Posted on April 15, 2023 by Rick AnkrumApril 15, 2023

Wow, just a couple of days ago I was seriously considering taking on the Tour de Braz or the Pedal for a Purpose. These rides are epic, but with a catch – the start times were so early that I’d have to wake up at 4:30 in the morning and drive to the start. I mean, that’s crazy early, right? So, I made the tough decision to ditch those rides and sleep in instead. But, let me tell you, that didn’t stop me from getting my biking fix! Today, I came up with a wild and exhilarating idea – to ride my usual Saturday route, but in reverse! I mean, can you even imagine the thrill of taking on those same streets, but in the opposite direction? It definitely required some serious thinking, especially when there were certain roads that I couldn’t exactly ride in reverse. But, boy, was it worth it! My usual routes are so familiar that they practically ride themselves, but riding in reverse required my full attention and kept me on my toes!.

As I got ready after watching the Tour du Jura (France) bike race and eating breakfast I went over the streets and roads once I started. No muscle memory riding today. I rolled away on my Cervelo Caledonia bike at 10:31 AM and too long after that I was biking the opposite direction. Some of the streets going reverse on: Rustic Woods, Kings Crossing, Rebawood, FM 2100, Old Atascocita Road, Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail, Kingwood Greens, Tree Lane, Chanay, and Silver Falls. The reverse route turned out to be longer than the normal route: 34.84 miles today versus around 32 miles. The extra 2 miles came from streets in Kingwood as on the way to Atascocita that normally aren’t part of the ride. I thought those would offset a couple of places where riding in reverse wasn’t possible. I finished at 1:16 PM.

With the 34.84 miles today my week now totals 213.11 miles, my 3rd 200+ mile week this year. I’m 59% of the way to the 700 mile goal for April at 412 miles.

Before sunrise this morning I wasn’t sure about biking today when thunder started and rain not long after that but it didn’t last long. the streets dried by the time I began biking except for a few puddles in the shade. I’ve been wanting 80 degree weather and it finally returned. I overdressed with a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve jersey. I should’ve just wore arm sleeves with the short sleeve jersey. Wind wasn’t a factor today. Conditions at the start and finish: Start 81 degrees, 76% humidity, dew point 73, mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph; finish 87 degrees, 65% humidity, dew point 73, mostly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph.

Legs felt good today powering up some slight inclines that normally are downhills. I captured a Strava 2nd fastest time on Huffman to Old Atascocita Rd (3:20). Link to my AXS.SRAM.com ride report.

The Permian Basin Metropolitan Planning Organization provides update on Wildcatters Trail

NewsWest 9 | www.newswest9.com

The Wildcatters Trail is a bicycle and pedestrian corridor connecting the cities of Midland and Odessa.

MIDLAND, Texas — On March 20, the Metropolitan Planning Organization shared its recent award for Planning Excellence received earlier that month from the Texas Recreation and Parks Society. The award was given to the MPO for its recently completed work on the Wildcatters Trail, a bicycle and pedestrian corridor connecting the cities of Midland and Odessa.

The trail would run east to west and parallel to SH 191 from the Scharbauer Sports Complex to the UTPB Midland Campus, it then would turn southward and parallel to FM 1788 to north of Business 20 where it would turn west toward the main UTPB campus. The entire trail length is about nineteen miles.

In January 2023, the cities of Midland and Odessa both applied for TxDOT grants funds to …

Ferris Wheel And Other Rides On The Route

Texbiker.net Posted on April 14, 2023 by Rick AnkrumApril 14, 2023

After avoiding the FM 1314 intersection in Porter today I decided to ride north thinking the work might be done. It was but moved to Loop 494 at the TX 99 eastbound frontage road intersection. It was not as disruptive there because the traffic is much lower. Before starting the bike ride I watched the final stage of the Giro di Sicilia from Italy and then switched for the last 20km of the Classic Grand Besançon Doubs from France. The temperature warmed up faster than yesterday allowing me to start the bike ride at 10:37 AM, over an hour earlier than yesterday. I finished the ride at 1:15 PM.

