About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Rain Date Makeup – June 4th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 4, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJune 4, 2010

Last evening’s ride was interrupted, actually it did not start, by rain. So this evening was a make up ride. When I left home the streets were dry but as I moved over my route it appeared the rain was in front of me by an hour or so. I normally don’t ride on Friday’s but since I didn’t ride last evening I wanted to get some miles in to prepare for tomorrow’s longer ride. Only one other rider was out that I saw as I rode west on the McKay Causeway over Lake Houston. This seems to be the place I see other riders lately. Weather was kind to me for the ride: 83 degrees, mostly cloudy skies, light breeze at 9 mph from the NNE.

Looking forward to a longer ride tomorrow. Today’s ride statistics:

  • Miles = 27.24
  • riding time = 1:45:58
  • average pace = 3:53 min/mile
  • average speed = 15.4 mph
  • max speed = 20.9 mph
  • average cadence = 81.3 rpm
  • max cadence = 177 rpm ?
  • climb 156 ft., descend 170 ft., max elevation 103 ft.
  • June miles 54.31
  • YTD miles 2095.06

Texas Bicycling Daily News – June 3rd

Texbiker.net Posted on June 3, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJune 3, 2010

This is an unusual item for the Hotter’n Hell Hundred in August. This is not an event in itself but an enhancement for the event. Rather than show a snippet this is the full description from Bikereg.com.

HH 100 Pace Group
Online Registration
Regular Registration Fee
$150 By July 28th.
Pace Group
The HH 100 Pace Group is the first of it’s kind – a pace group dedicated to breaking 5 hours for the 100 mile Endurance Ride. We will ride a controlled pace that gives you the best chance of breaking the coveted 5-hour mark. To help you in your quest, you will have a premier starting spot at the front of the grid, support motor cycles, and a team of experienced coaches and racers leading the way.

Pace Group participants will receive a special edition jersey and professional level support throughout the ride. Training Plans, Merchandise, and Training Events are also available to Pace Group participants. Please see www.athletesontrack.com for more details as they become available.

Please note that this is not a “no drop” ride. We will coach, we will cajole and coerce, but ultimately it will be your responsibility to keep up. Before signing up for the group, you should have completed at least 1 100 mile ride, and have a reasonable expectation of meeting the 5 hour goal.

Biking already can make one not smell so nice now there could be bicycle helmets that add to your aroma (actually this only happens if your helmet is damaged).

Fraunhofer developing bike helmets (and other products) that stink when damaged
from Engadget by Joseph L. Flatley
We’re glad you’re using a bike helmet (and we’re glad you’ve opted for that really scary one we first saw in 2007). You do realize, however, that the more blows to the head you receive, the less effective the headgear is, right? Researchers at Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute have developed a manufacturing process that injects microcapsules containing malodorous oils into the helmet…
