About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Mixing Up The Route Streets

Texbiker.net Posted on April 13, 2023 by Rick AnkrumApril 13, 2023

Another bike ride to the south to avoid the traffic mess in Porter. I will try that direction tomorrow to see if the signal work has went away. I decided to switch some of the streets in my Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove route for a little variety and to add a couple of miles to the ride. Most of the different streets were in the early part of the ride, ones I ride on other routes, just not this one. I did add a new street in Kings River from Water Point Trail to Pinehurst Trail Drive. The 11:41 AM start time was later than I wanted but I waited for the temperature to go up a couple of degrees. The weather was about the same as yesterday with a little less wind. I finished the ride at 2:32 PM riding 37.12 miles. This pushed the week total to 145.19 miles. I’m 49% of the way to my 700 mile goal for April. Also my Cervelo Caledonia needs 75 miles to reach 7,000 miles since I bought it last year. The typical ride on this route is about 35 miles so the different streets added 2 miles.

My sit bones were tender from yesterday’s ride on my Lynskey Helix bike with the BiSaddle. I moved the Velo saddle about 1cm forward on the Cervelo before today’s bike ride.

Link to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report. I rode in the 35×13 gears for the majority of the ride: 1:38:01 (24 miles). I usually shifted to the 35×15 at traffic lights and then back to 35×13 once I got going.

Weather: Start 75 degrees, 55% humidity, dew point 57, a few clouds, wind calm; finish 77 degrees, 47% humidity, dew point 55, partly cloudy, wind variable 5 mph. I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey and a wind jacket.

Good day: Silsbee to Shepherd

Tuesday April 11, 2023, 62 miles (100 km) – Total so far: 1,305 miles (2,100 km) Last evening at the Red Cloud RV park, I Dominos deliver food, but it was not up to the standard that I typically get. The portions were a bit smaller than what I was used to. Anyway, I chowed down and ate it all. When preparing the tent for bed, my next door neighbor in an RV invited me over. Lydia is a 90 year old woman who has a front row seat at the park to all the cyclists that come and go there. She was very nice and as we conversed, she invited me in to see her sewing. Yes, I know this sounds odd, but sewing runs in my family and I do like to see what others do.

She was making towels for a church fundraiser and was quite animated about all the details, Even at 90 and living alone, she had good mental acuity and walks the park many times a day. She told me stories of how she offers coffee to all the cyclists that come through. Since I’m not a coffee drinker, I thanked her for the offer. It was getting dark and I was ready to turn in. The park was close to a busy road and some railroad tracks. Fortunately, I brought …

Big day and slight tailwind: Shepherd to Nacasota

Wednesday April 12, 2023, 85 miles (137 km) – Total so far: 1,390 miles (2,237 km) Its late in the day and I got to a hotel in Navasota at about 7:00 PM, so I’m not going to write much. 85 miles was a long way to go and I got held up due to a storm about 20 miles away from Navasota. I waited it out and got back on the road. 10 miles from Navasota, I took a wrong turn and got in bonus miles. Yea!!!

I met a few east bounders including a woman from Australia who was going solo eastward. We traded road information and a few stories and then were on our respective ways. She likes to travel the same way I do and also has had some loneliness. I suggested she …

The Other Side of The Railroad Overpass

Texbiker.net Posted on April 12, 2023 by Rick AnkrumApril 12, 2023

Typically I don’t ride the same general direction two days in a row such as north and north. But today I wasn’t enthused about riding north through the FM 1314 intersection in Porter because the traffic light work messed up the traffic. Thinking of a southern route not repeating yesterday’s route I came up with the Atascocita – Balmoral – W Lake Houston Pkwy – Walden one. The last time I rode to Balmoral was October 13th last year. Since then the railroad overpass construction ended and is open. For today’s ride I would explore the other side of the overpass on Timber Forest Drive riding to W. Lake Houston Parkway and then back to Kingwood. This would help me plan another semi new route for the future where I circle Lake Houston incorporating the Timber Forest Drive railroad overpass to avoid the traffic on W. Lake Houston Parkway from Summerwood to Aerobic Drive.

Before leaving on the bike ride I watched three bike races while eating breakfast and waiting for the temperature to warm up. The races: stage 3 of the Giro di Sicilia from Italy and the men’s and women’s De Brabantse Pijl from Belgium. Riding up the railroad overpass reminded me of the climbs I saw in the De Brabantse Pijl. I’m a flatlander and it doesn’t take much of a grade change to make a hill. I rode the overpass in both directions. It is a rather steep climb in a short distance. The two spikes on both sides of the 20 mile marker in the RWGPS map below are the climbs on the overpass.

The ride began at 11:13 AM on my Lynskey Helix bike. The weather was similar to yesterday and I dressed in the same manner with shorts, long sleeve jersey and a wind jacket. I was a little chilly until I warmed up and when the sun came through the clouds. In the shade the 8 to 9 mph NE breeze felt chilly throughout the ride. The clouds increased as I rode and back in Kingwood I felt a few sprinkles on Kings Crossing Drive but attributed it errant sprinklers somewhere. After I finished the ride at 2:05 I was surprised to hear some thunder and when I checked the radar rain was nearby and started not long after I was home. A near miss. Weather: Start 75 degrees, 62% humidity, dew point 61, a few clouds, wind NE 8 mph; finish 76 degrees, 58% humidity, dew point 60, partly cloudy, wind E 9 mph.

Revisiting the saddle comparison between the BiSaddle on my Lynskey versus the Veo Senso TT+ I rode yesterday on my Cervelo my sit bones vote for the Velo saddle for comfort.

I captured a Strava Local Legend on The Library Sprint on the way back.

8 murders occurred near Dallas trails in 2022, police say. That’s not the whole story.

By Sharon Grigsby | www.dallasnews.com

A little-noticed public safety briefing on the city’s hike-and-bike network turns up many concerns.

A fellow Dallas trails fanatic shared a shocking crime statistic as we recently left a Mountain Creek neighborhood meeting: Eight murders occurred last year on or very near the city’s steadily expanding hike-and-bike network.

That number couldn’t possibly be right. No way would public safety reporters miss a trend like that. It must be the stuff of Nextdoor exaggeration or social media hysteria.

Turns out the eight murders were …

Day 38: Sheperd to Silsbee, TX: Logging Trucks

Tuesday April 11, 2023, 61 miles (98 km) – Total so far: 1,950 miles (3,138 km) Awoke at 4:30 with calf cramp. Massaged it then rolled off pad with roller to go into hallway to roll legs. Relief. Probably didn’t drink enough water yesterday for the mileage due to the cool temperature and overcast skies. Lesson learned. Easy breakfast and lunch prep since we were inside. On bikes at 7:30 as a small group to combat mean dogs we experienced yesterday 2 miles from the sanctuary. Dogs were inside. Karen and I take off at a fast pace on nice backroads. I like riding fast in the early morning when the air is cool and the legs are (usually) fresh. At mile 17 we catch up to scouts Rick & Steve and ride in a line taking turns at point to battle the moderate headwind. We are averaging 18 mph – I certainly can’t keep this up! At mile 27 we make a turn and Karen and I need to peel so the guys take off. Phew! This road now is …