Before rolling away on my Cervelo Caledonia I rode 145 miles so far this week and today’s route, Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood usually is 31 to 32 miles setting me up for hitting 200+ miles on tomorrow’s bike ride. Today’s ride came in at 33.06 miles improving the week to 178.26 miles. My month now totals 377.23 miles, 54% of the way to my 700 mile goal. Year to date is 2599 miles. The spread between 2023 YTD miles and 2020, 2021, 2023 increased some now that I rode every day this week.

4-14-2023 SportTracks 1 year Ride History Kingwood-FM1485-Kingwood
4-14-2023 SportTracks 1 year Ride History Kingwood-FM1485-Kingwood

There was a little sun at the start of the ride but the clouds increased during the ride. At times the clouds looked like rain was possible but nothing happened. I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a wind jacket. Once I warmed up about 15 minutes into the ride I thought I overdressed but as the clouds increase the sun left and it felt cooler. I was glad for my wardrobe choices. Overall weather: Start 77 degrees, 68% humidity, dew point 66, mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph; finish 76 degrees, 73% humidity, dew point 67, overcast, wind S 8 mph.

My tender sit bones went away overnight and the Velo Senso TT+ saddle felt good again. I think part of the problem yesterday was the shorts I wore, a pair of Primal Prisma that are over a year old and maybe the padding is shot.

San Jacinto Bayou Greenway segment in Kingwood to offer 2.5 miles of hike-and-bike trails

By Hannah Brol | communityimpact.com

Kingwood residents will soon be able to traverse 2.5 miles of hike-and-bike trails with the opening of a new segment of the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway on April 15.

According to an April 11 newsletter from Mayor Pro Tem Dave Martin—who represents the city of Houston’s District E, which includes Kingwood—the project is a partnership between the Houston Parks Board and the Harris County Flood Control District, which purchased the land to convert it to green space. The segment—which spans 2.5 miles from Woodland Hills Drive to Hamblen Road—goes through a former townhome community, The Riverview Townhomes at Forest Cove, which HCFCD acquired and demolished using their own funds as well as …

Day 39: Silsbee to Merryville, LA: Hospitality

Wednesday April 12, 2023, 54 miles (87 km) – Total so far: 2,004 miles (3,225 km) It was a super easy ride today. Good shoulders with less logging trucks and overall traffic. Pretty flat. Averaged 14 mph for whole trip. Not many towns to pass through so ate lunch against an antique shop wall at 9:45. Stopped for a pic as we crossed into Louisiana along the “No Man’s Land” area. We are being hosted by the Merryville Historical Society folks. They allow us to camp on the covered outdoor stage and the the porches of the small cabin and museum on the property. They greeted us with an overload of fresh snacks and bottled water. They have also fed us an incredible feast of Louisiana cooking: fried alligator, catfish, shrimp, hush puppies, black beans & rice, etouffee, crawfish bake, salad and dessert. We also had the local historian present to give an interesting talk on the history of the area. Wonderful people with wonderful, funny stories. It wa a delightful evening. We will see them again when they serve us breakfast in the morning. Loving this Southern Hospitality!

Day 11: Clint TX to Acala TX

Saturday April 8, 2023, 27 miles (43 km) – Total so far: 218 miles (351 km) I had my niece get me past El Paso. I had no desire to ride through downtown or to ride over the hill to to around and end up on the loop. Not much to recommend Texas road 20, a couple is small towns then mostly agriculture. Thankfully, it’s not very busy.

