About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Opinion: New Bike Paths Are Great for the Heights, but Not for Arguing Neighbors

Jeff Balke | www.houstonpress.com

"This is Houston, not Amsterdam." Those were the words of a commenter in a thread on Next Door about the concrete abutments on 11th Street near Yale that were causing a bit of a stir among residents who choose to argue online. Admittedly, a cursory check of that particular intersection is rather perplexing, but it was simply a platform to stir up debate about the very principle of bike lanes in the Heights, which are exploding unabated.

It was one thing, it seems, to convert old rail lines to hike and bike trails. It’s quite another to introduce lanes just for cyclists along 11th Street and Shepherd and Durham.

Fewer seem to care about …

Put A Checkmark In March’s Goal; Fought Wind, Might’ve Won

Texbiker.net Posted on March 30, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 30, 2023

I didn’t ride yesterday so I thought a longer ride (more than 40 miles) was in order for today’s bike ride. Thinking of possible routes I looked up the Kingwood – Stroker Road – Kingwood route in SportTracks. This route is very similar if not the same as the Stroker Road – Huffman route. Checking the maps for each looks the same but there are variations in the distance from 42 miles to 46 miles. On March 25th I rode the Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Walden route which goes to Ramsey Road then back to Kingwood while the Kingwood – Stroker Road – Kingwood route turns right onto Ramsey Road heading south and then turns right onto Stroker road to get back to FM 2100 and then north to FM 1960. The “U” shape from Old Atascocita Road at Ramsey Road and back to Old Atascocita Road at FM 2100 is the difference. After all of that I rode the Kingwood – Stroker Road – Kingwood route today covering 44.21 miles in 3:12:54. The ride history from SportTracks shows 5 previous rides varying from 42 miles to 44 miles. Strava matched 2 other rides with today’s ride. At the 8 mile point I reached my 650 road mile goal for March. I’m at 686.5 miles for March now.

3-30-2023 SportTracks Ride History Kingwood-Stroker Road-Kingwood
3-30-2023 SportTracks Ride History Kingwood-Stroker Road-Kingwood

Normally on Thursdays I rode the Cervelo Caledonia bike but since I didn’t ride yesterday I rode the Lyneksey Helix bike. This is the only time I rode the Lynskey on this route. Time to break out of the rut. I started the ride at 11:23 AM after waiting for the temperature to go up a few degrees. I remind myself that the “real” standard time is an hour earlier and the day needs another hour to reach the temperature. Checking the weather I knew it was going to be a windy bike ride but it’s March and windy days are the norm.

The wind was a problem from the start until I made the turn onto Stroker Road. I thought the wind was stronger by then and it was confirmed when I finished the ride at 2:42 PM and checked the weather. Wind was from the SE at 16 mph, up from 13 mph at the start, with 27 mph gusts. No wonder my legs complained until Stroker Road. Once I was riding west on Stroker Road the wind became my friend most of the way back to Kingwood. Even riding west over Lake Houston with nothing to get in its way the wind helped me keep my speed at 17 to 19 mph. My overall average speed increased from 13.2 mph before Stroker Road to 13.9 mph when I got on FM 2100. Weather conditions: start 69 degrees, 84% humidity, dew point 64, overcast, wind SE 13 mph; finish 72 degrees, 85% humidity, dew point 67, overcast, wind SE 16 mph gusts 27 mph. I wore a long sleeve jersey and wind jacket above my shorts keeping me comfortable.

Riding north on FM 2100 from Stroker Road the construction has mostly cleared away and I didn’t need to weave from work zone to open shoulder like I did back on the 10/22/2022 ride. The south bound lanes from Old Atascocita Road to Stroker Road are open and the wide shoulder going north meant no need to ride behind barriers. The shoulder could be cleaned though with dirt and debris in some places.

Looking at my AXS.SRAM.com ride report the 35×13 gears were used the most at 2:08:23 out a total moving time of 3:15:34 (different from Strava’s time). This was for 31.4 miles. I stopped at a farm entrance to take some photos and when I got back on the bike I used the 35×15 gears because of the strong wind. I don’t think I shifted to the 35×13 gears until I turned to the west.

Wednesday March 29, 2023, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 1,234 miles (1,986 km) Cool, cloudy morning with a light headwind. Quick early stop at The Gage Hotel, the largest spa resort in West Texas. Impressive. On highway 90 all day today – very much a long and unwinding road. Undulating. There are no towns or services for 56 miles until we reach Sanderson. Not much to see. Vultures are enjoying a dead javelina in road. The mountains are forming into buttes. Blue and yellow flowers all along roadside. Lunch stop on concrete by communications tower. Afterwards the sun pops out and the wind picks up. It’s mostly a slight negative grade, but the wind makes it more challenging. Karen and I take …

ByJeff Ehling | abc13.com

SPRING, Texas (KTRK) — A man riding his bicycle and his young daughter, attached to him in a carriage, were hit by a car Monday morning in Spring, and it was all caught on camera.

The crash happened at about 7:40 a.m. in the 7800 block of Oak Moss Drive at Theiss Mail Route, near Klein High School.

People who live near the intersection say they see accidents at the four-way stop all the time, and they were not surprised a bicyclist and his daughter in a carriage were involved in the most recent accident. …

‘All Kids Bike’ at Mangum Elementary in Houston teaching kids how to ride bike

By Chelsea Edwards | www.fox26houston.com

The number of children who know how to ride a bike has steadily declined over the years. This is believed to have helped contribute to increases in childhood obesity.

Mangum Elementary has connected with the national organization All Kids Bike to help turn that around.

They are the fourth school in our area to offer this curriculum where kindergarten students will learn to ride bikes.

The Andy K. Wells Hike and Bike Trail is the first ever of its kind within the City of Killeen. It is 2.5 miles long and starts at:

Fort Worth Mountain Biking

by Gabby Cullen | citylifestyle.com

Local business owner spends his free time on the trails.

When you think of Dallas-Fort Worth and the Blackland Prairie lands on which the metroplex sits, you might not think of mountain biking. After all, this isn’t Hill Country, and the mountains are hundreds of miles away. But did you know there’s a thriving community of local people dedicated to mountain biking and the opportunities it provides? After all, when you take a mountain bike out for an afternoon, you can discover the open spaces and parks tucked away between the freeways and cities of DFW. You’ll spend time with other riders while gaining a deeper appreciation of the local terrain and beauty of the prairie lands, and it’s one heck of a workout.

Randall Archie, the fourth-generation owner of Archie’s Gardenland nursery in Forth Worth, has been riding mountain bike trails for over ten years, and it all began when his good friend and neighbor convinced him to try it out. When they finally got out on a trail, Archie found himself hooked. Day 24: Marfa to Marathon, TX: Gone With the Wind

Tuesday March 28, 2023, 30 miles (48 km) – Total so far: 1,178 miles (1,896 km) Cool wake-up at 38°, but more concerning was the strong winds and gusts that began at 2am. The wind had shifted and was now blowing from the southeast at 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. We are headed southeast. Meeting after breakfast to see if anyone wants to opt out of today’s ride. Only one taker. On bikes at 8:45 and we are gone with the wind. Cutting through the headwind was tough enough, but it took all my upper body strength to keep me and my bike from being blown off the road and into a ditch with each forceful gust. At mile 10, the van came by to check on riders, and five of us waved the white flag. We loaded bikes on …