Day 12: Acala to Frontage Rd exit before Sierra Blanca

Sunday April 9, 2023, 30 miles (48 km) – Total so far: 248 miles (399 km) Another slow day, headwinds again then a long climb to finish the day. I seem to be limited to 3 1/2 to 4 hours or riding for a day. I don’t know if it’s fighting the headwinds and long climb or just conditioning, probable some of both. Went longer up the hill today before I could find a place to camp

Day 13: Frontage road to Van Horn TX

Wednesday April 12, 2023, 47 miles (76 km) – Total so far: 295 miles (475 km) Today was a good day, still windy but a ride wind instead if a headwind. Started with about a mile climb at 4%, then 5 or6 miles of 2 to 3% climbing before if leveled out. Had lunch at the Valero on Sierra Blanca and I highly recommend that, cheap and extremely good. End the day with a mile climb and then the reward was 10 miles down into Van Horn. Planning to take tomorrow off, fix the air mattress and do a little work on the bike.

Houston BCycle set to raise prices, close more stations as bike sharing transitions to Metro

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Christian Aguilera, shop coordinator, tests out a repair on a bike Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023, at the Houston Bike Share office in Houston. Despite $500,000 committed by Metropolitan Transit Authority and an agreement with the nonprofit for a transition to transit officials establishing a bike system, bike share officials said none of the money has come to help with their operations. As a result, rental prices for the bikes will increase, and more stations could be closed, officials said. Jon Shapley/Staff photographer

Hopes for a much-needed infusion of cash from a new partnership with Metro have yet to be fulfilled, leading Houston Bike Share to warn users that prices will increase and the number of available stations will shrink, starting May 1.

The nonprofit that operates the BCycle system of bikes available for checkout at kiosks around the city, “has been unable to complete a partnership agreement,” with Metropolitan Transit Authority, bike share board chairwoman and interim CEO Maya Ford said in an update. Specifically, Ford said Metro has confirmed it would not provide any of the $500,000 transit officials approved to transition bike sharing into the transit agency’s operations.

Metro officials said the …

Correction: The vote on the funding of BCycle stations in Midtown was held by the Midtown Management District, not the Midtown Redevelopment Authority.

Four formerly suspended BCycle stations are back in use in Houston’s Midtown area following a partnership between Houston Bike Share—the nonprofit that operates Houston BCycle—and the Midtown Management District.

The stations are located at the following locations:

Milam Street at Webster Street
Ensemble/Houston Community College rail stop
Austin Street at Gray Street
La Branch Street at Alabama Street

BCycle officials first announced the stations were back in operation at the end of March. As part of …

USAC Weekend #1 & Velodrome Power Update

Stuart Gardner, Program Director Alkek Velodrome | shoutout.wix.com

Alkek Velodrome Power Issues

Unfortunately, last week, a storm hit and the High Voltage Transformer which provides power to the Velodrome has been damaged, possibly to the point it needs to be replaced, I am working with HPARD on that and so far they have been very helpful however it’s not going to be a quick fix. Until the transformer is repaired or replaced we won’t have floodlights so will be doing the following:

A generator will be used to power the tunnel pump (when needed) and officials tower for race day operations.

TNR will now start at 5:45 and conclude before 8pm (Or when it gets dark)

Evening training will also conclude early (Before 8pm)

I know these changes won’t be good news for everyone and …

Southern Tier CoMotion

More hills: Navasota to Carmine

Thursday April 13, 2023, 51 miles (82 km) – Total so far: 1,441 miles (2,319 km) My updates to this may not be as extensive as they have in the past. I am in the thick of the Texas Hill country and I am spending more time on the bike to cover similar distances. I am now also putting out about 2-3 times more effort than I have up to this point. That leaves less time in the evening to update this.

First, sorry no road kill pictures this day. I didn’t sleep real well last night and with yesterday’s efort I was feeling tired all day. My legs were working, but I could tell that I was moving a bit slower. Yesterday I did 3100 feet of climbing in 85 miles and today I did 2700 feet in 51 miles. So, today’s effort was more intense. What made it worthwhile was all the wildflowers that were in bloom along the roadway and in the fileds. They were quite beautiful.

I met 3 east bound riders and …
